This volume apparently goes hand-in-hand with the equally bad Small Animal Clinical Nutrition (apparently given free-of-charge to vets by Hill's) as little more than AAFCO's pseudo-science to justify its stance to ignore the well-researched guidelines in by the National Research Council. When the NRC, in 1985, suggested that feeding trials were required to determine if pet foods were wholesome and sufficient, the pet-food industry rebelled and abandoned the idea of meeting any standards other than their own (AAFCO is an industry group, not a U.S. Government entity). c.f., Sheffy, Ben E., 1989, The 1985 Revision of the National Research Council Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and its Impact on the Pet Food Industry, in Nutrition of the Dog and Cat: Waltham Symposium Number 7.

Don't fall for the propaganda in either industry-sponsored text.

Yes, I do feed commercial foods, though I am careful about ingredients and suppliers.

Strombeck's Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets (the original, apparently out of print) is a much better resource, even at the expensive price being charged on the used market. (Edit -- note that the link seems now to go to the second edition by Schenck, which should be avoided.)

The latest NRC report (2006) is Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats (Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals).

Excellent nutrition book. Written in a language that is understandable to the common reader. Very well laid out and easy to skip back and forth for more in-depth discussion of interesting topics. Lots of charts are really appreciated. I've tagged several for easy future reference. The 2011 revision makes the material up to date. I highly recommend this book to people who believe nutrition is important for both people and their companion dog and/or cat.

I haven't digested it all yet, but every time I start into this book I find more information that I want, need, and will use to make a well designed diet for our active hunting dogs.
It's a MUST HAVE for dog lovers who understand the limitations of feeding a kibble and/or canned diet. Helps keep you from making mistakes in your dog's diet that could cost you his health and his longevity.
