5.0 out of 5 stars best quality/price on budget lens, September 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens + UV Filter + Accessory Kit for Digital Rebel XS, XSi, XSi, T1i, T2i, EOS 50D, 60D & 7D Digital SLR Camera (Electronics)
For my budget I think this is the best telephoto lens with image stabilization. I took about 500 pictures so far and I'm really happy with the clarity of the pictures taken even at 250mm. I'm not sure if this is going to be a problem in future but when IS is used and the camera button is half pressed a motor noise is coming out from the lens.

Great lens at a great price. This really does the job for that second utility lens. I have used this outdoors mainly on Sports and landscapes and it has been solid. Image Stabilization is a plus and quality you would expect from Canon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lens for the money, November 20, 2009

my budget is small and I wanted a telephoto lens up at least 250mm that had IS and was reasonably priced. I read the reviews and decided on this one. It was a good decision.

I bought my canon rebel with the 25-55mm lens but I couldn't get the detail I needed of birds and such that were across the yard. For the price this lens handled the problem and I LOVE the lens cap holder that came with the accessories. I wasn't sure that it was the size lens I wanted but it does fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent quality and great price, April 21, 2010

The Canon IS 55-250 mm lens with the UV filter and cleaning kit is such a great price for $250. I priced the lens alone out to be around $300 in my area. It came very quick and was exactly as I expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lens for Canon SLRs! Especially for the price!, March 22, 2011

This review is from: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens + UV Filter + Accessory Kit for Digital Rebel XS, XSi, XSi, T1i, T2i, EOS 50D, 60D & 7D Digital SLR Camera (Electronics)
For the money, this lens packs a lot into a very reasonably priced package. My photos taken with this zoom lens are professional quality, and I have used it in many different settings: dimly lit cathedrals, athletic events, concerts, etc. I am VERY pleased with this lens, and when I go shooting with my friend, he is always begging to borrow it! The image stabilizer is a huge benefit from most other zoom lens...I wouldn't waste my money on a zoom without it, in fact, I bought this and another w/o it, took it on a side by side comparison shooting (even using a tri-pod), and this killed the lens w/o IS.

Very pleased with the lens. I am no pro but it was great for volleyball games and things you just can't get close to. I can't wait to use it more!

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE TO USE THIS LENS IN CROWDS, September 30, 2010
This review is from: Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens + UV Filter + Accessory Kit for Digital Rebel XS, XSi, XSi, T1i, T2i, EOS 50D, 60D & 7D Digital SLR Camera (Electronics)
I love this lens because it is plenty sharp enough for pictures of people, and at 250mm or somewhat less, it is especially appropriate for poster like candid shots and also great for portraits. Having the ability to shoot from a distance causes people to not see me right away. I get to take shots of them being their natural selves and shots of them after they see what I'm doing.

Of equal importance is that at high focal-lengths and near wide-open apertures, the depth of field is very narrow. I have a Canon Rebel XSi and it is hard to create background blur with a shorter focal-length lens. This is because the sensor is smaller than full size 35mm sensors, and there is a magnification (or crop) factor of 1.6 for any lens used. But with this lens, at the longer focal length,(think 250 X 1.6 = 400mm effective focal length)the subject stands out sharply from the background. This helps me get really good pictures of animals and people.

Also, the image stabilizer lets me take pictures at two shutter speeds slower than I could otherwise. I'm old and a little bit shaky, so I leave the stabilizer on, except when using 400th of a second shutter speeds or faster on telephoto. This is almost like having a lens that is two apertures larger (which would be very expensive). The undesirable differences are that subject movement can spoil the image at slow shutter speeds and, at the shorter focal-length setting, the depth of field may be insufficient to cause enough background blur to isolate the subject.

For the range of focus, this lens, like the EOS Rebel cameras, is quite lite weight and easy to handle. I do wish it had Ultrasonic focus. It would focus faster and make less noise. But the focus is almost always fast enough, and the noise is not very important for the way I make pictures.

This lens is often sold with a Canon EOS Rebel camera - as a kit lens. It not as sharp as a typical Canon fixed focal-length lens, and is certainly not as sharp as any Canon L-series lens. Maybe you can afford top of the line but I cannot. For me, this lens is a great lens and I use it a lot. Photography is more about light, composition, and timing, than it is about lens sharpness. But as far as sharpness is concerned, this lens meets Canon's standards and is very popular. It is a good choice for the serious amateur photographer on a budget.

Made all the difference in my camera. I've taken close-up pictures of bugs and flowers that are simply gorgeous. I used to have lens envy, now my friends envy me.
