3.0 out of 5 stars NO USB CABLE
There is no printer, USB in this case, cable included...how stupid is that!!!??? Like those idiots who sell washer and dryers and don't include the hook-ups. So, can't even use it yet, because there is no cable. Make sure to buy one, and tell Canon how dumb they are!

4.0 out of 5 stars Which Canon Multifunction is right for you?, April 19, 2005

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
First off, if you're in the market for a printer, you can't go wrong with a Canon. Canon printers consistently beat out the competition in independent tests for print quality. Their items are elegant, well designed, and most importantly, ink is affordable.

We all know the razor and blade scheme: sell the printer below cost and make it up with pricey cartridges. Canon, however, saves you a lot of money by including the print head with the printer and not on each cartridge. Because of this, genuine Canon cartridges can be had for around $12, while 3rd party cartridges, which many claim work just as well, can be found for as low as $2.

If you've already decided on a Canon multifunction, lets see which model is right for you. Canon's current market list is as follows:

MP130 - New model, and the most affordable yet.

Copy/Print/Scan

18ppm black, 13ppm color

2 ink tanks

No auto sheet feeder!

Card slots

MP390 - Has a fax, About half the cost of the MP7xx's.

Copy/Print/SCan/Fax

18ppm black, 12 ppm color

2 ink tanks

card slots

MP750 - Older model - exactly the same as mp780 but no fax.

Copy/Print/Scan

25ppm black, 17 ppm color

5 ink tanks

Built in Duplexing

MP760 - New Model - geared towards photo enthusiasts.

Copy/Print/Scan + Special Photo Features

25ppm black, 17 ppm color

5 ink tanks

No auto sheet feeder!

Built in Duplexing

*Unique photo features:

2.5 inch lcd screen

Built in film adapter for 35mm slides or negatives

can print directly from negatives

Card slots

MP780 - Does it all except for the mp760 photo features.

Copy/Print/Scan/Fax

25ppm black, 17 ppm color

5 ink tanks

Built in Duplexing

Now, let's look more closely at some key differences between these models:

*Fax: The first thing you should do is decide if you need a fax or not. If you do, you should choose between the MP780 or the MP390. If not, don't rule those two out just yet, they may have have other features you can't live without.

*Note: There is NO auto fax/telephone switching on these models if you wish to use the same line for faxes and voice calls.

*Number of ink tanks: The next important thing you should look at is whether you want to be able to replace each color individually or not. The MP750, MP760 and MP780 all have 5 individual ink tanks (photo black, black, cyan, yellow, magenta), while the MP130 and MP390 have only 2 (black and tricolor). The cost of each cartridge is about the same, but you will waste some leftover ink by throwing out the MP130 or MP390's color cartridge when just one color runs out.

*Photo printing: If you're planning on printing a lot of photos, you should probably go with an mp7xx. These have a superior print head, as well as the 5 separate ink tanks. The MP760 is especially noteable with all the features Canon has added specifically for photos. These come at a price however, as the MP760 does not share the auto sheet feeder of its MP750 and MP780 cousins, or the fax of the 780.

*However - If you plan on printing directly from memory cards, beware! The mp750 and mp780 do not have card slots! The 2 cheaper models and the mp760 do.

*Auto sheet feeder: The mp130 and mp760 do NOT have an auto sheet feeder. All 3 of the others do. An auto sheet feeder is very useful when doing a lot of scanning or faxing.

*Duplexing: The mp7xx models each have built in duplexing.

*Size: The mp7xx models weigh around 30 pounds and are quite big. The MP390 is a smaller, and weighs 18 pounds. The mp130 has a tiny footprint for a multifunction printer, and weighs 14 pounds.

Some features that all of Canon's current MFPs share:

*Copying: Each of these models has a copy function, and all have the same resolution (600x600 black, 1200x1200 color).

*USB 2.0 connection

*Pictbridge direct photo printing support

*All 5 models are great looking and will complement almost any decor.

