Are you shocked by the price of this printer? I was, and in fact was sceptical enough to go to the Canon technical website to find out "what's the catch?". I found there was no catch. This printer uses the same X25 toner cartridge, and has the same output specs, as the highly-ranked Canon MF5550 (see the review in PC Magazine, August 2004). I surmised the two printers...

1.0 out of 5 stars it is very bad
I had this machine for two years. The first year was great. Now, it gave me all kind of the troubles. The worst one is the paper jam. it will jam even you only put one page in the paper tray.It also has problems with paper setting. It will give you error messages even when you have the correct setting.Horrible product.

I surmised the two printers share the same "engine". So I bought the MF3110, despite the suspiciously low price. And now I'm very happy -- this is the real McCoy! The print quality matches any laser printer you've ever used, and the machine is FAST -- earlier today I queued up a 36 page print job (a PDF of a US Patent) and it was done by the time I had made a cup of tea in the microwave.

The scanner and copier functions work fine. The scanner is 1200x2400 optical, 9600x9600 interpolated (who needs 9600 DPI??!!), with 48-bit color depth.

The negatives? The bundled OmniPage OCR software is a stripped down version. It works, but the snazziest features (like direct reading of PDF files) are disabled, because OmniPage wants you to upgrade to their $150 "pro" version. Still, for something like extracting text from a newspaper clipping or magazine page, the included version works fine.

Double-sided printing is do-able, but it takes some care if you want to print a lot of pages. First you print the even pages, then you reload them into the paper cassette with a certain orientation. The key is to make the stack neat otherwise the printer complains (it didn't jam or skip pages, but a warning message comes up on the LCD). If you have only a few pages to print double-sided, the easiest way is to feed the 2nd round through the single-page feeder slot (which also prints envelopes).

This is a really nice multi-function printer if you like super-crisp text, or if you need to print dozens of pages at one go & don't want to wait forever. And of course it's nice to use as a stand-alone copier even if the computer is turned off.

4.0 out of 5 stars 5 star is for perfect - and nothing is !, February 17, 2005

I read and researched ALL sorts of laser printers (didnt include Canon) and then went into officedepot to buy a Brother. and then saw this pretty looking Canon. i looked and looked again and then again. and did not find a catch either. A very well designed printer that looks good and performs beautifully. It uses the X25 cartridge (combo) unit which is rated for about 2500 pages and costs about 50 dollars, giving a per page cost of 2 cents - pretty good i'd say. Setup was pretty easy - no complicated hoops to jump through. And once the software is setup, you just sit back and enjoy ! Very short warm-up time (about 3-5 seconds i'd say). And although it makes as much noise as any other laser printer i've seen, print speed is pretty fast. The print quality is very good, very sharp and crisp prints - THE reason i wanted a laser printer.
Printer paper output tray is located in the middle of the body making it easy to retrieve printed copies. A nice touch is the fact that the lid can be lifted up vertically (from the hinges) about 3-4 inches, so you could copy a page from a book if you wanted. Oh and its a stand-alone copier too - you dont need to boot the computer up for this.
Scanning speed and resolution are good although not being a heavy user of the scanning function in general, i cant comment much on that feature.
Additional bonus, includes a USB cable (USB 2.0) - not a feature most other printers provide.

Something to be aware of -> the numeric keypad might give you a wrong impression that fax is built-in too - its NOT. So if you do a lot of faxing, look at someother printer (although i like it so much, i would continue to use my computer to send and receive faxes)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product that lives up to its specs!, April 5, 2005
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
The Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction printer proudly stands a-top our desk, looking right at us, smiling, and with its tongue sticking out. Once you purchase one and set it up, you will understand what I mean (Just look right at it). This laser printer is ready for action the moment you set it up. The warmup time is outstanding (3 - 5 seconds max). I do not wait for it; it waits for me. The text is sharp and crisp on this blue and white monster. Compared to its competition of quality, the MF3110 is compact in size. Although you may find some that are smaller, you will not get the same performance in quality. This monster gives you 21PPM, 1200X600 DPI print, 1200x2400 DPI scan, and it lifts up from the hinges making it easier to copy pages from a book all for a reasonable price. To top it all off, this printer actually comes with a USB Cable. There are many other less important features that I enjoy, however I will conclude.

In conclusion, I had no complaints about the Canon ImageCLASS MF3110.

My suggestion: Do your research before buying any printer. Read reviews from multiple sites and remember that everyones' experience is different. Be open enough to realize that we live in a world of flesh (Humans) and even the manufactures make mistakes. For this reason it is extremely important to purchase a replacement plan that has a no lemon policy (i.e. breaks three times, and you get a replacement). Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Functional & Affordable!, December 17, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
Let's get straight to the point. I researched several different laser printers, before finally settling on this one. I needed a fast laser quality printer and did not have much money to spend. I was skeptical, but after much contemplation, I purchased the Cannon ImageClass MF3110 Laser Multifunction and I have not been disappointed. It prints & copies at 21ppm & has a flatbed scanner...all for what I would have paid to just do one of these functions. Sure, there are many others that may be fancier, do more tricks or perform a little better than this one...but there is NONE at this price. I must emphasize that this is a BRAND NEW unit (No refurbished throw-back here). Think about it...in your home or office, there is always something else you will need. You can use the money you saved on this and buy it. Oh, before I conclude this review (BTW-my first, I was so impressed with this unit)---I have to comment also on the ease of installation--particularly to non-technical people like me. I spent more time getting the factory-sealed unit out the box than it took to install (in less than 5 minutes). Trust me, for home or small office use---this is all you need. If 5 stars is perfection, this is an easy 4. I hope this helps you decide. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast and functional product, but no fax capability, May 10, 2005

