A Candle in Her Heart is one of my favorite Emilie Loring books, and she has 50 published under her name! Leslie Blake lives in a small New England Town called Claytonville. Her Father, a distant relative, has inherited the estate when Douglas Clayton dies heroically during the Korean war. Enter the "mysterious" stranger, Donald Shaw, as a new chemist at the Clayton Textile Company. Add some intrigue, reconciliation and romance and you have Emilie Loring at the finest! A Must Read for any Emilie Loring Fan!

I have read, and thoroughly enjoyed, all of Emilie Loring's books. Obviously some more than others. This one and the one with Penelope Garth are among my favorites. I find myself re-reading these books, especially when I feel blue or lonely or despair of our world in such terrible shape. I'm in the middle of them again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Deborah Chester on November 24, 2010
Format: Hardcover
I just finished reading this story and found it thoroughly enjoyable. I haven't read any of Loring's books since I was a teenager, but how pleasant to enter a story world where the primary characters are civilized, refined, courageous, even noble. That doesn't mean they're sappy or shallow cardboard cutouts. The best and worst of human nature is depicted here, and there's plenty of trouble brewing in the mystery plotline. Yet the love story shines with grace and tenderness between a heroine and a hero who are thoroughly likable people. Instead of the current trend in romance novels for the couple to be either hurling abuse at each other or lusting over every body part, Loring puts the "romantic" back in romance.

As an added bonus: Loring's prose can be downright lyrical at times.

I love books written about the 30's and 40's. It was well written and very
descriptive. The mystery played out well.
