Very readable,

This review is from: Canon EOS 30D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (Paperback)
David Busch set out to write a book wich will help 30D users understand both the features of the camera and digital photograhy in general. It's the only book on the 30D that I know of that doesn't read like a manual, especially beginning with the fourth chapter.
Busch does a really good job of trying to break down what making photo instead of what taking a photo is all about. He gets beyond the manual approach which is not an easy task when talking about a particular camera. He makes a good attempt to explains important points about exposure, lens types, and lighting. Some parts of the book could use more illustration and step by step examples, but overall it's very readable for novice and intermediate 30D digital photographers. It's very nicely laid out with lots of white space for writing notes and underlining. The photos included in the book are not spactacular, but some are very useful illustrating the points he tries to make. I would imagine that this book would be very useful to read along side Busch's other book on pro level digital photography secrets.

From Raw Beginner to Advanced Amateur,

This review is from: Canon EOS 30D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (Paperback)
The back of this book says that it is a book suited for the beginning to intermediate user of the camera. I think they have left out a category into which I fit, that is, the person who is trying to evaluate just which digital SLR to buy. I got the decision down to Canon and Nikon. Buying a couple of $20 books and I had an awful lot more information than was available in the sales literature and the magazine articles combined.
This book takes a light and breezy approach to the 30D. It's a sort of combination of the manual that comes with the camera (in that it tells you about all the controls and settings), and a book on what the impact of all these controls really mean, and a book on digital photography in general. The book is organized to get you started taking pictures in the first 2 or 3 chapters, and the remaining chapters cover features that go beyond the basic settings to accomplish those special tasks that set the raw amateur (who might as well have a point and shoot camera) from the advanced or the pro. All in all, the book was exactly what I wanted.

Canon EOS 30D Guide to Digital SLR Photography,

The Guide is very basic and offers easy, straight forward orientation to the 30D and digital photography. It is a very good, readable summary of the 30D's features with good examples of the camera's myriad controls and set-up options.

Canon 30D book,
This review is from: Canon EOS 30D Guide to Digital SLR Photography (Paperback)
One of the only items I actually received when ordering through Amazon.Book is a good basic intro to the Canon 30D Camera. It expands nicely on the manual that comes with the camera, is not at all technical, and offers some ideas as to which settings to use and when. Good for those transitioning up to a more advanced D-SLR.

This book is designed primarily for the novice photographer with some understanding of SLR-speak. If that describes you, it's a wonderful book. It's a lot more interesting and user-friendly than the instruction manual for the 30D, but if you're a serious amateur or a pro who's converted to digital, it's simplistic. That's not to say I haven't found it helpful. There isn't really anything that I didn't already know, but the presentation is well done and it makes for great quick reference. I was hoping for something a little more advanced when I ordered it, so in that respect I was disappointed.
So, about the 4 star rating I gave it... It's an average: 3 stars if you're an adept photographer, 5 stars if you're not so experienced.

This is the best book I have on the 30D. I now have the 40D but will probably wait till the author writes one for it before I buy any third party book.

Great Book, Easy Read,

Well written and easy to follow along with. This book made understanding the workings of my 30D easy. I hate B&W manuals that have you flipping back and fourth between pages so this book was perfect for me.

If you are new to photography and you just bought a Canon EOS 30D then this book is perfect for you. The technical level of the content is just right to keep you interested but does not insult your intiligence.

I felt like if my wife could spend $1200.00 on a camera i could spend twenty bucks on how to use it. If you are a beginning photographer and have never used a high end digital SLR I would highly recommened this book. However, if you have somewhat of an understanding for photography i would pass on it. In my opinion it is just a fancier version of the instruction manual that came with the camera. It has decent illustrations and is well written. It's a nice book for anyone who has recently bought a Canon 30D and serves as a good reference book.

Worlds easier to understand than the manual it came with,

I have been using my husband's "Retired" 30D and wanted to understand the millions of things that it can do. I paid all that money for it and want it to be more than a paper weight or really heavy point and shoot! This book explains so much more than the owner's manual and its a million times easier to read and understand. There are a few times when I have had to flip back and forth to find illistrations so that I can understand what function we are applying to it. I think that is true of any book but I do feel the illistrations are placed better within the book than most books are.
I have enjoyed having it and it fits well in my big camera bag so I can take it with me and refer to it... Not a pocket size reference which I love because that means I can actually read the words and see full color examples/illistrations with ease. WELL WORTH the money and time! |