I have been using this printer for a few months now, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a combination laser printer and scanner. The set up was easy and worked well out of the box (I installed on both Windows XP and Windows 2000). The best feature is that this printer is lightning fast in printing the first page and also subsequent pages. I also like the manual feed slot for single sheets of paper and envelopes. I use it a lot for printing of 2 pages on a single sheet of paper (double sided printing). Another feature which I like is that this laser printer uses a single cartridge system, so the cost for replacement is constant each time (instead of a periodic big cost for drum replacement after every 4 toner replacement). Both systems add up to about the same cost, depending on where you buy the replacement cartridges.
In looking for multifunction printers, I purposely avoided the ones with autofeed because my previous HP Multifunction 6110 autofeeder tends to get stuck. Speaking of paper jam, keep the printer manual close by the printer and read the instructions carefully on how to remove paper jams to prevent printer damage. I haven't had any paper jam printing single sided, but it did happen to me once when printing doublesided.
One big missing feature is that this printer doesn't do fax. But I knew that when I bought the printer, so it gets a perfect score for performing according to specs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck., July 18, 2006
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
For the money, you cant beat this printer. It works as advertised! My kids would go through ink on a ink jet like it was water. But they now have been printing quality papers for school, without bugging me about the ink running low. I was spending 60 bucks every couple of months for ink. This laser printer was the best investment for me...it actually is saving me money. My whole family has been printing on this machine for a couple of months now, and the quality of print is still fantastic! I have done alot of research, and when it comes time to replace the toner cart on this machine, it is the cheapest of all the lasers I have looked at. Alot of laser printers one will eventually have to change the drum along with the toner cart, and that is very expensive. This machine however, one only has to change the toner cart, because everything is built into the cart. I can replace this cart for under 60 bucks, (just google search for this particular toner cart). I love it! Thanks Cannon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Quality; Unbeatable price, November 21, 2005
By
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I recently bought this Cannon multi function laser printer/copier/scanner for my business and it has served me superbly. I did some extensive research before buying this printer to see which one best suite my needs. As a small business with moderate printing needs, I was looking for an affordable laser printer/scanner to print letters to my clients. After looking at all the printers out there, this Canon MF3110 was undoubtedly the one for me.

First of all, the price was unbelievable. At first, I thought it was refurbished but after going to Canon's website and looking at the product description and MSRP, I was blown away by its price. Secondly, what sold me was the fact that this printer uses a one cartridge system toner. If you look at most of the inexpensive laser printers out there, mainly brother and dell, they use a toner cartridge and a toner drum, both of which come separately. What most people do not know is that with these multiple cartridge systems, you have to replace the toner and the drum separately. We all know that toner for laser printers are not cheap but a toner drum for these printers can cost you as much as the printer itself. If you go to the product website, they won't mention this very clearly because if you knew that you would have to replace a toner as well as the drum, you would obviously not buy that printer. When I talked to a sales rep from Dell, he tried to justify this by saying I need to change the drum once every 10,000 - 15,000 pages and that it would last me years before I have to replace it. True! But still, it's an added expense and if you do a lot of printing, it adds up.

This Canon however uses a single cartridge, like the HPs. The only thing you have to replace is one cartridge. I am not saying that this kind of system is better or worse than the ones that use multiple cartridges. All I am saying is for me, this seemed more convenient and economical in the long haul.

Quality wise, this printer is great for the price I paid for it. Starting time for the first page was about 5-10 seconds depending on the size of the document, not bat at all. I admit, it is rather nosier than some of the comparable HP lasers but I figured, for under $200 you can't have your cake and eat it too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, August 14, 2005
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
I had a crappy Epson inkjet printer (which I happily threw in the garbage!). If I didn't use it for a while, the nozzles would clog up. It was a piece of garbage nuisance. Although this Canon does not have color (it does scan in color though) I LOVE this thing. Truthfully, even though the pictures it prints are black and white, they blow the color Epson inkjet pics out of the water. It's not small (which is the only negative), but the QUALITY and SPEED are amazing. Plus, it only took about three seconds to install. Aside from the great laser printing and scanning, it's like having a regular copy machine in your house. I've only had it for a few days, but for this price, don't even look at any other options. Two thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for VALUE, January 9, 2006
This review is from: Canon ImageCLASS MF3110 Laser Multifunction (Office Product)
a 5 star rating is admittedly very high, but this multifunction machine merits them all on the basis of value. I am truly dumbfounded by the quality and features you get for such a low price. There is no catch, it is the real deal. Speedy, high quality black and white laser prints and a very capable scanner. Just what is needed for the SOHO environment. It replced my old NEC 870 printer which was a workhorse for 7.5 years before dying. I am so impressed by it that I am recommending it to all my friends. I do way too much research before I buy a product like this and it has surpassed my expectations.
