This product is used the isolate the microphone from the camera; so you don't get any gear noise when zooming in and out. This product also allows you to attach a variety of shotgun microphones with different diameters to your camera as well.
Here's where you need to be careful. The company that manufactures this product has a new version available. The one pictured here is the old model and can only fit the standard Canon microphone. If all you want to do is isolate your original Canon mic, then you don't need to worry about the version. If you're looking at this product to use as an adaptor, then make sure you get the updated version with the adjustable arm to fit any sized mic. There are also less expensive adaptors that fit in the camera's shoe. Consider this option if you have the shoe available. If you have a light in the shoe of your camera like I do, then this is the way to go.
