This review is from: A Candle in the Window (Paperback)
Emily is only eight years old, but full of faith and love. She is so sure that her mother, who passed away that year will come and visit sometime during Christmas night that she puts a candle in the window to guide her on her way. Emily lives with her father and two older sisters, who have had to shoulder extra responsibility since the passing of their beloved mother. They family is loving and not in want, but they feel the loss greatly especially at this first Christmas without her. In the story they keep the family traditions alive--going to cut down a tree, decorating it, making special cookies, and going to a Church celebration and dance. Of course it is not the same for them without their mother. But earlier that year, their mother made sure that one of the most cherished Christmas traditions would still be there--a beautiful new dress handmade by their mother, along with new patent leather slippers from the Sears catalog. The three girls are thrilled and surprised when Father gathers them around on Christmas eve to present them with these wonderful gifts! Later, Emily's shoe is lost on the way to the Church party, and Emily is very disappointed. Her father searches long in the snow, but in vain. Before going to bed, though, Emily puts a candle in the window and says a prayer that when her mom comes, she will find the missing slipper. On Christmas morning, a miracle happens when she goes out to fetch wood for the stove. It could have been anyone, but who is to say that it isn't the miracle Emily has been praying for?
This is a lovely if somewhat sentimental story to read, or to read aloud to children. I would say that they should be at least six to appreciate the language level. There are no pictures other than the one on the front. It would also make a nice little stocking stuffer, which is what I'm going to use it for. Enjoy! |
