This review is from: Canoeing Guide to Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is priceless to any paddling enthusiast in the western PA area. Get a copy NOW!

From The Author's web page.
The Canoeing Guide to Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia is a guidebook to the canoeable waters that run westward out of Pennsylvania via the Ohio River. It includes some streams from neighboring areas, as well. The guide is the result of volunteer effort over the past 30 years by many, many canoeists, working through the Pittsburgh Council of American Youth Hostels. It is currently in its eighth edition, covering about 3000 miles of rivers in 470 pages.

My Comments:
It covers any and every stream in the area if it is even remotely possible to paddle a canoe or kayak. Even the smallest streams were run in high water. A high level of detail is provided for each stream, and some lakes. Put-in and take-out points are described. Maps and pictures are provided. Various related topics are discussed in detail, including Canoes and the Law (Permits), trip organization, safety, how to read USGS stream gauges, and weather.

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to paddle in the area. If you do a lot of paddling, and like to go to new rivers, you will wear this book out. (I bought a new copy to replace a worn out copy) However... The eighth edition was published in 1991 and it has not been updated since. Many details have changed in 20 years. Don't take it's word as gospel.

Mary Shaw still maintains a web presence for this book, which amazon wont allow a link to, so you'll have to search for it. Use the book's title as the search.
Be sure to click the link that says "The whole table, alphabetically by river" This chart is a distillation of the knowledge gained in 30 years of hard work.
Even if you don't buy the book, before any trip be sure to check the appropriate USGS gauge against the chart's class and " HI OK / LOW OK " ratings.
