A "must-have" for anyone charged with holistic therapeutic treatment of a stressed or sick dog,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual (Paperback)
Now in an updated second edition, Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual is for dog trainers, breeders, handlers, and ordinary pet owners alike. Author and licensed massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt, who treated athletes and world dignitaries before he applied his animal empathy talents toward canine massage, offers clear information illustrated with practical black-and-white "how-to" diagrams. Chapters cover dog kinesiology, principles and concepts of massage, common stress areas, stretching, hydrotherapy, common problems such as inflammation and scar tissue, and much more. Canine Massage is a serious, in-depth guide written by an expert, for professionals, although it is comprehensible to lay people. A "must-have" for anyone charged with holistic therapeutic treatment of a stressed or sick dog.

Canine Massage is Great,

I found Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual to be a valuable reference tool for dog massage. Together, I purchased Canine Massage: Complete Reference Manual and Canine Massage DVD (Integrated Touch Therapy). Having the ability to reference and read what is described on the DVD has enabled me to put together a great massage therapy program for my canine clients.

This review is from: Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual (Paperback)
This book is the most useful guide I have found for canine massage. I have a large dog who loves being stroked, and so I decided to take advantage of that and learn as much about canine massage in an effort to help him with relaxation as well as rehabilitiation. This book is replete with detailed diagrams that show the skeletal and muscular anatomy of dogs so that a layman (like me) can read this book and immediately apply the techniques effectively.
From personal experience, I have been able to use the massage techniques learned from this book to relax my dog during thunderstorms, and to help relieve muscle spasms that occur (which I believe are related to his arthritis, as he is a canine senior citizen). This book provides straightforward instructions along with detailed diagrams to speed the reader's learning curve, and I highly recommend it. Aside from everything else, I am able to now spend time giving my dog a gentle, loving massage, just as a gesture of love. It is so nice to know I am easing away his physical tension as I massage, and his 'sighs' of relief as I work my way along his body give me the approval responses I need to know I'm doing the right things, and I know I've hit a home run when he starts to snore!

Exactly what I needed for my dog's rehab from surgery,

Our Border Collie had a malignant tumor removed along with half of his triceps, We needed to massage his leg before and after walking & swim therapy. The book was helpful as it showed different types of massage and exactly where it was needed. The Canine Massage book was very thorough and covered a lot of detail without being too technical.

I am going to school to learn Pet Massage and this book has been a great help. We need more people to learn to massage their dogs and keep them health and happy.

A good basic book for methods and implementation. Geared more for beginners, but therefor a foundational study guide for any CMT.

re-do review,
This review is from: Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual (Paperback)
Upon further investigation, and education, I have since learned just how poorly executed Mr. Jean-Pierre Hourdebait's technique and knowledge of Canine and Equine Massage really is, I regret that it took me so long to gather this information, but I felt compelled to share my now educated understanding of animal massage Therapy.
Save your money on this one.

I donated this to a yard sale. Not impressed by it. Someone else got a good deal at $1 and that dollar went to a great cause.
