People Just Don't Understand,
By Magien_5 (Nevada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Candle Burning Magic: A Spellbook of Rituals for Good and Evil (Paperback)
You can tell them over and over, but they just don't get it! There is a HUGE difference between Wicca--a MODERN religion, and actual, honest witchcraft. Riva is a witchcraft author--NOT a Wiccan, and absolutely none of her books imply that she is Wiccan in any way, shape or form. Basically, if you don't see the words "I am Wiccan", you're not going to be happy with any book if YOU are Wiccan; so get over it already, and stop wasting your money on non-Wiccan books. There are plenty of books out there for your religion! That said, this book *could* be more complete, as with all of her books. I would personally have preferred that she just compile all of her little booklets into one volume, it would make for a much better read! I enjoy all of Ms. Riva's books; she tells it like it is, instead of putting that sappy, happy-face-on-everything twist that today's Wiccan authors do. Facts are facts, and Ms. Riva delivers them and pulls no punches.

Many of the Anna Riva books seem incomplete, but this is one of her best. People approaching this book should realize that they are not buying a "wiccan" or european candle magic book. What you are getting is hoodoo. This is the reason you need the occult oil formulas, and the incense powders, these products are made to use with spiritual worker's books like this one. This book has nothing to do with fluffy new age practice. If you want a solid candle working book, get this one. Many prayers to saints are included along with affirmations and altar setups.

This book has nothing to do with Wicca,

This book has nothing to do with Wicca and in no way claims to. The author writes for another path. I think the first book you should read is the one everyone tells you not to. You don't have to agree with anyone, but can work wisely with a broad base of knowledge. The idea of good and evil belongs only to patriarchal, god centered religion. Only the heart knows what is right for the individual, and the law of return is found in every path.

Witchcraft at its best! Hoodoo to take care of the rest!,

This review is from: Candle Burning Magic: A Spellbook of Rituals for Good and Evil (Paperback)
Definitely what the title says .... This book, like many by Anna Riva, combine European Witchcraft with Hoodoo to create an exciting blend of magical greatness!
This is personally one of my favorite books by Anna Riva.... I really like the technique presented in this book .... Basically, you will need to have a seperate altar for these workings or a candle board -- the layout is pretty the same, but the items change a good bit for each different spell you decide to do. The words you use are more along the lines of affirmations, however, it is your energy combined with the oils, herbs and candles that do the work. I also really like her section on the saints a lot! If you are a follower of the Saints, and practice magic, you will want this book. Much Love & Many Blessings, Thorn Nightwind

Good Candle Magic Book but not the best,
By
This review is from: Candle Burning Magic: A Spellbook of Rituals for Good and Evil (Paperback)
This book is one of Anna's best, but it is written to sell her products, not to teach candle magic. It is far more about Hoodoo than modern witchraft. However, if you are learning candle magic, and have Ray Buckland's book, this is a good second or third book to have.

A waste of time and money,
By A Customer
This review is from: Candle Burning Magic: A Spellbook of Rituals for Good and Evil (Paperback)
Well, I bought this book with high hopes, and all of them were not met, sadly. Candle Burning Magic begins with color correspondences, personal candles based on one's sun sign, and the symbolism of different types of figure candles. If I was forced to name one good point about the book, it'd probably be the section on figure candles, although it is pitiful. It covers such candles as Devil, Human, Mummy, Witch, Cat, Cross, Skull, and Snake, and what each can be used for. Altar setup is covered, and then the "Spells" begin. All the spells in this book have are a picture of an altar setup with the proper candles, oil, incense to use, and then a short affirmation. All the oils and incense are Anna Riva's "own", which must be purchased at somewhere like AzureGreen. The spells can surely be personalized, but I wouldn't waste my time. The rest of this book covers prayers to the saints, psalms and candles, seals and candles, the hand of glory, and ceromancy. The section on seals offers uses for seals from the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses; unfortunately, the info is so incomplete you would have to go and buy those books just to get the seals themselves. The Hand of Glory is some bizarre medieval spell that she has adapted to make out of clay and use to control another. All in all, not recommended.

Excellent if you are advanced with oils and powders already. Some books just come with a magical vibe regardless of the total content. This book is a dense book of outlines for the practitioner to work with. The affirmations are excellent that accompany the rituals. For a beginner this may not fill in enough gaps or give explanations of spiritual synthesis of how it works, but for others it is a gem.

This is by far one of the best books on candle magic ever, this little book is packed with everything a practitioner of fire needs to know to begin using the ancient art of fire magic, I own a few books on candle magic and this book simplifies the mystery of working with fire, in fact this is the one of the first book I often recommend to folks. this book is a must for any serious student of candle magic, Mrs Riva has blessed us all with a true gem.

Not my cup of tea. . .,

Ms. Riva's books, in my opinion, are too "gypsy-ish". Others may find her style to be very workable, but I found myself very uninterested. The best book for learning and using candle magick is "The Candle Magick Workbook. . ." by Kala and Ketz Pajeon.
