its scanning resolution is adequate but not spectacular at 600dpi. its speed however blew me away. at tiff (lossless) resolution (17mb per photo) of four 4x6 photos, it took less than 50 seconds to save to file & it comes with useful text recognition software - i suspect most people will use alternative image editing programs than the supplied arcsoft.

for the price, excellent value

5.0 out of 5 stars Scannertastic!, November 20, 2006
This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE70 (Office Product)
If manual feed is all one needs, the LiDE 70 is more than enough to create business quality photocopies, faxes, and digitized images. Images can be edited, subject to OCR, printed to actual size, if not more, with little loss in resolution.

Without bulky electronics needed for film scanning, the LiDE 70 is compact, light, and quick acting. Energy efficient, its powered by just an USB 2.0 port and can run off an unpowered USB hub. It is roughly as large as a stack of 100 sheets of legal paper. The included software is user friendly with options for advanced functions.

Most flatbed scanners scan over 300 dpi, the base resolution for many high-end print images today. The dpi specification is less important than an ergonomic device that is so easy to use that users concern themselves more with what the scans are for, rather than how to scan a document.

The LiDE 70 has an embedded counterfeit deterrence system and will give a TWAIN error if a user scans certain monies. Its is not clearly documented by Canon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice scanner, September 21, 2006
This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE70 (Office Product)
I researched this scanner in August at Canon's website, and all of the info on it sounded very appealing to me, and I bought one the first week they came out in September. I've had two Visioneer scanners and have used someone else's Visioneer's 7300 USB scanner on occasion and I had been looking into possibly buying one of those instead, and I was a little apprehensive about buying any other brand, but the CanoScan LiDE70 way beats them hands down in regard to clarity and quality of the scan, and I'm glad I bought one over the Visioneer 7300 USB, as this CanoScan LiDE70 is far superior, IMO.

About the only thing I can say anything critical about it at this time is that it's a little noisy while scanning, but I can easily live with that.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK scanner, but very loud., January 21, 2007

On the basis of other reviews here, I bought the LiDE70. It lasted less than a day. I love this scanner for its slim size, feature set, speed, and software. I just couldn't take the sound.

The gear to move the scanning head is... as loud as a coffee-grinder. It's as loud as my dustbuster (and the sound quality is roughly as annoying, because it's high-pitched). It's louder than my shredder. I think it's as loud as the loudest dot-matrix printer I ever had. It's loud enough, I concluded, to disturb the concentration of someone at the other end of my house, which is why I ultimately returned it. If I lived alone, I probably would've kept it, since I only need to scan sporadically.

Other than that, I loved this scanner. The hardware buttons and included software worked fine on my Mac (OSX 10.4.8 Intel). It was faster than I expected; regularly only 20 seconds of scanning followed by 8 seconds of the scanning head returning to its home position. The output looked fine, and the OCR program seems to work well.

The other reviewers seem to cover all of the essentials except for the noise. A review on another site recommended scanning at higher DPI to make it quieter, but that isn't always practical, and it's not as fast at higher settings.

I've replaced it with the CanoScan LiDE 600F, which is a bit more expensive but so much quieter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use scanner makes my project go smoothly, November 9, 2006
This review is from: Canon CanoScan LiDE70 (Office Product)
I purchased the CanoScan LiDE70 in order to scan our complete family photos from the 1920s to 2006. I am very pleased with its ease of use, light weight and dependable action. The software that came with it is also easy to use. The scanner scans 300 dpi or 600 dpi, and lots of other options. I recommend the product.

I spotted this model on the Canon website before it was released. I ordered it from Amazon as soon as it hit the shelves. This scanner is small, and USB powered helping me limit the ammount of wires around my desk. The resolution is phenomenal and the software is more than user friendly. I get great results using it through Adobe Photoshop CS2. The OmniPage software that comes with it is a great help scanning my college books and converting them into text I can use in emails or reports. Sure there are other, cheaper scanners with less than stellar abilities, but at that price you can buy a scanner that won't be outdated within the years to come.

Very easy to use and gives great results. The ability to scan up to 10 photos at once and get 10 separate images is extremely useful. A little noisy, and slow at 600dpi, but otherwise excellent.

I work at a museum and we do a lot of scanning of pictures. I find the LiDE70 to be easy to use and so much faster than two of the older Canon models that we have. And the Amazon price is right.

This scanner is incredibly easy to use. It scans nice quality pictures and it scans fast! I really love that it's just hooked up by a simple USB cable. Just remember to install the software BEFORE you plug in the scanner and you'll be fine.
