5.0 out of 5 stars One stop shop for all 60D related questions. December 30, 2010
I am beginner to the world of digital SLR photography and I found the book to be very informative. It covers all aspects of operation of the camera, advanced topics and a lot of useful tips for taking photography. I believe every operational feature of the camera is described and the options enumerated and the trade-offs for those clearly stated. The book is very well illustrated with sample shots and makes it very easy to understand the concept being explained.

The book takes a very comprehensive approach to a guide. The beginning of the book gives detailed information of all the shooting modes and how to customize and use them. The latter half of the book focuses on photography based on subject types, like chapters dedicated to event, landscape, portraits, etc. There are also appendices that cover some of the technical aspects of exposure, which I found particularly interesting. The book also comes with a Gray card and color checker, which I plan to use to work on my exposures. Finally, I found the section of setting the custom controls on the 60D useful, this was one of those feature that I couldn't clearly figure out by toying with the camera.

Overall, I was quite happy with the book and felt that I understood the 60D much more than when I started reading.

It transformed the camera from what had been an expensive and frustrating toy into an expressive tool that is a joy to use.

The book is much more comprehensive than the manual. It is better organized and it has a clean design that makes the pages much easier to read.

And, unlike the manual, this book explains not just how to adjust the camera's settings but gives extensive reasons and scenarios about when, and why, they should be adjusted. The more I learned about the controls and their functions, the more I liked the camera.

The book not only covers in depth the features and functions of the camera but includes a series of chapters dedicated to specific photo types, ie nature and landscape photography, action and event photography, portrait photography, macro photography etc. Shooting mode considerations, exposure techniques, alternate approaches etc are among the topics examined. The sample photos with settings notes are a helpful addition.

One of my favorite chapters was dedicated to 'getting great exposure and focus'. I had purchased the 60D with hopes of getting better bird photos but my first trips out with it had been a disaster. The book helped a LOT!

I also found the chapters on using live view, and on setting up custom modes to make the camera quicker to use in different shooting situations especially useful.

There is also a very useful chapter on flash units, and on lenses and accessories that will add to the camera capabilities. I wish I had read it earlier, I would have purchased a faster lens.

The tips and notes interjected throughout the book were a generous touch. So was the grey card /color checker that was included to tear out and tuck in the camera bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the book I needed for Canon 60D January 18, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Canon 60D is a great camera with many powerful features. Although I have got some experience with Canon T1i before, I have found that this book has helped me to be a better photographer and become more effective at taking shots. It definitely can help you to make better choices on the customization of settings under different modes, which is a nice and attractive feature Canon 60D has offered, and that could be beneficial to both advanced users and beginners. After receiving the book, I couldn't wait to finish it, and I have also been going through it again and again. When I play the camera, if I notice something I don't know, I go back to the book for some references from time to time. Overall, this has been my best buy since having the camera. In my opinion, this is a must buy if you have a Canon 60D.

4.0 out of 5 stars In general, an excellent resource worth buying December 31, 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought a 60D one week before taking it off to South America and a couple of weeks in Peru (including some time in a remote village). Since the camera was new and I wasn't giong to have much time to actually use it prior to leaving, I bought this book hoping it would be useful on the road. (I had LOTS of time to read while traveling despite the ocassional dristracting chicken or sheep riding in the bus with me.)

It turned out to be just that -- a very helpful guide that filled me in on a ton of little tricks and tips that I wouldn't have uncovered so quickly -- especially since I mistakenly packed trhe Spanish version of canon's user guide instead of gteh Enlgish version!). My biggest problem was that it is not really field guide because of one glaring problem. I kept finding the index lacking in important topics that I needed in the field quickly.

For example, I was never able to find out how much space was available on the SD cards that I was using. Since they were 32gb cards, I was pretty sure space was not a problem, but i wanted to know for certain. I couldn't find an index entry that would help with that. When I returned to civilization, a quick internet search showed that hitting the format option displayed the amount of space used. Another action or two is needed to actually format so my files were safe from acccidental erasure. I then returned to the index and couldn't find an entry for fomatting either.

Still, I would buy the book again in a heartbeat and thoroughly recommend it (but less enthusiastiucally in my unique situation of being a 60D newbie relying almost totally on this book for help in the field).
