This item is not what you think it is! It's from way back in 1995, which is a technological ice age ago. It requires a 40 pin SCSI cable to run (which is tricky for the average non-IT person to install). It requires special software to run it, and it doesn't scan to PDF. Yes, that's right, no PDFs. I am in the process of returning one I just bought and I cannot tell you how disappointed we were in it. The one we bought had other issues, though, like falling apart and not working due to mechanical issues. This one may be in perfect working order, but just know what you are getting into. Buyer beware.

While not for everyone this is a great scanner. Its brother the 5080C does 24bit color and scanns both sides of a document in one pass. With the adaptec SCSI board which can still be purchased anywhere, this scanner interfaces to windows xp easily. I use it almost everyday to scan legal documents to pdf and find I can scan 40 pages per minute easily and if the documents are two sided the speed is 80 pages per minute. It does seem to be adjustment critical for paper thickness but if the set-up is correct (really easy to do with the service manual as a guide) the unit reliably scans various thicknesses and various sizes all in the same stack. Too bad adobe doesn't automatically adjust the paper size. Also there are a number of SCSI-2 to USB conversion cables still available. Mine is still SCSI so I haven't had the need but if they work this scanner can have extended life. It can handle 500 sheets of 20lb paper, scan fast and reliable into Adobe Acrobat and can be purchased for about 1/8 the cost of a new similar scanner. Replacing the feed and separation rollers make this thing pretty much new.
