The Hi8 video format features 400 lines of resolution, the highest quality outside of digital. Equipped with a 2.5-inch color LCD view screen and video light, Canon's Hi8 ES420V employs an integrated autofocus/autoexposure system that helps eliminate incorrect focus and exposure settings. Its 22x optical zoom lens is intensified by a digital zoom that enhances the range electronically to 700x.

There is also an additional set of special effects available during both recording and playback that will help add a little flavor to your movies. These effects include black-and-white, sepia, mirror, and mosaic, among others. Included in the package are an A/V cable, power adapter, shoulder strap, and battery pack.

For those occasions when you want to change the focus field of the frame, Canon's Flexizone AF/AE allows you to tell the ES420V what to keep in focus as you shoot. A pre-set titling function lets you effortlessly insert professional-looking text messages onto your finished video. Other effects allow you to add art, or shoot in Black and White, Sepia, Negative, Mirror, and Mosaic. A 16:9 aspect ratio feature can be used to achieved a film-like look, and a Cinema feature enhances this effect as well. Package all of this with a dual battery holder that affords you up to 14 hours of continuous recording time, and you've got a serious alternative to a digital video camcorder, at a fraction of the price.

I haven't used very many camcorders yet, so I don't think I can fairly compare the ES420V against the competition. I can tell you that while I was impressed with all the features of the camcorder, I found it hard to hold and confusing to use ONLY at first. The video quality was impressive though, especially considering the relatively low expenditure. Compared to the Canon Elura2, I'd choose the Elura2 -- it's a bit easier to use and includes impressive stills. If you're in the market for a camcorder under [price], the ES420Vis ideal!
