Book Description

December 15, 2009
Do you remember how you felt when you were learning to drive? You were nervous. You were scared. Your heart was racing and your mouth was dry. You were so frightened by failure that you wanted to call it quits. . .except that you were more thrilled by the chance to experience something that could lead to freedom.Justin Cane, a Mississippi farmer's young boy in the summer of 1959, feels the same way as he learns about driving and about life. Justin's mentor is his father's trusted black farmhand, Able. Able comes across as an incredibly strong man, both physical and spiritually. As Justin and Able take a road trip together through the low lands of the Mississippi Delta, the boy learns not only to drive on the open road but, more importantly, about the wonder and cruelty of life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The setting is summer in the late 50's, southern Mississippi, along the low lands of the Delta and Justin Cane, the son of a farmer, is ready to learn how to drive. One of his father's black farmhands lends his expertise as the two take to the open road. The driving lesson soon turns into an adventure neither had bargained for and Justin learns more than just how to drive his father's truck. Through humor, mishap and racial prejudice, along with the guidance of a loving God and the driven faith of Able Johnson, young Justin Cane soon learns the meaning of integrity and righteousness through the eyes of a black man. Humorous, tense, action filled with distinct southern dialogue, Cane and Able is a perfect fit for the troubled era in which it is set and lends a wonderful insight into the life experience of a family destined to be taken on the journey of a lifetime. Stephen Cheek has a talent for storytelling. A great read overall. --Reviewed by Cindy Bauer Writer/Editor/Reviewer/Interviewer

The urge to embrace the road inevitably trumps nervousness and fear. Cane and Able follows young Justin Cane as he tries to gain his wheels in the late 1950s. His teacher is one of his father's farmhands, and through their travels, Justin Cane learns more than just how to maneuver a vehicle; he learns about life and the harsh side of reality. Cane and Able is a read that will leave readers thinking. Recommended for library distribution. --Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA

I'm still amazed at how well he formed not only the characters themselves, but the situations they were in, the conversations, the thoughts, everything. I'm excited to read another book in the future and I would love to see another book with these same characters- maybe a prequel or sequel Mr. Cheek? :) The book follows Justin and Able, the two main characters. Justin is Mr Canes young son and Able is a trusted farmhand. Their relationship is simple and complex at the same time and you feel like you're riding right along with them for the ride when you read their talks with each other. I felt so many emotions, strong emotions, bubbling up while reading, everything from wanting to just hug Able for being the kind of man he is to wanting to hurt Big Doug for the kind of man he is. It's not just the main characters that get the emotions and thoughts going either- it's all the characters- every single one. --Eva Ledger (Middletown, DE) Goodreads Reviewer --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

More About the Author

As a fiction writer I enjoy the freedom to move through a story and build my characters to my satisfaction. I am a storyteller by heart. I teach 4-5 year-olds in church and love it. I've done that for over 25 years and find that this experience has helped improve my skill as a writer. There are similar techniques that have to be used for any audience to keep a storyline alive. (so that is my secret)

I have many hobbies that I enjoy on the side but little of that comes out in my books. I enjoy creative things such as working with stained glass, landscaping (because I am a landscape architect) playing rock'in roll in a great band. I even dabble with a CNC for those who might know what that is. I built my own and I am very proud of it. That was probably the most challenging project I've ever attempted... but how can I leave out my old Harley? It's fun to ride and fun to just look at.

I am married to my same high school sweetheart and have 3 wonderful children, with new grandchildren arriving each year.

God has blessed me with great health and good common sense. "I will never run for political office." I love my friends that I think I have too much.

I have written two novels to date and one children's book. I have a series of children books planned. The first was Catfish Cowboy & Mr. Turtle. I hope to build on that story.

My first novel was CANE AND ABLE. This is a great novel with much humor springled throughout the pages of the book, but becomes very serious as it nears the end. It is a "down home" southern book.

My next novel, THE HUNT, is almost a true story in part (if that makes sense.) I was fortunate to come across court records that stirred my interest for the book. Later, I was able to interview the local sheriff that investigated many of the crimes. From there I had enough to build a tense thriller with actual locations weaved in and out of the story. This book has just been pre-released and will be found on Amazon and other bookstores soon. Pre-released copies are available from my website now. Visit: http://www.cheekbooks.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book Was So Much Fun, March 10, 2009

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It was a delightful trip by two interesting characters. I laughed out loud each time the creative names for the books of the Bible were mentioned. I was a child in Louisiana in the 50's, and I remember that things were not good in many ways. However, I appreciate how this book portrays the deep love and relationships of individuals, black and white. That is what I remember most about that time. I heighly recommend this read for its entertainment quality!
