I just wanted to put a review for people considering the leap.

Almost exactly three years since Canon changed the digital SLR market forever (with the $1,000 EOS 300D) they announced the third generation of their affordable entry level series, the EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi). This new camera follows the design of the EOS 350D, being very compact and relatively lightweight but not compromising on manual controls or in-use performance. The headline changes are another two megapixel step up (to ten megapixels), the nine-point AF sensor from the EOS 30D, a new dust removal system which includes anti-static surface coatings, low-pass filter vibration and software based dust pattern removal. Less important but just as noticeable are the removal of the status LCD, replaced instead by a camera settings screen on the now larger 2.5" LCD monitor and the eye proximity sensor just below the viewfinder to turn this off when composing your shot

The headlines features for the EOS 400D are its ten megapixel sensor, nine-point AF sensor (from the EOS 30D) and new 'EOS Integrated Cleaning System'. I'm sure there are many Olympus E-series owners having a chuckle at this moment, through the many years of 'there is no dust problem' emanating from Canon owners to see Canon now admit (but also address) the potential problem.

Dust occurs in the mirror / shutter chamber from many sources, but mostly; fragments released from the moving components inside the camera, dust introduced from the body cap, lens changes and from some of the more 'affordable' lenses which have a more push-pull movement which can draw air in. In the past the only way to clean this dust out of your camera was to use some kind of blower (which sometimes worked), clean it using a swab (dangerous) or take it back to Canon (with a cost). So here's what Canon has done to address this:

Used materials in the mirror box and shutter chamber which are less likely to generate dust

Improved the body cap, again to not generate dust

Used anti-static coating on the sensor surface

Created a new separated anti-alias filter which vibrates to shake off dust

Added a Dust Delete Data feature which can map stubborn dust to be removed in software

I'm not a professional photographer by any means, but I do enjoy photography as a hobby. I've been waiting a long time to get a nice camera and after many, many hours of researching I chose the Rebel XTi. This does everything I wanted and more! The preset picture style options make it a breeze to use until you can figure out the rest of the options. It has great detail. The first picture I took was of my cat from across the room and I caught him mid lick. When I cropped the photo to fit just his head, the photo still looked like I was right in front of him. It was very crisp and clear. Family and friends have also commented on some of my pictures saying how they can't believe I took them because they look like studio quality prints. Also, when I called Cannon's service line for a technical question there was no waiting and the customer service representative knew exactly how to help me. I would also recommend buying this kit with the camera. It comes with the cannon lense which is fairly good quality, plus the extras like the tripod and camera bag come in handy. You'll save money in the long run with all of the extras that come with it. I love, love, love this camera and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to take high quality pictures with ease.

I am definitely not a professional photographer, but part of my job description is taking photos. At work I use a Canon rebel XT which is also a great camera, so when it came time for me to invest in my own I wanted something I was already familiar with. This camera works great and it is very easy to learn and handle. I love how light it is! Any amateur photographer should definitely consider this camera when looking for something that is also dependable, and easy to use.

For the professional photography it's a great buy, It's easy to use, and the learning process it's simple, 5/5 if you're a traditional photographer and you want to get into the digital photography it's the best possible choice you can ever made

This camera is simply awesome. It will be quite a while before I master all its features. The software that comes with it, for Mac, is quite well done and easy to use. The Pro accessory kit is well worth the price.

This is an excellent option to enter the semi-pro photography world; it is a great value, you get all you need to start taking digital pictures, although the optic (canon EF 18-55 mm f 3.5) is not that great for indoors, the carrying case is bad quality, the camera is light weight and it has a pretty fast response.