My recommendations:

If you want a great price on an excellent printer and don't need a fax: MP130

If price is an issue but you still need a fax: MP390

If you can afford an MP700 series and don't need a fax, card slots, or the MP760's photo features: MP750

If you need its exclusive photo features (but no fax or auto sheet feeder): MP760

If you can afford an MP700 series and need a fax (but no card slots and none of the MP760s photo features): MP780

5.0 out of 5 stars DID SOME RESEARCH...BEST BRAND/ PRINTER!, April 28, 2005
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
After hours of research on every brand of printer (Epson, HP, Lexmark, etc.) Canon was the overwhelming and best choice. After deciding on Canon, I purchased the PIXMA MP 750. This being the newest at the time, early 2005, was also the printer with all the features I needed.
I almost got swayed into an Epson after finding out how bad HP reliability is but found out that Epson has some problems with their Print Heads going bad and/ or drying up. This is an expensive problem from what I understand since not only the print heads are expensive but only a "trained pro" can replace it. On Canon printers, anyone can change the print heads, although I have not heard of many problems with Canon print heads. Also, on any printer, Always...Always turn the printer OFF when not in use. Do not allow ink jet printers to stay in an on or standby mode for long as this will allow any printhead on any brand printer to dry up. If the printer is off, the printhead is automatically covered to extend the life of it.

To address an issue that it took me a while to find out...WHY IS THE 5th INK A 2nd BLACK INK? The second black is a black ink to enhance photos mainly. It is a PIGMENT black ink (ie. Epson DURABrite inks) that Canon says increases the quality of the other four Dye-based inks. If you are thinking that you have seen many other printers with the option to have 6 inks for photos...dont worry, this printer, with its ultra-fine printhead, does the greatest job of any HP, Epson, or other 6 ink printers!

Also, many people complain about USB caables not being included with MOST printer brands...COME ON, think about it, the cost of a $15 USB cable (average cable cost) will have to be passed on to us in the price of the printer. With this fact in mind, if USB cables were always included, next time I buy a printer I would be paying for a second USB cable which I do not need...one would be unused. TIP - I got a top quality, 10 ft USB printer cable on Ebay for under $4 with shipping included. Just shop around first...you are already online reading this review!

THE GOOD...

Great looks,
THE best paper handling system out there...no jams,
Ease of use,
Two paper feeds,
Photo print quality is the best...even with only 5 inks,
The Finest/newest print head in the price range ($200-250),
Flat bed and sheet fed batch scanning,
Individual ink tanks,
Good software bundle

THE BAD...

None after 2 months of use!!!
Update...no bad after 5 months of use!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well designed multifunction, March 23, 2005

I had originally planned to buy the Canon MP130 but chose this model instead since the launch of the MP130 in the US was delayed. In retrospect I am glad that I went with the MP750 despite the increased price and size. Print quality is generally excellent, especially when printing on treated inkjet paper. I keep regular cheap paper in the bottom cassette, and keep the nice stuff in the automatic sheet feeder, which makes it easy to switch. The printer is also very quiet compared to other inkjets I've owned, and does not have as long and obnoxious a startup/warmup sequence either. I like the fact that I can replace each color ink cartridge individually. The scanning and copier functions are quick and produce high quality output. I frequently use the double-sided printing option, which ends up saving a lot of paper.

The only minor complaint I have at this point is that the unit emits a very slight hiss whenever it is plugged in (even if not turned on) -- I believe this is from the flourescent tube in the scanner. Then again, I have very sensitive hearing and it doesn't bother my wife at all. The hiss is generally most pronounced right after the scanner is used, and then fades away (but never disappears completely). Still, something to consider if you're thinking of putting this in the bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing for scanning, copying, and printing photos, July 9, 2005
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
After much research, I bought the MP750 for my dorm room. Although it is a monster in size, it performs each of its functions incredibly well. Using high-quality photo paper, I have printed better photos than I've gotten from photo labs. It scans very well and is pretty fast once it warms up. The MP750's copies are remarkable, in both black-and-white and color. The print dialog box allows for the user to choose from all sorts of photo effects--I recently printed a photo in vivid color without adjusting the actual photo--and other print settings. The 2-sided printing and copying and the automatic document feeder are especially useful for long documents. Even the software that came with the printer is great: programs that allow users to easily print webpages and scan documents to editable text, among other things. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and highly recommend the Canon MP750 to anyone seriously considering a multi-function.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than HP!, July 14, 2005

