Good for Canon enthusiasts and professionals,
By
This review is from: Canon EOS Digital Photography Photo Workshop (Paperback)
This is a pretty good comprehensive book about Canon cameras, lenses, speed flashes and accessories. If you're a frequent buyer of Canon equipment or if you looking to build a Canon system, this book will answer many questions you might have, including some information about Canon's digital processing software that comes with their cameras. Some parts of the book may be too technical for beginners, and I would not recommend this book for those looking for detail information about taking quality photos. This book is more for learning the technical side of photography, helping you understand camera settings, functions, and differences between the various camera and lens models that Canon offers. The book does not cover the recent Canon models--the Canon 50D and the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The writing in this book is very accessible, and includes assignments/exercises that reflect information presented each chapter. The included video tutorials (not presented by the author, but by another photographer) on a CD-ROM, included with the book, seemed okay, but I think the tutorials are little too fast paced, glossing over techniques rather than going into depth on various topics. The ending chapters of the book provide a nice list of online resources, a glossary of digital photography terms, and an index for quick referencing. The companion website for the book is also useful.

I have to admit, I am a camera junkie. It presents the information in a very clear style that is just wonderful to read. I think the book is really aimed at the beginner but for those who have been enjoying Canon's DSLR's for a while will still love the book. It is very refreshing.

Very good guide for film photographers getting into Canon EOS Digital cameras,

I'm glad I read and listened to the amazon.com reviews. I could follow the manual okay, so I didn't need a book which was fleshing out the manual information. I also didn't need a "newbie" guide to photography since I had been a fairly experienced SLR film photographer and photo print maker many years ago (although I can always learn something new!) What I needed was something to tell me all the new things I need to know about digital SLR's and Canon in particular.
For instance: Why is any given EF lens to be considered the equivalent of a longer focal length lens in 35mm, but only for some Canon cameras, including the used 20D I just received for Christmas? This was something I never had to consider because 35mm is always the same frame size, but the digital sensors can be made smaller than that. With the Canon *0D bodies (and also the Rebels) you end up with a cropped picture, although the depth of field will remain that of the original focal length. This means, for the uninitiated, you can't get as wide a view with one of these bodies and a 24mm EF as you can with a 24mm lens on an SLR 35mm film camera. I now know I will have to either buy a 15mm lens or upgrade to a "full frame" camera body to get a true wide angle shot. These and many other things are clearly explained in this book. Not only that, but for a person in a visually oriented profession, he has really managed to write in excellent, easy to understand style. The book is well organized and he sticks to the subject. I can skip around in the book and easily find the answers to my most burning questions. Highly recommended for people like me!

A fantastic book for the beginner, it's like taking an actual digital photography course., the DVD that came with it makes it even more practical. It's a pretty thorough book so be prepared for some intense instruction, but it's all very understandable, but A LOT of stuff! The book took a bit of time to show up, but it came within the window agreed upon. It also came in excellent condition.

I would describe this book as one that could be used as a tutorial and/or reference. The information within is detailed enough to go back to time and again as a reference. However, the presentation makes reading it a joy from cover to cover. While it presents some very technical aspects of photography, it is not overly complex and should appeal to most any semi-serious photographer. This book is not at either end of the photography spectrum and should appeal to very large audiences.
I wouldn't expect non-Canon photographers to appreciate the book as much given the author's obvious preference for Canon equipment and the considerable amount of information that would not apply to other brands. In short, I liked the book so much that I purchased another as a gift. Well worth it!
