5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Printer Yet
I just upgraded from an HP 970 Cxi and couldn't be happier. My i900D makes top quality prints on Canon Glossy Photo Pro and Ilford Classic Glossy papers - better than the digital film processors I used. And, its ink is much cheaper than the HP's. And, it has a built in card reader that can be used by the PC and to print picures. And, it includes an LCD for printer status...

3.0 out of 5 stars i900D Priter
Quality is excellent, some of the best photos I have seen from an inkjet printer. The enclosed software does the job but is not intuitive in use. There are 2 basic printing programs that could have been combined into one program.

The direct print from a memory card takes quite a bit to get used to. It is a difficult series of menus to go through that will...

And, it includes an LCD for printer status and picture preview (so so quality for picures). And it integrates very well with the great bundled software. And it includes a dedicated 4x6 feeder. And there was a...rebate when I bought it with my Canon S400.

The fact that it is slower than the i960 is actually a benefit. The i960's high speed causes some ink pooling on glossy papers like Ilford Classic Glossy - the i900D actually winds up with betters pics because its slower speed prevents pooling (based on what I have seen.)

Overall I've found excellent quality and all the features I could have wanted in a printer at a great price.

The Canon i900D is an outstanding photo printer. I purchased this printer some months ago after comparing printers for awhile.

This printer shares a shell with the i8xx and i9xx series of printers. The features vary, but this printer has the ability to do both direct printing from your digital camera and memory cards as well as from your computer. The setup and software are super easy to install and use and you'll be up and printing your first pictures in minutes.

And the prints! Photos printed on this printer are outstandingly crisp, with beautiful color. Quality photo paper produces prints that are indistinguishable from "real" photos. Printing is fast and the provided software lets you organize prints on any size paper easily and efficiently. Way to go Canon!

There are some downsides to this printer. The add-on drawer for photo-sized paper (like 5x7) is very cheesy and gets stuck easily. It doesn't work all that well for me either, although I rarely use it. And then there is ink...

This printer uses six tiny separate cartridges. No store locally stocks all six, so stock up on cartridges. The Canon cartridges are expensive (eleven bucks each...a bit cheaper on Amazon) and run out at different rates. The software will warn you when a tank is running low. On my printer this happens just before it runs out altogether. So keep the cartridges handy. (One nice touch with the ink tanks is that they are clear so you can actually see the ink level: no more wasted ink because the printer thinks the cartridge might be empty!!)

Otherwise, I'm very happy with this printer and recommend it highly.

I haven't even connected this to a PC yet, so I can't comment on the included software. I just take my compact flash card, insert it in the printer, and print away (other media supported as well - see specs). The images are top-quality, and it's easy to choose/crop the images you want to print from the LCD screen on the printer. The fact that I don't have to replace a multi-color cartridge when only one of the colors is gone will keep me from putting out so much $$$ too, which is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Printer Excellent Service, August 1, 2004
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
I purchased the i900D through Amazon. In terms of printing, it was flawless. Very pleased with the photos, speed, dB, software, the whole nine yards! However after about a week the LCD screen on the printer developed a solid black line down the middle of it. I contacted Canon Support and within 72 hours another i900D was delivered to my home. In addition they provided all the necessary pre-paid labels to return the defective one. All I needed to do was to call the carrier for home pickup. It could not have been easier.

So when considering any electronic purchase, think about the quality of service that supports the product. Today that is becoming more and more an issue. In this case, at least, Canon came through 100%

