Book Description

June 30, 2004
Karen Moir ran away from home in Edinburgh when she was just sixteen; all her father, Detective Inspector Henry Moir, knows is that she was headed for London. Following a trail of warring drug dealers, child prostitution and born-again Christian gangsters, the search for Karen Moir becomes an increasingly dangerous trawl through London's underworld. And it soon becomes clear that there are others who want Karen found--the only difference being that they don t care whether she's dead or alive.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Stephen Larkin is an investigative journalist whose pursuit of a moderately corrupt politician in 1980s England caused the politician to take revenge by murdering Larkin's wife and baby. After a long period of recovery, Larkin has begun to reestablish his writing career when an old police officer friend asks him to look for his missing daughter. Larkin reluctantly agrees to help and almost immediately finds himself thrown into London's unspeakably violent world of drugs and rough sex. In fact, Larkin absorbs more punishment in the few weeks this book spans than most fictional PI's encounter in a career. The only touch of grace and honesty Larkin turns up is a runaway shelter called Candleland, run by a reformed mobster. At Candleland, Larkin not only discovers the missing girl and a complicated blackmail and murder scheme but also finds the politician who murdered his family. This novel is disturbing in its use of violence, but the psychological insights are carefully wrought and thoroughly convincing. George Needham --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

'If Philip Marlow had been born later, British and Geordie, these are the mean streets he would be cleaning up." --The Guardian --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
