Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The EOS-1V is a new addition to the celebrated Canon EOS System incorporating several significant innovations in durability, performance and customization. Featuring a weather-resistant all-metal body, the EOS-1V offers the fastest continuous shooting speed in its class at 10 frames per second (fps) in One Shot AF and 9 fps with AI Servo AF. The new camera also incorporates 20 built-in Custom Functions for fine-tuning of various camera settings, and is compatible with new EOS Link (software for downloading exposure information to a PC or uploading up to 30 "Personal Functions" to the camera. Other professional features include a 100 percent viewfinder with adjustable diopter, 1/250th second flash sync, and a top shutter speed of 1/8000th second.

This lightweight body is the perfect blend of rigidity, durability and total precision.
Canon built the body of the EOS-1V to deliver top performance regardless of the shooting environment. Top priority was placed on the precise machining of all parts. The aperture and hybrid framework structure which serve as the base for various parts and fittings are diecast aluminum, with glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate resin, which is equal in strength to metal. The main outside covers are made of magnesium alloy. The lightweight body benefits from remarkably improved rigidity, precision, and durability, realized by the optimum use of carefully chosen high-tech materials.

The EOS-1V's revolutionary shutter has been tested to 150,000 cycles.
The EOS-1V's electronically controlled rotary magnet shutter has been designed to eliminate the possibility of operational trouble. This shutter unit ensures constant operation that remains as accurate as its original performance even after long use and under severe shooting conditions.

In this shutter system, the first and second shutter curtains are controlled by a non-contact rotary magnet, which does not suffer sticking problems due to dust accumulation. The shutter blades are made of carbon fiber and super-duralumin, for high reliability in all shooting conditions over extended use.

The EOS-1V's capacity to capture moving subjects with the outstanding tracking performance and high focusing speed of 45-point Area AF propels autofocusing into the new millennium.
45-point Area AF is the result of Canon's pursuit of an AF system that allows continuous shooting ease and expanded framing freedom. The 45 focusing points are densely packed within an 8 x 15 mm zone and can be manually or automatically selected to meet the needs of the situation. When multiple points are selected, AF system capabilities are significantly extended. Born of Canon's original technology, this system has been refined for the EOS-1V to ensure the unconditional reliability, accuracy and high focusing speeds requisite for professional use.

At a rate of 9 fps, AI Servo AF delivers the fastest predictive focusing in the world.
The predictive AI Servo AF system allows the tracking of fast-moving objects while maintaining precise focus. This system affords impressive results in terms of continuous shooting and boasts excellent sequential processing efficiency.

Sequential processing regulates an array of events within the exposure process, including the arithmetic processing of AE and AF, the driving of the lens, aperture control, and movement of the mirror and shutter curtains.

In addition to developing new sequencing for the EOS-1V, every operation and its respective control time sequence has been reexamined in order to reduce operation time and realize parallel processing.

A significant step in the technology of the EOS-1V is the newly adopted Active Mirror Control method, which reduces the operation time of the mirror to allow shooting at a rate of 9 fps. This device is fundamental to the stability of the AI Servo AF system.

As for precision, the EOS-1V is capable of heightened focusing accuracy thanks to a newly developed predictive algorithm.

Amazing continuous shooting performance that can capture ten images in a single second.
The EOS-1V features the world's fastest continuous shooting speed, enabling film transport at an astounding rate of 10 fps. Now Canon gives you the power to transform one dramatic moment into a series of heart-stopping images. With the Power Drive Booster PB-E2 (driven by the NP-E2 Ni-MH Battery Pack) the EOS-1V allows unprecedented levels of visual creativity. Sensational gains in continuous shooting performance mean rapid film transport of up to 9 fps even in predictive AI Servo AF mode, which can focus track a subject approaching the camera at 50 km/h up to 8 meters away (with the EF 300 mm f/2.8L IS USM).

What's more, even when set at an intermediate film transport speed of around 3 to 5 fps, the EOS-1V demonstrates outstanding basic performance. For example, the viewfinder blackout time is remarkably shortened, the minimum distance at which a high-speed moving subject can be autofocused is reduced, and so on.

Sophisticated Auto Exposure Control.
Canon's exclusive AIM (Advanced Integrated Multi-Point control) system integrates Area AF and all six metering modes available with the EOS-1V.

Focus on a subject within the Area AF ellipse, and the EOS-1V will meter that area for the optimum result where it's needed most. All six metering modes use the 21-zone evaluative metering sensor.

Six metering modes, three flash metering modes capture your vision in all manner of lighting situations.

  • 21-Zone Evaluative Metering
  • Partial Metering
  • Center Spot Metering
  • Focusing Point-linked Spot Metering
  • Multi-spot Metering
  • Centerweighted Averaging Metering
  • E-TTL Autoflash AE
  • A-TTL Autoflash AE
  • TTL Autoflash AE

Six exposure modes for greater creative control.