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Results, December 18, 2003
By
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
After much research and reading all the recommendations on this site for both this printer and the HP 7960 I chose the Canon mostly because of the seperate ink cartridges and fear of jams on the HP's. I am already an owner of a multifunction HP that has always given me problems and most frustrating of all the color printing has NEVER been good. The colors were never true and looked completely cartoonish. I have heard many good things about the HP photoprinters but really dont want to take any more chances. I bought the Canon yesterday morning and hooked it up to my pc and with the very first print was amazed at how great the quality is. It was super simple to hook up and use and produces such vibrant prints that I cant tell the difference between a photo that was chemically processed and the ones that are printer produced. It is true borderless printing and the Canon paper is like regular photo paper without the perforated edge one has to tear off. What a great product, and it does exactly what it claims to do: produce great photos of good quality quickly. Be aware that you will need to purchase a USB cable to hook up the printer to the pc in order to print from your pc, and it only comes with 5 pieces of 4 x 6 paper. You will definitely want to purchase more paper, because once you start to print out your beautiful pictures you wont be able to stop. I Highly recommend this printer because of the quality and ease of use. This is my first Canon product and will from now on be a loyal customer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Canon out colors HP, November 12, 2003

Can't decide between this machine and the HP 7960? I've tried them both and this is the winner.

The print quality is much warmer, HP felt a little sterile. The Canon machine feels more substantial, the HP felt cheap and skidded across the desk. On the downside, the LCD on the Canon isn't very clear and the set up takes a little longer. Overall, Canon is the winner, add a $... in your pocket and quicker printing, and the answers easy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Shutterfly.com, December 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
I am so impressed with this printer! The quality of the pictures rivals that of a regular camera and I can print them instantly! The software was easy to install and I was able to print in minutes. After printing a few pictures, I compared some of the prints to those I had printed by Shutterfly.com and found that the Canon colors were more true-to-life. Some of the Shutterfly pictures had a green tint but the same Canon prints were much better. There are two downfalls so far. 1)It has been difficult to find Canon photo paper in the stores (I went to Office Max, Staples (a very small selection), and Walmart). 2)The ink refills do not list the Cannon i900D on their boxes and the folks at the office stores could not tell me which refills to use. But, according to Canon (customer service answered very quickly), the printer is so new that i900D is not in the current literature. However, I have printed almost 100 pictures and the ink is still going strong. I think that at $222, this printer is a steal! I am extremely happy with it and am recommending it to everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Prints!!!!, November 6, 2003
By
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
After much research on the web I chose this printer based on previous history of canon printers. When I received this printer I printed a 4X6 in less then 10 minutes out of the box. To my delight I was extremely impressed by the print. I printed some more pictures and was so impressed I had to take them to work. At work my friends were very impressed also. Some of these friends are plastic surgeons who are involved in digital and 35MM photography so to impress them tells a lot about this printer. I should of been a rep for Canon because I conviced many people to buy this printer. I compared these prints to others,no comparision. The Canon prints where much better and where as good as 35MM prints. As for cost of the prints the paper was 15 cents and the ink I don't know yet. But you can buy generic ink as low as 1.50 for each ink tank. So I would est. the cost of a print to be less than 20 cents. I would recommend this Printer without hesitation. Jan, 4, 2004. I've bought Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy from Amazon at 7.49 for 50 count. So far the ink has not even move after many pictures and black and white copies. At work at least 5 people have bought this printer and everyone has been extremely happy over the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent printer (and it prints 5x7 borderless!), June 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
I purchased the Canon i900D yesterday and I could not be more pleased. Prior to purchasing the Canon, I was torn between the i900D and the HP Photosmart 7960. One of my deal-breaker requirements was that the printer MUST be capable of printing 5x7 photos borderless on 5x7 photo paper. From my internet research I was unable to determine if either the i900D or the 7960 could do so.

At Best Buy yesterday it so happened that an HP sales rep was there to answer questions about their printers. I had one question for the woman: Can I print a 5x7 borderless on 5x7 photo paper? After the HP rep wasted 45 minutes playing with the 7960 trying to determine if and how to do so, she finally concluded that you cannot. You have to print on a 8x10 sheet (centered nonetheless) and crop the whole thing. Plus, I was amazed on how little this HP rep knew about her own product.

