A mild version of the Bloody Benders,

I bought this book since I am interested by the real life story of the Bloody Benders. A true old west gothic horror story, the Benders were a group of con men & women who murdered travelers who strayed into their inn. No fiction that I've read as of yet comes anywhere near to the horror of the true account. Candle of the Wicked is a somewhat dated but not bad telling of the events that led up to the discovery of the Benders deeds.
This book reminded me of an episode of the old Rifleman series. Not very graphic or violent, and without much of an air of threat, I still find it easy to sit through a western. Kate Bender was the most interesting of the Benders, and the author has made the rest of the family more humane and interesting then the historical accounts have portrayed. There's also lots of post-civil war politics and a few less then politically correct references to black people.
