This review is from: Canon CanoScan D1250U2 Flatbed Scanner (Office Product)
I purchased the Canon D1250U2 and the HP 3570C. The HP modelcost a little more but the difference in quality is amazing. The HP model is much better than the Canon and even scans faster. The Canon picture did not have very good details. With a picture I do not recommend this scanner and I am returning it to Amazon.

So far so good, great buy for thirty-seven dollars (with the ten dollar Holiday Gift Certificate). It's a PC Magazine editors choice, so that's good enough for me. If you want some reviews before spending your cash, search for the D1250U2F unit on this site. They are the same scanner, except the F model comes with a transparency unit and USB 2.0 card.

I used to work for Canon USA as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer and tested many Canon scanner and printer drivers in the past. As far as this scanner goes - I wouldn't buy another one again! The problem is in the scanner's driver, it has to recalibrate every time it scans a page. It takes 8 sec., so 8sec. times 10 pages, that's 80sec. waiting time where my other older Canon scanner does the scan right away! No wating time to warm up the lamp before each scan. What a shame !!

This scanner is more than enough for the money it costs. It works fine with XP and has a good picture quality scanning documents or photos.

I purchased three of these ....My scanners worked perfectly, no problems at all, with Windows XP Home, XP Professional, and Windows 2000. Plug-and-play. Also, canon does offer drivers for this scanner online on their website, someone just needs to do a little hunting to find them. Color reproduction is great, resolution is good, I found that I didn't need to do any color correction or editing with this scanner. It's not very fast if you don't have usb 2.0 but still decent. (with a newer usb 2.0 card or motherboard, it will scan full color pages in seconds, literally).

A few minor issues...,

In general, I found this to be an excellent scanner for the price. But I did have a few issues with it. First of all, the underside of the glass was filthy. It was fogged/marked in 4 places that I could see. Because there is no way to open the scanner (that I can see) to clean the glass myself, I will have to exchange this scanner for another. Second, the scanner does seem to need to "Adjust the Lamp" every time you do a scan, as a previous reviewer noted. I'm not sure why this is necessary. Finally, there is no on-off switch that I could see. The scanner does seem to be "on" all the time, which seems to be a common "feature" of many electronics today that I could do without. On the plus side, the scanning software does a nice job handling multi-picture scans. The time this will save me in scanning in family photos is worth the minor problems above. And I found the scan quality to be quite acceptable compared to previous scanners I've owned. I had no problems setting up the scanner under WinXP Pro.

I needed a reasonably priced, easy-to-use scanner to copy photos and documents into a genealogy program. After several weekends at the electronics and computer stores, and even more hours online, I purchased this scanner (on a Sunday night, and received it Tuesday! WOW!). It was easy to hookup (it just took seconds) and the software, though it looks very complicated, is very easy to use. My scanner is working great with Windows XP (it comes with specific instructions about installing with the XP operating system) and is fast enough for my needs. I am very pleased with it, and would recommend it to anyone who needs a scanner for personal use.

It Worked Great,

Initially I began to use the D1250U2 scanner with windows XP on an older slot A athlon system. Everything worked great, the scanner and software enabled me to scan dozens of family pictures for a scrapbook. I was very pleased with the ease and the quality of the scanned photo. Then I upgraded to a new t-bred athlon xp, new nvidia 2 motherboard and I have not been able to use my scanner since. XP will not recognize my scanner. I cannot load the twain drivers. XP tells me my USB device (the scanner) is defective and needs to be replaced. I have exhausted the world wide web for an answer. Before the change I was so pleased, now I'm not so.

The scanner arrived while I was at home and my non-tech savvy girlfriend setup it within a few minutes. The software that comes with the D1250U2 is pretty much all you need to start scanning images ASAP. I must have scanned 75+ items in the first night with no problems, the 5-10 second initialization delay for each scan didnt seem to keep me from being productive. Every image looks clear and identically colorful to it's original. I am very pleased for the price I paid for the D1250U2.

A GOOD SCANNER AT A GREAT PRICE!,

I bought this scanner due to its low price and the many reviews that gave it it high marks for its scanned images. Canon also offers the D1250U2F model which allows you to scan film and slides. Since I mainly wanted a scanner to scan documents (not photos) and since I have a computer with a USB 2.0 port, I chose the D1250U2 model instead. I've had it a couple weeks and am very happy with the quality of the scans. The buttons on the front of the scanner can be set to start your custom applications when pressed and I can scan documents at 600DPI in a few seconds. I haven't had any problems using the scanner with Windows XP. I did contact Canon since there was no mention of the D1250U2 drivers on their site. I was told to download the latest drivers and software for the D1250U2F (which I did) since both scanners are basically the same model. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.
