The great Big Maybelle, January 17, 2005
This review is from: Candy: On Savoy 1956-59 (Audio CD)
Big Maybelle was a big girl and had a great voice, she inspired Janis Joplin, just to name one, and these recordings are from her second label Savoy, she first recorded for Legacy (I suggest you get her Complete Okeh sessions 1952-55 cd too).
In the Savoy years she was accompanied by the orchestra, but this doesn't make her less blues, cause, boy, we're talkin' bout some real blues here. Some real blues.
So if you're a blues fan this is just an essential.
Go on and listen to her and enjoy some blues power.

This is as good as it gets., January 22, 2010
This pair of discs is unquestionably the best music I ever bought. Big Maybelle does everything from slow, sweet love songs to scream, snort and kick out the windows jump blues and does it all to perfection. She had a magnificent voice, capable of great power and control, along with the seemingly effortless flow that makes the greats appear natural. Unlike most collections, there is not a track here that isn't good. If you like blues or appreciate a first rate talent of any sort, Big Maybelle is a necessity.
