5.0 out of 5 stars Got this for my Canon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens
Works perfectly for the 18-200mm lens. However, you will not be able to put the lens cap on/off easily with the hood on UNLESS you also have a UV filter, which extends the lens out a little bit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mounted on EF-S 18-200mm IS f/3.5-5.6 with 450D/XSi body, February 4, 2009

Paid $25 for it brand new. Red marker is useful for aligning hood for quick installation. Inside petals have a matte layer to prevent internal light reflections into the lens. Cheaper aftermarket hoods may not have this additional matte layer. You will not be able to use the stock lens cap with this hood installed so think about upgrading to an aftermarket center-pinched snap-on lens cap and most will come with a very useful tether string so you don't misplace the lens cap. In addition, you will not be able to use the internal flash on the 450D/XSi with the hood attached to the 18-200mm lens because the upper petal will cast a shadow anything above 80mm zoom. Maybe the 40D/50D does not have this issue? An external 430EX or 580EX flash being mounted higher may eliminate this issue.

Works as it should be. I attached it on XSi and it fits well without gap. You can attach the hood in the opposite direction for easy storage and transportation. The price is a little expensive for a plastic piece.

I ordered this item because I wanted an "authentic" Canon EW-78D lens hood, which features a felt-like inner lining to reduce reflections. The item was sold by Anatolian Store (and fulfilled by Amazon.com), and sold for $41 at the time of my order. What I actually received was a "generic," knock-off lens hood, which sells elsewhere on Amazon for $9-10. The deception was deliberate, as the item was delivered in a Canon box. If I did not already own a similar Canon lens hood in a different size, I probably would not have suspected that I had been the victim of a switch. The "real" item features a felt-like inner lining and a red dot for alignment, and says "Canon EW-78D CANON, INC. MADE IN JAPAN" along the top edge. The knock-off item does not feature the felt-like lining or red dot, and says "For Canon EW-78D" along the top edge. The item itself probably works adequately well, and was not defective. But a $9 knock-off should be sold as a $9 knock-off, not as a $41 brand-name product. I actually decided to keep the product I received, and Amazon.com did the right thing and refunded the difference. The problem is with Anatolian Store, which sold me a knock-off product in a Canon box, at a full Canon price.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOLID Lens Hood, December 7, 2010

Excellent lens hood, VERY solid construction. Don't be fooled by lower priced imitators - pay cheap, get cheap. Pay for quality and you'll get quality. No problems encountered so far!

5.0 out of 5 stars CANON-PETAL SHAPED LENS HOOD, March 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon EW-78D Lens Hood for EF Lens (Electronics)
I purchased this official Canon lens hood for my new Canon EF-S 18-200 mm lens that is 72 mm in diameter. This will greatly assist in more accurate metering and keeping out stray rays of strong sunlight. It is reversible- which just means that you can turn it around on the lens itself in order to carry and store it in a camera case more compactly. Off brand hoods may not be able to do this. They may just screw on the front way. Also, off brands may not have that red dot to quickly line up the hood onto the lens barrel. The plastic feels strong, yet slightly flexible, which is probably a good thing. ( If you accidently bang it into something, it will give a little instead of being stiff or brittle and not absorb the shock.) The inside of the hood is finished well with a non-reflective short black felt. I'm surprised that I was able to come up with all this info on just a lens hood! I guess this all leads to my point that it really is worth it to pay more for the genuine item from Canon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Be careful... Amazon can charge you additional shipment fees due to side supplier of this item, August 23, 2011

Amazon does not inform at the buttom line of final charge that this side supplier can charge you for shippment and the amount of this shipment charge can reach almost the price of this peace of plastic. they charged me $27 for item which weight less than 100gr and itself costs $37. it's not a precise equipment, nore very precious so it requires such considerable charges for shipment.
Amazon has to notify at the final summ of payment that some additional charges can be applied due to some third part. the final decision to pay or do not pay should be mine, but not as a matter of fact that some third part supplier adds some unknown fees on theat final price.

This lens hood does what it's supposed to do. It was a little tricky @ first never having experience with one before, it kept falling off easily, but now I know how to put it on properly after many uses. =)

Nice to have specially when you are outdors - it protects the lens when getting banged around hanging from your neck. Be careful with obstruction shadows when used with a flash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lens Hood for Canon EF 28-200mm, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Canon EW-78D Lens Hood for EF Lens (Electronics)
As beach wedding photographers, our new EF-28-300 lens did not come with this hood. It is a must have for anyone who shoots outdoors! Prevents lens flare / glare from the sun - it screws on in a snap on site and stores for travel right on the lens - just turned inward and screw on. Amazon had great prices and reliable quick delivery!
