3.0 out of 5 stars Does as claimed... for a price, December 8, 2005
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS D880 Laser Printer, Copier, Fax (Office Product)
Pros:
+ Adaptive and flexible: have ethernet, USB and LPT as connection options make this machine as adaptable as a gator to a marshy body of dihydra monoxide
+ Quality: undeniably supreme printouts
+ Speed: stellar. You can print then fax a doc in less than a minute
+ Set-Up: Wonderful. Albeit a heavy and bulky beast, connections and printer set up are a breeeeeze
+ Packaging: Overkill! But, I suppose there's very good reason behind all the taping and stuffing and taping... did I mention taping?
+ Compatibility: fabulously compatible with any OS out there. Via the pricey Axis 1650 net server, we utilize this printer on both XP and Mac OS'. Piece of cake for set up... even behind firewalls (which Canon cleverly has developed a program allowing you to alter your firewall settings with the execution of a program).
Cartridge longevity: stats reveal 5000 output. We'll see.
+ Functionability: a plethora of preprogrammed buttons allows this machine to be what you want it to be and do what you wish it to do. If you're a 1-man/woman or small company, this machine is perfect for you. Prints, faxes and copies tout de suite.

+ Tech support: going the email route, you'll get a timely response. If using the phone, holding time isn't long and everyone seems to speak English quite well! Amazing.

Cons
- I went around and round with the powers to be at Canon about the price of this device yet including only a STARTER CARTRIDGE. I also fault Amazon for NOT identifying it properly on the part that reads, "What's in the box." It should specifically read STARTER CARTRIDGE. Canon's response was "we do it because we're uncertain if the consumer will keep the product." HUH!? What about those of us who buy to keep? I informed them they have a very negative view on marketing. And, I said, at the very least, you should follow suit with Okidata. That is, offer a decent discount on the first cartridge purchase from your store--Okidata offers you a 25% first purchase discount. No can do of Canon. All they are good at as offering apologies but refuse to budge. I thoroughly lambasted the firm on this. I think they are tired of hearing from me. ;)

- Pricey parts. The Axis print server is nearly 200 more smackers! The cartridge is about $150. Wow. If you buy this product and wish to expand, prepare to pay a price. My suggestion? Thoroughly hunt the web for a better price. Regarding the cartridge? Use ebay. You can contact sellers and make an offer to Buy It Now and most will oblige--so you don't have to wait 6 days or so for an auction to end. Regarding the server, shop, shop, and shop. There are small firms out there in which you can get this product for a tad over a hundred.

- extension: cheaply designed and very cheaply made! If you nudge it, it looks like it'll bust.

I guess that's about it for now. If I think of something else, I'll attempt to return and supplement. Hope this helps. Out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon D880 , you can't go wrong, May 29, 2007
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS D880 Laser Printer, Copier, Fax (Office Product)
The Canon ImageClass D880 is probably the best multifunction unit available for under $600 now. Although Canon has discontinued it they are still available if you search Amazon or on the Internet. This is solid performer for black and white copying, printing, and faxing. I have been dissapointed in the long run by the color multifunction units that are very expensive to operate, inks dry out if you are not doing a lot of color work, and the units fail just after the year warranty expires. Canon backs these with a 3 year warranty so it tells you how much confidence they have in the product. The D860 lacks the fax capabilities if you don't need that and is about $100.00 less. Both use the same printing mechanism. The D880 is well made with a very good auto document feeder. Collating functions, easy enlargement/reduction functions, large copying surface with up to legal size printing, and many other easily accessable features make it a very well thought out machine. I have never had a problem with Canon which is more than I can say for some other well known companies that make multifunction units. You only need a 0.2 inch margin to get the entire image copied which is much better than the .75 needed on some cheaper brands. The L50 Toner has a good life span and although you probably won't get 5000 copies from it, compare it to 250-300 copies from the little ink cartrdiges. I have been the HP and Epson route, enticed by card slots and glossy photo output. That was a mistake. Since most of us load our pictures onto the computer we can print from an inexpensive color printer if we need to. Remember a product that promises to do everything for you usually does nothing all that well.
The D880 will give your office or home office a reliable printer/copier/fax that will last for many years.

5.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Business Class Machine, February 8, 2007
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS D880 Laser Printer, Copier, Fax (Office Product)
This copier-fax printer is a solid heavy duty piece of equipment. I have two, one purchased two years ago and a second one recently purchased through Amazon. It has functioned flawlessly, spitting out high quality copies, printing for my computer and sending and receiving faxes. The single cartridge toner system works fine. I've found remanufactured toners cartridges at about $-2-5- each on Eb*y, much better than the one-fifty they go for new. The 500 sheet paper tray is great. So much easier to simply load a ream and forget it.

While not inexpensive, you get what you pay for. Light-duty flimsy machines are not the way to go if you want a machine that will funtion reliably. I've recently returned a Canon MF5770 that was described as being suitable for busienss use but was decidedly light-duty. I highly recommend this Canon D880 copier.