I then went to the i900D. The Best Buy clerk had a photo printed borderless on 5x7 paper in less than a minute. Piece of cake. Bottom line, the Canon allows for quick and easy borderless printing on any standard photo size - no centering/cropping needed. Simply tell the printer or its printing software which size you want and it automatically does it. At home last night, I was interchanging between 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 prints with ease.

i900D photo print quality is excellent from my 5.1 megapix camera (have not tried older 3.1 pictures). The b&w and sepia prints were nothing short of amazing. I found it close to impossible to tell that they were not professional photos. The install was a breeze. I was printing directly from my Sony Memory Stick Duo (if you have a duo card, make sure you have an adapter) even while the driver/software install was going on. The Easy Print software that came with it is excellent for simply printing your photos. Both the software and on-printer "software" are so user-friendly that a monkey could figure out how to print photos in the size wanted.

This previous HP user has been converted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proof you don't have to spend a lot of $$ ..., June 9, 2004
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon i900D Photo Printer (Office Product)
This printer is by far the least amount of money I've ever spent on a printer ... and it's absolutely the best printer I've ever owned! Canon makes the best digital cameras and now, I'm convinced, they make the best printers too. I own an Epson Photo printer and an HP photo printer/scannner/copier. I spent over $300 for each of those and the prints are much better on this Canon than either of those 2 printers. I have a lot of experience on both the HP and Epson printers and I will point out why (...)this is far superior than anything anyone else puts out in this price range or even much higher.

** The ink system in this printer is fantastic! Anyone who has an Epson printer knows that the ink cartridges have a plastic coating over the hole where the ink comes out and when the printer "charges" the ink, it has to kinda drill a hole through it to get the ink to come out. Many times with those cartridges, it takes 2 or 3 times for it to get it right and print correctly. And Epsons drink ink a whole lot faster than this printer does. The HP ink system is just a joke when photo printing with the tri-colored cartridges. (...) With the Canon ink system, you just break off the bottom plug and insert it into the print head. That's it! No ink charging, no print alignment (except for the first time you use the printer and put all the ink cartridges in), nothing. Just close the cover and start printing. They also last much longer than the Epson inks.

** The printer driver is very user friendly. I have my Epson 960 well over a year and still find it very diffucult to get a good print because of all the confusing menus and options in the driver. With the Canon, there's a "print advisor" that kinda walks you through the process of printing a photo without confusing menus. It also has many extra options for printing such as an Image Optimizer and Vivid Color, to name a few. Much better driver in the Canon than in the HP or Epson.

** Print quality ... amazing! I wrote a review about my Epson 960 when I got it about how great the pictures were (when I got it to print right) and I never thought it could get better. Well I printed out a few images from the same CF card and the Canon images came out even better. More contrast, richer colors, and much less "noise" even on lesser quality images. I even printed out 5 of these images on one of those new Kodak kiosks they have at a lot of retail chains now. Not really a fair comparison considering the paper and dye based ink they use but I have to honestly say, the Canon images were absolutely identical to the ones I printed on the kiosk.

Some other nice things about this printer are:

* The built in card reader is a lot faster than the card reader on my computer or my HP all in one.
* It's whisper quiet printing and to even further that, there is an option in the printer driver for "quiet mode" printing which I haven't tried yet, but would almost have to be silent to get any quieter.
* The print speed is slower than the comparable i960 because it has about half the nozzles (about 1500 compared to the roughly 3000 on the i960), but that can be a good thing. Cheaper photo paper absorbs ink slower than better photo paper so if you're using cheaper paper on a faster printer, you run the risk of blotching if the ink isn't absorbed faster than the paper is going through the printer feeder. This just leaves more options open with this printer than a faster one.

All in all I have to say that overall, this is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. (...). And when (...) Bottom line ... buying this printer is a no-brainer. (...) Even though the ink that is used in that printer is supposed to preserve the photos colors much longer, if you do as I do and save all my images on to CD's, even if the picture does fade after 20 years you can just print another one.

You just can't go wrong with this printer!
