Canon PIXMA CLI-8Bk Black Ink Tank

I have a Canon Photo Printer which takes six CLI-8 Canon Ink Cartridges. The cost of each individual ink cartridge ranges from around $12.50-15 (on Amazon) to 18.99 in Staples. So no matter how you buy the genuine Canon Ink Cartridges keeping yourself ready to print photos is expensive.

You can get a better per cartridge of you buy them in Canon CLI-8 4-Color Multipack Ink Tanks. In that case each individual cartridge is a little less expensive. Canon package CL-8C (Cyan), CL-8M (Magenta), CL-8Y (Yellow), and CL-8BK (Black) as a pack ($40-44 on Amazon). When cartridges are sold in packs you might think those colors are used at similar rates... but that is not so.

I have kept track of the usage of the cartridges over a long period of time and would like to share these results with you.

Number of cartridges used

CL-8M Magenta = 5

CL-8Y Yellow = 8

CL-8B Black = 6

CL-8PC Photo Cyan = 6

CL-8PM Photo Magenta = 8

CL-8C Cyan = 4


My usage shows that yellow is used the most, followed closely by Photo Magenta, followed next by Black and Photo Cyan, and trailed by Cyan and Magenta. Note that I have a laser printer that I used for text otherwise the usage of the Black Cartridge would have been a lot higher.

I buy most of my color photo ink on-line from Amazon. However now that Staples began (again) accepting CL-8 cartridges for Staples Rewards in their recycling empty cartridges program, I wanted to analyze my usage to see which cartridges I should buy at Staples using my Staples Rewards.

My original thought was to buy Canon CLI-8PC Photo Cyan Ink Tank and Canon CLI-8PM Photo Magenta Ink Tank since they don't come in a pack. But given the usage chart above, it is clear that I should buy extra Yellow and Photo Magenta.

While pricey (and Amazon is the least expensive place to purchase that I have found) this ink is excellent and almost worth the extra money. I would not trust generic ink tanks. My last machine got ruined because of cheap ink- didn't turn out to be a bargain at all. This Canon ink is right for the machine, and picture prints look just beautiful!!!

These tanks work well of course and the Canon printer prints near photo quality images. No complains about the system except for the cost of the 6 tanks needed to run the process; that is why 4/5 stars. Right now another difficulty lies in finding 1 vendor who carries all 6 colors; Amazon does not directly so I had to use 3 different vendors to get all 6 tanks. I'm sure that will change in time.

Although this Canon PIXMA CLI-8Bk Black Ink Tank was advertised as "New", it arrived without a Canon box. Since I do not need to use the tank right now, I am concerned that it may not be as advertised and may not work properly when I do need it in the future. Please explain why the tank was not in a sealed box.

While you will see a photo of the Canon box package on the product page, this ink does not come in the Canon box. I do not see anywhere on the product page [...] that these would arrive without a Canon box. If it was clearly stated on this page that you would just receive the cartridges, that would be okay, but it is not. Not sure how this ink will work or if this are refillable inktanks, but I am disappointed about how misleading this company is and won't order from them again.

I love saving money by buying these from Amazon. Great product for some great prices. I buy all of my ink from Amazon. It just makes good sense.

I really like my Cannon printer. Though there are several cartridges they really seem to last a long time and each cartridge is around $14.00, better than $30 - $40 a cartridge!

The product was Genuine Canon as it stated. The genuine canon products seem to work the best in my canon printer.

Works perfect, used after market refills in the past. No substitute for OEM ink. Fits perfectly no leaks, no streaks just a perfect print.

Pretty straightforward review. It works great in the Canon Pixma MP610 printer it's installed in. Print quality of ink is top notch (as should be for OEM) and lasts quite a while in the unit. Great price on Amazon.
