I have to admit I expected alot from this disc when a friend let me borrow it. I'm a big Adderley fan, and have tried to emulate Ray Brown in my own bass playing for years (without the success I had hoped for). But I never knew this CD existed, nor did I know that Wes ever played with these guys (all his early stuff knocks me out). I loved it from the first 30 seconds, even though Wes only comps on the first cut - I mean, why have him on a song if he's not going to solo, right?? However, I'd rather hear him comp than most people solo anyway...listen to the way he backs up Victor Feldman's piano solo. Of course, by the 2nd number, Wes is in full swing. Chock full of great tunes and inspired solos, you can't afford to pass on this CD. My personal favorite is Lolita (track 2), but that changes depending on which track I'm listening to at the moment. Feldman's vibe playing is spectacular, as well. You can't go wrong!

When Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley asked four other musicians to join him on these late-Spring 1960 sessions, Wes Montgomery had only recently come into his own, after over a decade of anonymous work with Lionel Hampton. He was making a name for himself as a guitarist with a new style of playing. In May of 1960, Montgomery's trio were across the Bay at an Oakland club, while Adderley's quintet played a return gig in San Francisco and Ray Brown was appearing in San Fran with the Oscar Peterson Trio. Brit Victor Feldman, known then for his vibes, also joined this RIVERSIDE project. Vic's piano demo of an original tune ("The Chant") led to Cannonball asking him to play keys on these sessions as well as vibraphone. Six months later he invited Feldman to take over piano duties in the Adderley Quintet. Louis Hayes, Cannonball's regular drummer, rounds out this specially assembled quintet.

Their first 6/5/60 San Fran recording session (at Fugazi Hall) for the RIVERSIDE album that would be released as CANNONBALL ADDERLEY AND THE POLL WINNERS (RLP 355/RS 9355) comprises this record's 'B' side. A second Los Angeles gathering on 6/5/60 produced the tracks heard on Side One. Although new acquaintances, they sound here like old friends running through very famllar material.

A "cool" set opener is a fine adaptation of one of Bird's originals. Vic's vibes start the often quiet "My Heart Alone," a Franz Lehar theme that gives the players plenty of improv room. Cannonball's alto carries "Never Will I Marry," a Frank Loesser show-tune. Feldman's "Chant" begins Side Two and his "Azule Serape" is the album's closer. In between is the group's highly inventive take on a Barry Harris number, "Lolita."

SIDE ONE
[4:49] Au Privave (take 2)
[6:02] Yours Is My Heart Alone
[8:30] Never Will I Marry

SIDE ONE
[6:34] The Chant
[8:03] Lolita
[6:26] Azule Serape

TOTAL TIME: 40:24

"Cannonball Adderley and the Poll Winners" is a welcome reissue by Capitol. This recording in my opinion ranks up there with the classics "Somethin' Else" and "Know What I Mean?" An all-star lineup of Wes Montgomery, Victor Feldman (alternating between piano and vibes), Ray Brown and Louis Hayes tackle six swinging tunes in winning fashion. The two best tracks are "Lolita," featuring terrific interplay between Wes' guitar and Feldman on vibes, and Feldman's "Azule Scrape" which'll get 'em dancin' in the aisles. The CD contains an alternate take of Bird's "Au Privave" that was not on the original LP. Fire off another winner for Cannonball!

Saxophonist Cannonball Adderley meets guitarist Wes Montgomery on this great jazz album that has been expanded to include five vocal tracks from another session. Very nice!
