1.0 out of 5 stars Written by the pet food industry, August 18, 2005
This review is from: Canine & Feline Nutrition: A Resource for Companion Animal Professionals (Hardcover)
This book was profoundly disappointing. I expected information on feeding my animals food "fit for human consumption" and from my kitchen (versus store bought). I realized shortly into the book that it was written by experts at Iams Company, a maker of pet food. Their recommendations are based on meeting the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines - a committee developed by the pet food industry when they decided they did not care for the requirements recommended by the Committee of Animal Nutrition of the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academy of Science.
I did get one good tip from the book on how to clean my kitchen after working with raw meat. Otherwise, there are much better books out there for people looking for healthier pets through the food system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!, March 19, 2010

I have approx 15-20 canine nutritional books as it is a hobby of mine to learn about this topic. This book by far is my most valued book on this topic in my library of books! It does not just tell you how to select a pet food ( That is not "nutrition" that is product selection) it contains information about what your dog or cat needs, why and how it works within the body. It is very expansive and I love this book. It may be too much for some. If you are just looking for some light reading or help with selecting a pet food I would choose another book as this book is more like a college text book and may be too much for the average pet owning reader.

Over all, the information in this text is great, but I expected more along the lines of recipes for diets for pets with specific diseases or for at least more nutritional guidelines for this. Otherwise, easy to read and follow.
