5.0 out of 5 stars Precise, flexible and quick
I chose Canon for its solid reputation, but this F20 printer-copier-scanner has more going for it than I ever expected. I'm using it with Windows 98. The printing and copying are fast, and the reproduction quality is excellent, even in draft mode.

Scanning of documents or photos includes a preview feature with zoom, allowing you to see what the output will look like...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor feeding; lots of ink
It prints fast once the paper feeds, but it rarely feeds correctly the first time. End result is that it doesn't start printing until 10 seconds after I get started. It also flys through the ink. Black cart is good for only 100 pages or so.

I was utterly disappointed.

I chose Canon for its solid reputation, but this F20 printer-copier-scanner has more going for it than I ever expected. I'm using it with Windows 98. The printing and copying are fast, and the reproduction quality is excellent, even in draft mode.

Scanning of documents or photos includes a preview feature with zoom, allowing you to see what the output will look like. And while being previewed, the photo or document can be cropped, resized, rotated and rescaled. A soft-focused photo image can be sharpened, and I can even adjust the color tones, contrast and brightness. The resulting color output was better than in the photos I scanned.

The OCR software on the installation CD works perfectly. And because the F20 is a flatbed copier, I can scan pages of bound books into the computer, then edit and save them as Word documents, which is saving me a huge amount of time and expense.

The setup sheet made installation extremely easy and problem-free. And the other documentation - the basic manual and the online software guide - are clearly written and well designed, so the machine's various functions are easy to learn. (And there are a LOT of functions.)

Altogether a top shelf piece of equipment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy it now, you would not regret., April 6, 2003

This printer is just flying on WinXP 512Ram. Scanning is almost professional. Printing and coping is fast and simple.
On the minus side, it uses a lot of ink. All taken into account there is no saving in ink comparing to HP or Epson printer's ink usage.
With all ot Multipass F20 minuses and pluses, I believe, it is the best multi-functioning devise in its price range. I also hate myself for overpaying 60 bucks, by not waiting couple of month until price finally came down.

After having several problems with my epson printer I read the reviews here and decided to try my first canon. Its great! Nice features in a low cost multifunction printer. Amazon has the best price I could find on it also. BEWARE! This printer software would not work with my Norton Firewall on my pc. I called canon tech support and they were very helpfull trying to help me even though I pretty much knew it was a firewall issue. Couldnt get it to work. I uninstalled Norton and installed McAfee firewall and no problems whatsoever. Just a word of caution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great home multifunction, March 10, 2003

Easy set up, great quality from photo prints (rich colors), b/w printing, scanning, copying. This replaced a Lexmark multifunction which I had lots of problems with and even more problems with Lexmark support. This machine is great for it's small size and so far ( had for 5 months ) have had no problems at all. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannon Multipass F20 Printer, March 28, 2003

Very clear instructions for set-up and use. Machine performs flawlessly. For home use, an excellent value for its cost.
The styling is modern, but yet conservative. I highly recommend this unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but no linux support, May 12, 2004
This review is from: Canon MultiPass F20 Multifunction (Personal Computers)
I've owned this for over a year and it's been my main printer/copier for a small business. I usually use it in draft mode as it is very fast (maybe 10ppm?) and the quality is good enough most of the time. Regular mode is too slow for my patience, maybe 2-3 ppm.

I've been very pleased. The cartridges are really cheap and it has been completely reliable. It doesn't take up much desk room and it is overall just a "neat" shape. There is a very nice feature where it allows you to see exactly what is going to the printer before sending it (a more "true" preview than what the text processing tools provide.) I always have this on so I don't print extra blank pages at the end, etc. Another neat thing is doing 2-up or 4-up printouts if I want to condense a boring document with large text size.

I'm thinking of buying a second for home. My only hesitation is that it won't run under RedHat Linux. My Linux box won't even boot if it sees the Canon on the USB port.

4.0 out of 5 stars I' ve printed Retail Grade DVD covers, but burned out head, April 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon MultiPass F20 Multifunction (Personal Computers)
I bought this printer new last October I was really astounded at the Retail grade DVD covers it produced, I printed about 1,800 covers before a Canon tech told me (by special free toll free number) the printing head was burnt out, but that they would send me a new one to replace old one since I had signed up when I first bought the printer. I am disabled and Canon took my word and is sending the part rather than me having a difficult time of getting someone to to take it to a authorized repair shop. Nice to know that a company as big as Canon still
believes a customers disabled and acts accordingly. I would buy another printer/scanner again because they know and believe that I am disabled and need special help. I would have given it 5 stars but this printer eats a lot of ink with very small ink holding cartridges of 9 ml(B) 1.5ml(color), with 30 ml to equal 1 *ounce*.

Windows XP platform - small footprint - easy setup with no glitches - all operations perform smoothly with quality output. Cannot attest to quality photo production, but for my uses this is an excellent piece of equipment at a smart price.

2.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED, October 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon MultiPass F20 Multifunction (Personal Computers)
I BOUGHT THIS PRINTER AFTER A LOT OF RESEARCH AND WAS DISAPPOINTED. THE BLACK PRINT QUALITY IS TERRIBLE. IT LOOKS SMUDGY, LIKE SPLATTERED PAINT. FED EX WAS UNABLE TO SCAN THE BARCODES ON THE INTERNET SHIP LABELS I CREATED ONLINE AND PRINTED WITH THE F20. MY OLD CANON PRINTER THAT I BOUGHT BACK IN 1997 HAD MUCH HIGHER QUALITY BLACK PRINT. I JUST WISH SOMEONE HAD WARNED ME ABOUT THIS. I CHOSE THIS PRINTER BECAUSE IT HAD THE FEATURES I NEEDED FOR A REASONABLE PRICE. I HAD A REGULAR CANON PRINTER BEFORE, AND AFTER READING ABOUT HP'S PAPER JAMS AND EPSON'S COMPATIBILITY PROBLEM WITH AOL EMAIL, I DECIDED TO STICK TO THE BRAND I KNEW. I CONTACTED TECH SUPPORT AFTER SEVERAL PRINT TESTS & CLEANING CYCLES, THEY REFERRED ME TO A LOCAL AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. THE SERVICE CENTER REPLACED THE PRINTHEAD. THE BLACK PRINT LOOKS A LITTLE BETTER, BUT IS STILL SMUDGY. THE ONLY WAY TO GET A CLEAR PRINT IS TO CHOOSE THE HIGH RESOLUTION PAPER SETTING, WHICH TAKES MORE TIME TO PRINT AND USES UP MORE INK. EVEN THE HIGH QUALITY PRINT SETTING IS A LITTLE SMUDGY, AND ALSO TAKES UP MORE TIME AND INK. ANOTHER THING TO CONSIDER IS THAT THE PRINTER HAS A LOUD CLICKING NOISE. IT REMINDS ME OF THE SOUND MY CAR'S CD PLAYER MAKES WHEN I TRY TO EJECT A CD THAT IS STUCK. THE CANON TECH REP SAID THIS CLICKING NOISE IS NORMAL. ALSO, I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN THAT THE PRINTER DOES NOT HAVE A SETTING UNDER PAPER TYPE FOR CARDSTOCK PAPER, AS I OFTEN MAKE MY OWN GREETING CARDS.
