The poems of Sybil Estess' BLUE, CANDLED IN JANUARY SUN are subtle evocations of all the kinds of love and friendship that can be experienced. The allusive, emotionally vibrant scenes she evokes make the reader look at her or his own experiences with new eyes. Many Texas scenes come alive in this collection, as well as vignettes of other places. Everything Estess views is touched with transcendence and with a desire for social justice. These are compassionate and lucent poems.

Most poetry these days is like watching the WB on Fox. Yes, most poems are small frames and talking heads, no vistas and nothing ever happening. This was my first time to read this poet, Sybil Estess, and she really got to me. Things happen, as in real life!

Blue, Candled in January Sun is intriguingly various, both in subject matter and in poetic form. The poet explores the complexities of the human heart, both its sunlight and its shadows, and does so in spare, riveting language. These finely crafted poems are the work of an experienced poet at the height of her powers. Highly recommended.
