What Readers are Saying about Doug Klostermann's Previous dSLR Guides:

Brilliant - just what I was looking for! A manual that was exciting, clear to follow, had examples and was used by a professional who gave just the right amount of technical info with explanations of why you use those settings, when to use those settings and so on...all properly explained. Doug's book is a joy to follow, well thought through and well written. The camera company should be employing Doug to write their cameras manuals!
-Robert D.

A Pro Right There with You - If you want to get the camera up and running with the feeling of a pro right there with you then I would strongly recommend it. He walks you through setting the camera up and gives you his reasoning for the settings. He leaves the door open to change them based on your level of experience. After the basic settings tour Doug then gets down to the heart of this great camera: the custom settings and focus system. His explanation is first class and he explains how various custom settings are related to each other. The focus system on this camera is top drawer and Doug does a fine job explaining what can be a very intimidating area of this camera. All in all a great read.  Camera in one hand and reader in the other and dig in.
-Tim S.

A Must-Have Accessory - What a great addition to my bag. This is a well written, full body of work that explains, in plain English, how to get the most out my new camera. Doug provides the knowledge and experience to bring you to the next level. I look forward to learning more every time I open the book.
-Steven

It's the first guide I've read which has taken me through all the settings in an understandable way. I now feel that I have control over the camera.
-Peter S.

Really Focuses on the "Why"
- I found the (camera's) manual good for understanding how to set things up but not much on the why - this book really focuses on the "why."
-Benoit A.

This manual is a clearly written,
concise and useful explanation of the rationale for the seemingly infinite and often confusing settings options.
-W.L.S.

It's clear, concise and gets to the heart of the camera's multiple and often confusing options. Very highly recommended - for experienced user and beginner alike.
-G.S.A.

If you've purchased the 5D Mark iii, the chances are you already have some familiarity with camera concepts and basic functionality. Either that, or you have way too much money to spend and a propensity to jump into the deep end of the pool. Even so, and in either case, do yourself a favor and get this book. Klostermann does a superb job of first giving you an easily comprehensible view of each function from 500 feet, and then delves down just enough to give you what you need to get going. This contrasts with the User's Manual which is, as usual, impenetrable. Hemingway once said that the trick to writing a novel was "knowing what to leave out", and the same is true of an "overview" camera primer. The author could have gone into much greater detail, but it would then have become a different and less valuable book.

Here's my suggestion: With camera in hand, sit down and go through Klostermann's explanations, one by one, from start to finish, fiddling with your camera as you go along. Then go out and take some pictures. Try things. You will find, over and over, that you can't quite figure out how to do something, but you know it can be done--because you read about it in Klostermann's book. You know it sounded easy, but you... just... can't... quite... remember.

Now go through the book a second time, start to finish. It doesn't take that long. By the time you're done that second time, you'll start to be taking real control over the things that, after all, you paid all that money for.

In fact, now you'll actually be able to get something out of the manual, other than a headache.

I have the Kindle version, which I really like--but not on a Kindle. I use the Kindle App on my Samsung 10.

I bought this book yesterday in anticipation of my new 5d Mark III which arrives on Wednesday. I worried that I might be buying a superficial ebook rushed to "print" to take advantage of the fact that there are no other books available.
.
I was pleasantly surprised. Easy to read. Easy to follow. Most important, unlike the Canon manual, when the author goes through the features of the camera he suggests settings choices with good explanations for his choices. He also does a very nice job explaining the complicated focus system for this new camera. Lots of substance to this ebook.

Since writing this review, I received the camera. I am very thankful I ordered this book. It was detailed and very useful in setting up the camera and understanding its features.

After reading through the Canon Owners Instruction Manual a number of times, I read the Canon 5D Mark III Experience. It is a very good accompanying book, as it provides a deeper look at most of the functions and features of the camera, and some useful recommendations on how to best set certain functions/features. The book also discusses photography principles and how to apply them when shooting with the Canon 5D Mark III. Photographs are used to illustrate how certain features/settings work. I think it is definately worth the money. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it had gone into to more depth on video, but the title clearly states the book is about Still Photography.

I loved this book. I read it during my vacation on my iPad without having my camera around. It didn't bore me for one second. I highlighted the important paragraphs in one color and did the same thing for the proposed settings... But in another color. This way, after coming back home, I browsed through the book again to adjust all my camera settings just looking for the one specific color highlighted in the text. It worked wonderfully well and I must say the proposed settings are really a great way to get started. This book is so much better than Canon's own manual which doesn't give you any examples. I wish books like this would exist for many other items.
Thanks Douglas for having this book published so soon after release of the Mark III.
Best regards
Paul

Doug Klosterman did an absolutely terrific job with this book about the Canon 5D Mk III. He not only tells you how to use each of the camera's features, but more importantly, why you would want to use each of the features. I purchased the book not long after getting my 5D. At that point I had dutifully read through the Canon manual, which certainly did tell me how to use the camera's features, but gave me no clue as to why I'd want to use any of them. Doug's book was a godsend, giving me the why for each of the camera's features. After finishing the book the first time, I felt like I had a good understanding of the 5D, but I continually go back to refresh my knowledge of features I don't use as often. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with a Canon 5D Mk III.

This is an extremely helpful guide to the Canon 5D3 camera and complements Canon's own guide very well with better descriptions and recommendations for many features, especially for the Auto-focus capabilities, custom menus, navigation of the software, camera buttons and the Auto ISO feature. As a professional changing over from the Nikon D-700 and previous Nikon systems, it helped me to understand the features of the camera better, know where to tweak things for my own shooting style and ultimately be able to use the camera more effectively than would have been otherwise possible. My advice is to buy it right away and use it alongside the Canon Manual.