  • Program AE
  • Shutter-speed Priority AE
  • Aperture Priority AE
  • Depth-of-field AE
  • Manual Exposure
  • Bulb

Optional EOS Link Software ES-E1 enables advanced customization, and management of shooting data, through PC connectivity.
If a PC is linked with the EOS-1V, camera functionality and the capacity for representation are markedly expanded. Simply connect the EOS-1V, via the Connecting Cable ES, to a PC with EOS Link Software ES-E1 installed.

Once connection is established you can achieve various forms of customization, function extension, data download by following messages on the monitor screen.

ES-E1 software is primarily intended for advanced Personal Function customization, so users of the EOS-1V can program it to reflect their personal preferences, shooting purposes and conditions. It also allows the management of data relating to settings used for exposed film.

Case in point, I recently did a salon shoot of a Ferrari 308GTB and the guy at my prolab said "the exposures were great, as usual."

Ditto for the autofocus, which is materially better than the autofocus in my slightly lower-end EOS Elan 7.

It's a shock to me to find that many years after release, no one has written a review of the EOS 1V. This is one sweet camera. It has a carved of a chunk feel that tells me that I can use it hard and not have to worry that it will let me down. There are enough pro features to cover any challenge.

I bought mine because I shoot a lot of motor sports and this baby autofocuses faster than my Nikon F5 (a camera I really like too). The metering system, once you extablish the proper ISO of your film, is dead nuts on. I leave the camera on "P" for program for most assignments and use the amazing matrix meter setting for surprisingly accurate results. Case in point, I recently did a salon shoot of a Ferrari 308GTB and the guy at my prolab said "the exposures were great, as usual."

Some cool things that I love about the EOS 1V: I wear glasses and I can see the entire view finder with ease. The camera handles like a dream in the horizontal and vertical position (mine has the motor drive with the second shutter release - I recommend it to any serious action shooter.) Film loading is a snap. With custom functions, you can prevent the camera from rewinding at the end of the roll - a good idea in a church or other quiet setting. The camera is weather sealed with gaskets on buttons and switches. If you have newer EOS lenses, these include gaskets around the lens mount. These, combined with the gasket built into the EOS 1V body help keep the moisture outside if you find yourself shooting in damp conditions. (No, the camera is not waterproof. But it's well sealed against all but the worst that mother nature can throw at you.

I shoot a lot of slide film, so in tricky lighting situations (e.g., back lighting, subjects that are very dark or very light, etc.

It feels odd to be reviewing this camera in 2009. It represents a technology that won't be coming back -- the caliber of images from quality digital SLRs now equals 35mm film, and digital is easier to work with. For a while, some people used excuses like "Kodachrome has better archival properties than digital storage," but Kodachrome has been cancelled, and after December 2010, it won't be possible to get any remaining rolls processed. Those who use film in education are unlikely to buy a professional camera like the 1v, and those who use film cameras for their atavistic style are probably more likely to pick up a rangefinder.

The things that make the 1v great are primarily of interest to professionals -- 45 autofocus points, and very rapid autofocus even by the standards of a decade later, extraordinary quick film advance (10 images/second with the PB-E2 winder attached, and everybody who buys the 1v also buys the winder), massive customizability for a film camera (and yet, of course, nowhere near the customizability of any mid-range digital camera, where effective ISO rating and white point can be changed on the fly). There are probably some professionals out there still using their 1vs for these advantages, but I doubt anybody is buying new ones.

As a result, these camera are now widely available in the used market, often in superb condition. The 1v is a tough camera -- you could probably use one to pound nails and still sell it on eBay as "near mint".

This is a an amazing piece of engineering, a pleasure to hold and use. I use it mostly in Program or Av modes, and other than the standard caveat to adjust settings for a silhouetted subject, it makes good decisions.

For those of you that think your $10 camera in your iPhone 5 takes great pictures, you will never understand the quality of pictures that can be taken with this camera and canon's 35 mm/1.4 lens. Try blowing up one of your high definition pictures the size of a wall in Grand Central Station and see what it looks like. Well that has been done with a canon film camera and Kodak's 35 mm Kodachrome slide and it was grainless. Your high definition picture would have pixels the size of your head.

You can not fault this camera. It does everything a film camera can do and more and does it well. The film even gets physically numbered on the corner for easier archiving. If you pair it up with the EOS cable link you can connect it to a PC running Windows 7 and the virtual XP machine (that comes standard with Windows 7) and you can review recorded shooting data stored inside the camera for your last 99 rolls (i think). You can also customize the button functions that way. There is even an option to roll the film slower at the end of film for minimum noise or fast. It is still superior to recent digital in terms of construction as the whole body is magnesium alloy with the parts that you grab are covered in non slip ruggedized hard plastic on top of the magnesium. Because of that they tend to look new forever whereas the 1d*_***** series plastic get beaten down aspect after a few years. As of now the 1d, 1ds, 1d mark II, 1ds mark II, 1d mark III all digital SLR that came after the 1v are no longer in production but the 1v is still being produced. This tells you how good it is. Realistically the only weakness is not in the camera but with it's dependance to processing and scanning (unless you just print photos). Its advantages are : you can use very high resolution and DR black and white film or use positive film (slides) both which you cannot do at the same level of results with digital even today on a full frame sensor (35mm).