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
This is my first Canon printer. Previously I owned several HP InkJet printers and one HP PhotoSmart printer. The Canon is leaps and bounds above HP. The main reason is that I have not had one single issue with it. It's smooth, quiet, prints beautifully. I like the separate ink tanks. I'm on here to buy a black replacement, which the printer kindly let me know was low. With HP, I always had issues with my PC not recognizing the printer and having to unconnect it, reconnect it, etc. I've owned this printer for about 6 months and am very pleased so far. It was a great deal at the $219.99 I paid. The copier and scanner work fantastically, too. The quality of the color copies is amazing -- especially considering how fast it copies and prints. It's so easy to be able to make a quick color copy of something rather than having to scan it in, then print it out. This printer is a great addition to any home office.

4.0 out of 5 stars As of 6/19/05, I've had mine about a week..., June 19, 2005

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
...and so far, I have been very pleased. Although I am not so pleased that the price has dropped $9 below what I paid for it..but, it will be a good deal for someome else. Canon does have more expensive, and newer model printers than the MP750, with more bells and whistles..but hey, for $120 bucks...I don't think you can beat this machine. It does all of the basic stuff well...the copies, the scanning, and the printing..but where it really seems to shine...is photo printing. I have been amazing some of my friends recently with the rich quality of some simple 4x6 printouts of shots I've taken with a 4-megapixel Nikon..and with images that I have downloaded off the Internet. In both cases, (on glossy paper) the color and detail is outstanding. Everyone thought I had the photos 'developed' somewhere.....yeah, how about my bedroom!!!!

Ease of operation....replacement inks are not expensive, and $120 bucks......go on......GO FOR IT!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars So quiet!, July 9, 2005

We've had this printer for over a month now and I've printed, scanned, copied with no problems and/or issues. I can't believe how quiet the printer is which is a good thing since I do a lot of late night project printing in the middle of the night when my kids are asleep.

I've used the direct usb connection to my Canon camera and it was simple to print out 4X6's.

Still haven't had to replace any ink cartridges even after printing out over 4 dozen 4X6 pictures and a couple of 8X10's.

For the price, it's a fantastic buy and I highly recommend it!

As an additional note, I've used HP, Canon, and Epson glossy photo paper and the Canon paper sample you receive with purchase had the best looking prints.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great All-In one except for wireless print server cap, September 23, 2005

This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
Even thought this printer doesn't have wireless printer server capabilites.. I found a solution.. Netgear's WGPS606! It's one of the few PS that works with this printer even though it is not listed on their "official support page". However it may be difficult to get Netgear's product and your system configured due to poor documentation and support on Netgear's behalf. IF you configured your router for MAC filtering.. MAKE sure you enter both the wired and wireless MAC address for the Netgear router. It's not documented well, but that is how you can get PC's with wireless cards to print to your Canon MP780 via the Netgear Print Server. Enjoy!

Pixma was easiest printer ever purchased, to set up and get started. All functions are easy to understand, easy to perform. PDF manual easy to use also. Did have to purchase the 2.0 port cable at Radio Shack $29.99. Quality of printing is excellent, both documents & photos. Beyond my expectations and exceeds performance of previous Canon Multipass C755. Faxing, scanning ability is awesome. Flatbed & ADF all works as required. Printer well worth the money paid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MP750 All-in-One Photo Printer (Office Product)
The printer/scanner/copier is excellent. I love the separate ink tanks for each color because it's much cheaper and far more economical to replace the colors that you use the most instead of having to buy an expensive color replacement cartridge when you're only out of one color. The scanning software and capabilities for this multifunction machine is awesome! You can scan multiple picures/items at once as long as you have a certain amount of space between the pictures/items and it scans them into separate files. It's fantastic! I am so glad I decided to buy this Canon multifunction printer over the other ones available. This is my second Canon printer, both have had the separate ink tanks, and the quality of prints, scans, and copies are superior to any other printer or scanner I have ever had or used.
