EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM

Designed for high-quality still image and video capture while being compact and lightweight, the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens features the optics, AF and image stabilization necessary for shooting in any number of situations. For brilliant image quality it has one high-precision aspheric lens to reduce chromatic aberration throughout the zoom range. It features optimized lens coatings to ensure exceptional color balance while minimizing ghosting and flare and a 7-blade circular aperture to ensure beautiful, soft backgrounds. For outstanding performance, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens perfectly complements the Movie Servo AF feature found on select EOS Cameras with a compact six-group zoom system and a new stepping motor and focus mechanism to deliver smooth and quiet continuous AF during movie shooting. Still photography benefits from a high-speed CPU and an optimized AF algorithm. Full-time manual focus is available in AF mode and the front element does not rotate during focus, perfect for use with polarizing filters. Handheld photography is enhanced by the lens' Optical Image Stabilizer system, offering the equivalent of four stops of compensation. Compact and highly versatile, it is the ideal lens to carry anywhere.

This lens is grossly underestimated for quality landscape photos. The old models do not have Internal Focus (IF).. Circular polarizers/ Graduated ND filters can now be easily used with this version. A low cost alternative to take nice landscape photos due to the small (58mm) filters required.. 58mm vs 77/82 filters will knock off 50% or more in price. I notice a nice improvement in focus locking in w/o hunting compared to the older version. I ofton find myself using this lens due to being lightweight, compact & less expensive to replace. Don't let canon marketing mislead you..this is a lens which is very usable and performs much closer to more expensive models than given credit for

The EF-S 18-55 4.5-5.6 IS STM came into my possession as part of a Rebel SL1 kit. Here's what I thought about this lens after several weeks of shooting:

BUILD: This is an EF-S design and, thus, only fits APS-C (1.6X crop) cameras, e.g., Rebel or 70D. It will not mount on full frame models, e.g., 6D. It's wholly made of plastic, save for optical elements and electronics, and feels, well, inexpensive. However, plastics are of good quality and nicely finished in semi-matte black. I could detect no play in the mount or zoom extension. This lens is a featherlight 205g and easy to slip in a coat pocket or purse.

FOCUS is internal--no front element extension or turning--and fast, but silent to onboard mics. And it can focus surprisingly close: tight photos of flowers and small products are a snap. The STM drive rendered pulls and Movie Servo silky smooth on my SL1. I found STM focus equally effective for both video and stills and surprisingly surefooted in low light.

The electronic or "by wire" manual focus is smooth but extremely underdamped. It's also thin and tricky to locate by feel. I found focus pulls easier with my finger on the LCD screen than with the MF ring. While the FTM feature manual focus without flipping a switch, the gotcha is it only works when the camera is powered up with the shutter button half-pressed.

ZOOM: The ribbed zoom ring is large, grippy and reasonably smooth in rotation. During zoom operation, a small nested barrel extends from the main barrel. Oddly, it's fully retracted at 35mm but extended at 18 and 55. The 18-55 range is only 3X, but covers the most useful range for everyday snapshots.

IMAGE STABILIZER (IS) gives me three additional stops of additional hand holdable range at 55mm.

Five stars for its value and features. Much better than I expected. Considerably improved over previous versions. Internal focus(front element doesn't turn), practically silent focusing(even quieter than my 40mm STM), manual focus without flipping a switch(with shutter button pressed halfway), very good image quality for a budget general purpose lens. Haven't had it very long yet but plan on using it a lot. It's so small and light it's easy to carry around all day on my Canon 60D. The best is still the 17-55 2.8IS but it weighs a ton in comparison. I'm very happy with it.

I purchased this lens from one of the camera stores that sells Amazon as Amazon was out of stock at the time. This lens performs very well. I notice a great deall less barrel distortion than the previous models and the internal focusing is a great improvement over the previous models. I bought a Canon T4i Canon EOS Rebel T4i 18.0 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm EF-S IS II Lens in January and bought this lens recently to replace the kit lens that came with that camera for the specific purpose of shooting videos. When shooting video, this lens focuses quickly and accurately and in complete silence. When shooting stills it is at least as good as the previous model and in a side by side comparison I would say they were equal at 55 and 35 focal lengths with this newer model superior at 18 due to improvements in barrel distortion. After a couple of weeks I sold my old lens as there was no longer necessary. If you have a camera model older than the T4i you are most likely wasting your money with this lens as the STM focus requires the new hybrid CMOS to experience the full benefit of this lens. If you plan on replacing your camera then you should look at either the T4i or T5i and this lens is the new standard kit lens. However, if you alreay own a T4i and what to shoot video this is a great lens to replace your kit lens. I gave this five stars because it really does perform as well or better than previous models and adds extended Video capabilities. I don't really use this lens as my go lens as I own the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM UD Standard Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras. However, it is my go to lens for social events due to its video capabilities and lighter weight.

If you are looking for a lens that is good for AF on the Canon 70D for video, this would be one! I was hesitant in getting STM type lenses as I have read about the pancake version has noise, to my surprise, this was soo quiet that I thought it wasn't working. But it does work. So if you shoot videos with the 70D, get this or any STM type lenses, like the Canon 55-250mm
