In addition to the advantage of added recording time, flash memory offers more to you as well. You'll appreciate its quick response time, because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your FS40 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will start playing more quickly as well. Another plus is the FS40's low power consumption rate, allowing your battery to last longer. It's just what you need so you don't miss that pivotal play on the field or the moment when they say "I do." While we certainly hope you keep your FS40 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss if you accidentally jolt or drop your camcorder.

With Quick Start you’ll never miss a quickly unfolding shot again. When the FS40's LCD panel is closed, it is placed in standby. When the action starts, open the LCD panel and you'll begin recording in less than one second. You'll also help extend your battery life as compared to leaving the camcorder in regular recording mode. The FS40 captures and records true 16:9 High Resolution Widescreen for picture perfect video. It comes from Canon's sophisticated image processing system, which uses the entire width of the image sensor, capturing true 16:9 widescreen. The additional pixels captured deliver better image quality. Quick Charge When you've got a lot to shoot but not a lot of time to recharge your batteries, the Quick Charge feature comes to the rescue. In 20 minutes, you can charge up to approximately 60 minutes of recording time! It's ultra-fast battery charging when you need it most. The Pre-Record feature places your FS40 in a stand-by "pre-roll" mode. With this feature the camcorder continuously records three seconds of video to memory before you even press the record button. When you start recording, the additional video is recorded too. It will be easier than ever to capture the moment when the bat hits the ball at the start of that home run. You’ll take the compact, lightweight FS40 wherever you go, so to give you the best exposure settings for different conditions and subjects, automatically, you’ll have Program AE. Portrait mode ensures shallow depth of field for a pleasing background to your shots of friends and family. Sports mode stops the action with faster shutter speeds. A Night Scene mode is designed to give you more accurate and natural shots in very low light conditions by reducing noise and preventing the overexposure of building and street lighting. Snow and Beach modes compensate for bright surroundings and give you the proper exposure on your subject. Sunset mode results in vibrant, well-exposed colors for one of the toughest subjects to capture. In Low light mode, it’s possible to shoot in situations where you have as little as 1.3 lux of available illumination when you don’t want to add additional light. Use Spotlight mode when your child is on stage and in the spotlight – literally – and you want to make sure the exposure is right for them. mode records brilliant images of another tough subject: the holiday fireworks display. The FS40's Grid Marker feature lets you compose your shot accurately. You can even choose from two different colors for the grid. This ensures that you see the grid, no matter what the background color of your shot is. Flicker reduction is also a feature of the FS40, with a setting available to minimize the pulsing of light sources, such as fluorescent bulbs which can spoil your footage, especially when shooting at night or in other low light situations. |

So Far, So Good,

This review is from: Canon FS400 Flash Memory Camcorder with 41x Advanced Zoom and SDXC Card Slot (Blue) (Electronics)
I received this yesterday (22 Apr 2011).
INITIAL THOUGHTS I wanted a basic camcorder to capture the typical kids events, vacation stuff, etc. I'm not trying to make pro quality videos, so the Standard Definition is fine...the widescreen format is a plus. Prior to purchasing this, my main concerns were what file type it would record as and how smoothly the transfer to my computer would go. Videos on the SD card are recorded as a .mod file which are converted to a .mpg during transfer (if you use the Pixela software that comes with the camcorder). Transferring to the computer was pretty straight forward and fairly intuitive...my old Vista machine with a 1.8Ghz processor easily handled the transfer and conversion. The size of the device is great; it truly fits in the palm of my hand. The ergonomics are laid out well. On screen menus are not overly cumbersome or confusing. The LCD panel is very bright and readable outdoors. Video quality is what I expected from a camcorder at this price - not eye popping good, but not grainy and jerky either. Videos are clear and smooth. I haven't taken enough videos to judge the battery life or video quality in different settings. Overall, I feel like I got what I paid for. At this time, I'll say, "So Far, So Good".

This has been a nightmare! I called Apple, researched for hours, and still couldn't find how to make this camera compatible with iMacs and iMovie. Well, it took a call to Canon where I spoke with a very pleasant representative after zero wait! Here's how you do it: 1) Open up iMovie 2) Turn on your camera 3) Display your recorded clip on the camera screen (don't play it just display it) 4) Plug the USB into the computer USB port (no firewire necessary) Voila!! There it is. Just import it from the camera and you're on you way to editing fun. I had all this done and my video uploaded on YouTube within 10 minutes. Have a good time with this wonderful little camera. It may not be HD but the pictures are sharp, the color is brilliant and I can't tell the difference. It's not hard to use and its not hard to carry. I highly recommend this little super priced camera.

Seemed to fit the bill for a small road-trip video camera. It zooms in pretty well and seems to stay focused ok for a camera in this price range. The software it comems with seems a bit goofy and it did not recognize the camera when it was plugged in to the USB port. I had to pop out the mem card and plug that in instead.
Overrall ... not bad for the money. 2115|R3O474691YENDW;2115|R236A6DSRCWZH6;2115|RR0R9NDX1N1V9;
