I hope bigger is better.,
By Bob (Houston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon BJC-6000 Color Bubble Jet Printer (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
For the record I've only had the machine for a few days, so obviously I haven't worked out every issue. However, I can comment on initial set up and quality. I have encountered NO problems with set up or software drivers. Be careful with the ink cartridges, they are squirrely and if you mess one up, its mess city (no I didn't). So far I have noticed that the printer, while making some noise, is far quieter than two other brands I had previously. Print quality is ok, but not great. I am assuming that this will improve as I figure out what settings and paper to use. The main thing is this baby seems large, as in real big, and takes up more space than the monitor practically. In summary I had no set up hassles, no broken or missing parts, and the software loaded and worked flawlessly on a Dell Pentium 2 450. There was no cord, annoying, but about right it would seem. I bought the cable that I wanted, be warned you won't get one in the box. Also, you gotta love the ability to replace the little ink tanks individually as necessary. I assume you could refill also. I have read a few other reports of major defects right out of the box. Thankfully I haven't seen that yet, but there's always a few lemons on the loose. ..Cheers!

Love my Canon,

This review is from: Canon BJC-6000 Color Bubble Jet Printer (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
We just purchased our second Canon printer. The first was a BJ-610 which has serviced us for over 5 years. It is now going to our son. We purchased another Canon because of the good luck we had with the BJ-610. We are purchasing a new digital camera and the new 6000 has the special resolutions to handle digital photos. It has the additional color cartridge for photos. My biggest reason for purchasing the 6000 is the individual color cartridges. My grandkids come over and love to print colored pictures. This will allow me to put in only the colors that have run out. Our primary use for the printer is home use and now with the new digital camera, photos. We have yet to put it through it's paces and with the information from a previous review (Rich, San Antonio, Tx), I'm sure that we'll be able to set the resolutions to accomodate the pictures perfectally.

Great output - but not very fast,

I found the default settings do not do this printer justice. It took patience and lots of wasted paper, ink and time to get the results I wanted. BUT, once I did, I can only say that some of my print was stunning. Especially when using high resolution paper. One drawback is speed (or the lack thereof). Printing text is OK, but to get high quality photo or graphics be prepared to wait. It took 9 minutes to print one page of a newsletter which had 3 graphics and 1 photo... but, WOW did it look good (as well it should!)

Printer settings that work best for me,

In response to Andrew's query about my settings, allow me tooffer the following:Unless you're just printing e-mail ordrafts... ALWAYS tell the printer that you are using high resolution paper. However, you need to use good paper to start with. Don't waste your money on cheap consumables. I use Great White Premium (24lb 96 brightness), Great White Presentation (28lb 98 brightness) and the new Kodak 100+ brightness. The Canon high res paper (HR-101) will knock your socks off but you can only print on one side. Set print quality to no less than the 'marker' before FINE and don't use 'AUTO' for the output style. Use Accurate or Vivid.

I just purchased the new BJC 6000 printer after my Canon BJC 210 died. I've had other brands and Canon is my pick. It's speed and quality are far supperior to anything else under $200 and over. I like the fact that is saves me money on ink replacement. I'm glad it didn't come with a cable, it would just raise the price and I got to pick out wich one I wanted. I would recomend this printer to everyone, low and high end users.

thus far a good printer,

I wanted to submit 3 stars, but that seemed unfair, given the 6000's quality. A pain to assemble, it has lots and lots of neatly organized gadgets that eventually render a nice printer. Astonishingly, it comes boxed without a cable. In this day of customer-friendly packaging, you'd expect to open it up and find everything you need, ready to go, including a cheap cable. Prints great, high quality and clarity. Many moving and clicking parts necessary to print basic text make me wonder how long it will live. One other gripe: The bundled software is mostly marketing gimmicks that give away free information about you on-line when you aren't looking; better to purchase stand-alone software. I've had it 2 weeks and will submit another review after it has been put through its paces. Overall seems far better than a similarly priced color inkjet printer in my office at work.

Great Printer!,

I purchased the Canon BJC-6000 right after it was released in spring of '99 (when it still cost $400 CAD). I used to have a 4200 and I found that the cartridges were getting a little too expensive to replace. I heard about the 6000 on a Computer Show in Canada and the impressive results they got from it, so I gave it a try. Personally, I was blown away! It's a bit loud, but the black printing is fast and crisp, and the colour quality is amazing! (Though on cheap paper, it totally drenches it). I have had very little trouble with it, and the minor problems were easily fixed without being sent off for repair. I give this printer 4 stars. I would recommend this printer to any home or small business user.

Defective Printer,

After installing the printer software, the printer quickly failed. The printer failed after I printed the second page. I couldn't get the autofeeder to work afterwards. In addition, I was unable to get free technical support after hours. Cannon charges a $25 fee for calling after hours. I returned the printer and purchased another brand. I am quite happy with this choice.

Paper Eater,

I purchased the BJC-6000 because I loved my BJC-620 my wife took over after she got her own computer. I like the idea of seperate ink cartridges that can be replaced individualy. However, my BJC-6000 has been in the shop 3 times because of constant paper jamming. The machine would not accecpt the paper correctly every time, and when it did take, it came out crooked. The 2nd time it went in, they corrected the problem which lasted about 3 weeks. Then, one day, it snatched in a page and managed to crumple it up and damage the print head in the process. Ink all over the interior resulted in replacement of the platten. Insult to injury was added on when I was charged for a new print head even though the machine was still under warranty. I may have purchased a lemon. I am dissapointed in the BJC-6000, especially after I had good results with the BJC-620.

reflections on my BJC6000,
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon BJC-6000 Color Bubble Jet Printer (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
BJC6000 purchased in fall of '99 after much searching on-line for a good ink jet printer. It prints color graphics well, and photos OK, not as well as I had hoped. It was a bit challenging to set up, with all of the color cartridges snapping into place, and the lack of an accompanying cord was odd. It makes a racket with lots of clicks and snaps and whirs (print heads aligning?) when it powers up and before and after it prints, which is unnerving (like, is it working correctly) and sometimes aggravating. In my opinion, if you want a decent printer that prints at the better end of ink jet quality, but not the very best, then the 6000 is a good deal. Lower-priced models print OK, too, though.
