Candy FLOP,
By Mai_Ling (anywhere, ny) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
This was a horrible book!!! It was like reading an after school special script. You never fully understand why she ever started using drugs. This author wants you to believe either 2 premises. 1. You have an educated sucessful vice principal who can run a school with little to no help from the principal but a friend ask her to try drugs and not any ole drug but hard drugs and she couldn't resist anymore so she just to try it. or premise #2 You have a woman who is so smart she is stupid and she has such high standards for herself but she wasn't strong enough not to do drugs? Huh.
Is it just me or are there chapters missing? Did anyone else not understand what she was trying to escape from? What was her reasoning behind using drugs? Staying on drugs? You never get a true sence of her stress level because this books never goes into that and I really didn't understand what was so horrible about her husband? She didn't seem to suffer from low self esteem because even while tricky she still wouldn't just take 4.00, she thought she was better then that. She also thought she has high morals and standards. So why did she need to use drugs? Let me tell you what I think. I think this author tried to use something called irony but I don't think she get's it. As the reader we are suppose to say humn Faith is always downgrading Teresa but there in the same boat. How ironic. Instead I'm just like when is this trick going to die? I also feel the author wanted to write a book with no happy ending which is fine but by the end of the book you know there is no happy ending it might have been better if you thought there was going to be a happy ending and it looks like there is going to be and then BAM no happy ending. One thing I really did not like about this book is all the conversations seemed forced. Lastly, was it just me or was you also wondering when she would stop being so gulliable? I mean most fiends (yah, I know some fiends.AND?) start out gulliable but eventually if they stay in the game end up being scandolous. This chick still just seemed simple and you can't be simple and live on the streets it impossible.

Don't mess with that Candy!,
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
This book was a really big let-down. I had high expectations for this book but it didn't deliver like I thought it would. It was straight at best. Faith was irritating me though because she kept acting all high and mighty towards Teresa, when she was a fiend just like her. Then when she was trickin' for drugs she talking about she had morals and standards. I'm like WHAT? Overall this was okay. I can't wait to read Life After Wifey though because I liked the "Wifey" books.

It just wasn't good,
By cherly marie "printer maven" (washington, dc) - See all my reviews

I love Kiki. I really do. She's amazing. I love her, but I want to give an honest review. The book wasn't written poorly at all, but the plot wasn't good at all to me. It started off very very slow. The way Faith fell into drugs seemed very awkward. Like she didn't even really try to avoid it even though she was disgusted by it. It just seemed like she was smarter than that, but just did anything just because she was told to do so. What I did like about the book was the message saying basically anyone can fall victim and lose it all. Powerful message. Some things was just really weird to me.

Not Good At All!!!,
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
I WAS VERY UNIMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK. I WAS USED TO THE AUTHORS WRITING STYLE FROM HER PREVIOUS BOOK(WIFEY & I'M STILL WIFEY) AND I WAS JUST NOT PLEASED WITH THIS BOOK AT ALL. I HAD TO LITERALLY MAKE MYSELF FINISH READING IT AND THAT WAS ONLY BECAUSE I HAD PAID MY MONEY FOR IT. I HOPE THAT THE AUTHOR'S NEXT SEQUEL(LIFE AFTER WIFEY) WILL BE WORTH A BETTER WAIT THAN THIS ONE WAS.

Sorry Kiki...,
By K.C. Joseph "Let Freedom Ring" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
This was the first of your books that I've read and I think it's gonna be the last. This book was awful. Technically, the grammar and typos made it almost impossible to get through. (Yes, Kiki I blame you and NOT Melodrama... but Winslow should be ashamed too!) The book would be a perfect primer to give to kids who you were trying to keep away from drugs. As an adult novel it was a joke. The characters were flimsy and unbelievable. A party where the teachers and vice-principal get sauced on school property??? Huh? or... I'm a successful school vice-principal, but sure I'll snort an 8-ball with my stupid, dope fiend best friend who's also my administrative assistant in my office and then go walk it off around the school track. This book just kept getting worse. If you buy it, do so in the winter when you'll need something to get a fire started in your fireplace! Don't waste your dough!

Welcome 2 da Candy Shop~,
By Shoe Princess (Midwest) - See all my reviews

Kiki Swinson did a good job, however I did expect so much more from her. After reading Wifey I & II of course I had high expectations. I did finish the story in three hours only because I was very curious about how it would end. The beginning was very exciting but the rest of the story just didn't do it for me.
As a reader we saw Faith fall deeper and deeper into the Candy Shop. I would have loved to see her grow and overcome her addiction-at least try. I did love the part of the story between Teresa and her lover. I really loved where that actually went. I look forward to reading Wifey III~

Showing the other side of the dope game,
By Knowledge Seeker (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
Very good book. Realism at its finest. Makes one accept the fact that not all are going to make it. I appreciated Ms. Swinson showing the other side of the drug world. The side where the lives of people and the innocent members of their families are ruined. The utter waste caused by the drug epidemic. Street life is not all glitter and glamour. It is filthy, grimy, and a disgraceful stronghold on too many American lives. Young people need to know this side before they leap.

Your Sweetness Is My Weakness,
By Louise (Chicago - I'm back home FINALLY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
Faith Simmons loved her job as an assistant principal of a prestigious art school. She adored caring for her young daughter and was complacent with her life as a wife. Faith started her Valentine's Day as she would any other year but this year would not end the same. Will her one decision cost her everything around her?
How does an assistant principal, wife, mother and best friend end up on the streets of a known drug infested area? What makes this time of pleading and begging of trying some candy differ from any other time? I don't know where this book went wrong. Ooops, I remember, "come on girl, try some of this stuff. Do it for me." After that, I continued to shake my head at the madness and the (excuse my choice of word here) utter stupidity of the main character. How she functioned for so long in the book is beyond me. After the first few episodes with her, I was willing to buy her some candy, whether it was penny or a quarter, just so she could O.D. and this spectacle of an unbelievable story to be over. 2 1/2 stars

This book was garbage!!!! I bought it based on other books but I wish I would have saved my money. I forced myself to read a few chapters then skimmed through to see more garbage and finally let my 2 year old niece color in it. If this were my first Kiki Swinson book it would be my last!

Round and Round,
By Angie "Chini's Girl" (Camden, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Candy Shop (Paperback)
Round and round is all that came to my mind when reading this story, so why not allow that to be my review title. I am not sure how I felt about this story because the main character was all over the place with her thoughts. Now I was trying to keep in mind that she is on drugs so there is no way possible she could be in her right state of mind, so stay focused on that. I think the concept that anyone can fall victim to drug abuse was there, the story wasn't fully developed. Like there was things left unsaid and she just didn't have any common sense before the drugs. ---------------- |
