Editorial Reviews

The cornerstones of this record became the soft vocal sound of "Psychocandy"-era Jesus And Mary Chain coupled with the sonic sweetshop of daisy age hip-hop. Rhys was also listening to old 60's and 70's Welsh language pop, folksploitation, and prog rock 7-inches, which influenced a lot of slo-mo solo acoustic numbers and built up a bedrock of varied sounds. This is an album of eleven songs for the acoustic guitar and voice. A mesmerizing musical journey.

gruff rhys ditches the theatrics and sticks to solid song writing and groovy production on his second solo outing.

after the throw-away intro, the title track provides a pretty clear picture of how the album is going to be. in a word, playful. the fairy-tale-like lyrics and childrens-song-like melodies lead into the equally as entertaing "the court of king arthur".

from here we go into the more serious, and very similar sounding, "lonesome words" and "cycle of violence". perhaps the two strongest tracks on the album, these tracks are very unique and compliment each other well.

the following two tracks are pretty standard gruff rhys, as are the next two, which are sung in welsh like his first solo album.

"now that the feeling is gone" i sthe most SFA sounding track, and is pretty solid as well.

after another welsh song, we reach the albums climax, the stunning 14:00 "skylon!". this story-song is captivating, and much like "the trapeze swinger" by iron & wine, it keeps you interested throughout with easy-going melodies and clever lyrics. the spoken word wrap-up to the story at the end is the icing on the cake to this wonderful record.

highly recomended for Super Furry Animals fans.

If you raised your hand that you probably have already listened to this album and you have no question about it, but just in case you do you need to know the sound of this album is more scaled back and spare, though still atmospheric. Gruff largely crafts a purely acoustic-sounding album that's been electronically manipulated a bit. His voice is still an extremely comforting baritone and he sounds really at ease here. I wouldn't call this album psychedelic, but others may disagree. It's definitely not as much as the animals albums are. If you've heard the album, spread the word because not enough people know of the animals and Gruff. I love this music and hope they make music and release it till they die.

When this album was initially released back in 2006, I was not that overly impressed, but with Neon Neons new album on its way (2013), I always like to re-acquaint myself with the artists back-catalogue.
So listening back to "Canylion", it's turned into a great little record, full of tuneful surreal Indie/Folk/Rock songs.
You get the classic "Cycle of Violence" & the 14:36 minute epic "Skylon!" (Every album should finish with a 14-minute song).
So an outstanding record, & considerable stronger than the last couple of SFA's albums.

I strongly suggest this cd for any fans of Super Furry Animals. Fuzzy, Psychedelic ear candy.
