We had purchased a quantaray lens of the same focal length and zoom rating as this one. It worked ok on a tripod but was almost impossible to hold still with maximum zoom. This lens has stabilization built in and works great at maximum zoom.

I am a beginner photo-hobbiest and recently purchased my first DSLR (t3i) that came with a 18-55mm lens. I wanted a good telephoto lens for taking those long distance shots of animals and landscapes without spending more for a lens then I did the camera. For $150 i dont think you could beat this lens. The zoom is just about perfect for my use. I can get nice clear 2/3 fame shots of a bird from 100 meters away without feeling (and looking) like I am carrying a telescope around my neck. To a complete beginners eye (being me) the pictures are beautifully clear and the AF is quite fast and the Image Stabilization (IS) really helps shooting handheld at max or near max zooms. I slapped a polarizer and lens hood on and hit the beach and ended up with some pictures that looked like they could have been in a magazine or post card (at least to my untrained eye).

So, if you are an amateur, beginner, or hobbiest (or all of the above like me) and want a great, inexpensive telephoto lens for shooting nature, landscapes (and im sure just about anything) without spending a ton, you cant go wrong with this lens. Pros will probably already know they will want something from the L series, but this might make a good "clunker" for taking in the back country or some place where you wouldnt want to bring a MULTI 1000 dollar lens.

The description said it was shipped on a white box and that's exactly how it came. Lens works amazing. I would recommend this lens for pictures that you need to zoom in.

I bought this used and it arrived well packed and even had its own Lowepro case. Nice addition I didnt even know I was getting!!
The lens is the cheaper Canon lens but for me just starting out it fits the bill just fine.

For what it costs, its definitely worth a 100 bucks more in terms of functionality. Agreed that its made entirely of plastic, but even then, it has very good stability + clarity. Even at high ISO, images produced were fantastic. This is definitely a good buy.

I bought this a few weeks ago, didn't buy new, I got it as "used-like new" and am very happy with the pictures and video I have taken so far with it. I have a Rebel T3 that I bought just before they discontinued the T3 last fall. My camera came with the typical 18mm-55mm lens and I bought this for a low priced zoom lens. It attaches to the base camera easily for switching with my other original lens which would be used more for close up portraits or close up flowers etc. This zoom lens works well for my needs. If you have any issues with far away action shots or taking video with it at full zoom, turn off the AF and focus manually. Can't beat the price especially if you get a good used one. There are at least three different versions of the 55mm-250mm lens that I ran across while hunting, this one is the lightest weight as far as I can tell. The other two have "image stabilization" printed near the AF on/off end and this one (or at least the one I bought and I believe is pictured here) has it printed near the opposite end on the black band. I think the middle weight is the newest, but I'm not positive. The lighter the better to keep it stable, but it means more plastic as well. Anyway, I got mine for a little over $100 used, and it was well worth it for my needs, I'm no pro and do not want to invest a fortune in this photo hobby. If I did, I wouldn't be buying a beginner T3 camera, which is as complicated as I want to go by the way. I just want pictures better than a point & shoot.

It is what it is. A great value for the money, but not without limitations. This lens is good for nature, scenic, and wildlife photography, not a good walk around lens generally speaking because on my cropped sensor Canon T3i the 55mm is the equivalent to a 80mm and it sometimes hard to get back far enough to capture your subject at closer range. This makes it extremely frustrating for trying to photograph buildings or general vacation snapshots. It is, however, image stabilized and performs and focuses well.
