Heavy D and who? Soul For Real!,

This is without question my favorite R&B album of all time. The debut album for the brothers Dalyrimple, alias Soul For Real, classicaly treads the line between smooth soul and catchy pop, in the tradition of the Jackson 5 and New Edition. The title track samples A Tribe Called Quest's classic "Check The Rhime"(the remix, found on the single, samples Heavy D's "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet"). Speaking of Heavy D, the production on the album is just right; not too boisterous and not so simple that it's boring. Though the youngest brother, Jason, is clearly the lead singer, he doesn't hog all the spotlight, check out Kevin on "Every Little Thing I Do, and Andre on "Spend The Night". They even do two cover tracks; Bill Withers 'Ain't No Sunshine" and Patti Labelle's "If You Only Knew". This was the perfect R&B album to compliment the resurgent East Coast hip hop scene of the mid-90's. Go get it!

Solid Debut from a Sadly Overlooked Group.,

More talented than B2K and more interesting than their bratty counterparts Immature (now IMX), Long Island's Soul for Real seemed poised to be the new Jackson Five. Like the boys from Gary, Indiana, Soul for Real (aka, the Dalyrimple brothers) sang hook-loaded r&b ditties with both innocence and charm. Their debut had two first-rate singles "Candy Rain" and "Every Little Thing I Do," along with midtempo jams "All in My Mind" and "If You Want It." On the ballad front, these young men held their own just as admirably, as shown in the 8-minute jam "I Don't Know." Unfortunately, their 15 minutes expired upon the release of their next album, the underrated "For Life." That's a shame because these guys had more to offer besides looks, guest rappers, and flashy wardrobes. If these upstart kiddie acts have any sense, they'll listen to this debut to see how teen r&b is done.

Slept on group,

I remeber back in the spring of 1995, Candy Rain was a huge hit for Soul IV Real. Going to the middle school dances and hearing this song would be the highlight of the night. The follow up song Every Little Thing I Do which sampled The Gap Band was another huge smash, but for some reason their parent label MCA seemed to focus more on Immature.Soul For Real had good production due to Heavy D and Kenny "G-Love" Greene manning the group behind the scenes.

10 years old and still sounding good,

This album is 10 years old and to me, it STILL sounds good. I remember when I first heard "Candy Rain" on the radio. I was deeply drawn to it. For one thing, I liked the beat a lot, knowing was Tribe Called Quest's "Check The Rhime" beat. The lyrics were real sweet and I loved it. Then "Every Little Thing I Do" was released as their next single. I remembered how nice the video was, with the people on skates, skating around them as they sang. One of my favorite songs off of this album in addition to the two above is "I Don't Know." This song is soooooo pretty. This album will always be a classic to me.

Every Little Thing They Do,

Is mad hot and very well done. It was easy to see from the very first note that Soul For Real had the goods and delivered them. With finesse, class and style no bumping and grinding or suggestive lyrics were needed. Just a heartfelt longing and sincerity that they brought into each and every song. Obviously "Candy Rain" was where it all started for these 4 brothers and they let everyone know that Soul For Real had arrived and could get down with the best of them. It's amazing to have someone that young with the vocals that Jason delivers in this song. The next hot joint being "Every Little Thing I Do" which had a very dancable beat to it and featured a SFR member taking the lead vocal reins this time and doing it with a cool and confident swagger with another well done video. The guys showed folks that werent some one hit wonders out for a quick buck.
With other very noteworthy tracks like "All In My Mind" with a heavy beat that resonates throughout the track and superb vocals once again by the guys. "If You Want It" was another hit off the album as well featuring their sisters-Nicole & Desiree on background vocals and Heavy D providing the hot lyrics this album just kept right on rolling. "I Wanna Be Your Friend", Jason delivers heartfelt vocals letting that certain someone know what they mean to him and the guys providing stellar backing vocals as well, its another not to be slept on track. Most interesting track would be their cover of Bill Withers song "Ain't No Sunshine" but you wouldnt know this because its handled with class and integrity. "Spend the Night" is sung and done well by Andre its a slow burner and adds another element to the cd overall. "I Don't Know" follows the previous song and again. Its one that you can't skip at all. It's the longest song on the cd but you dont feel that at all. Its just enjoyable to listen to and i do just that. "If Only You Knew" is a cover of the Patti Labelle and i know it bears repeating but Soul For Real handle this song with care and breathe something new into and the vocals well you just have to hear them especially Jason towards the end of the song. You'll know what i mean when you hear it. With "Thinking of You" closing out the song its simple and all but well done brings to a close a stellar CD that still gets mad play by me and a worthy purchase for anyone that didnt get "Candy Rain" for whatever reason. *5 Star Material right here*

When I was in 1st grade in 1995 I definetly remember the song "Candy Rain". Along with Dionne Ferris, Des'ree, Ini Kamoze, & TLC they made black R&B that year rock! I remember watching them perform on "All That" in the fall of 1995.
