Good office machine, but photos are just OK,
By
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MX7600 Office All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
Bottom Line: This is a good multifunction inkjet. All functions range from adequate to very good.
Pros: The scanner is very good, with an auto feeder, and scan quality is good for both documents and photos. The print speed and quality is good. Having 2 paper sources (bottom plain paper cassette, rear feeder) is a time saver. The auto-duplex printing is very handy. Fax quality is good. Auto feeding for faxes is nice, but not something I will use that much. Builtin networking, so I don't need to have a PC continuously powered up when the family laptops want to print. Photo prints have good detail and shading. Printing directly from various memory cards and cameras is easy. Cons: Photo prints colors need some tweaking. It's all a bit bright with a tendency toward a very slight pink cast. Admittedly, I have not done that many color photos as yet. Tones and shades are not as accurate as a printer with more colors. This one has 6 ink tanks, but 2 of them are shades of black, so printing must be done with 4 colors. This printer is adequate for amateur snaps, but won't replace a dedicated photo printer. No scanning of film or negatives. Printer is large but that's a given with this many functions.

I am a very big fan of Canon printers and All-In Ones. I previously have had the MP780 and the MP830 of which I had no complaints and would have rated 4-5 stars. My complaints with the 7600 are:
1) slow to print first page 2) cannot use regular paper from the rear paper loader (only the cassette). 3) a bit noisy before and after printing. 4) ink only available online If I had to buy again, I would go with the MP850.

MX 7600 extremely disappointing, noisy and no ink,

The Canon MX 7600 is very noisy. It annoyingly clicks and clacks for minutes after it is done printing, and while speed of page printing itself is OK, the printer waits for up to a minute to start printing many times. I've had the machine for 2 weeks and already it has started jamming paper every 15 sheets or so. And the ink required by the MX 7600 is not sold over the counter by any store in New York City. No stores even list the ink, so you have to buy it online. And Canon's support dept. was absolutely no help whatsoever with coming up with a solution. How can Canon launch a product and not provide the ink anywhere!
I replaced a Canon MP 780 which I liked, after it wore out, with this MX 7600 and am extremely disappointed and will now try another company's products. One last inconvenience to note, unlike the Canon MP780, paper for normal use in the MX7600 cannot be loaded from the rear, but must be loaded from the front cassette which holds less paper.

Canon Pixma MX7600 Office All-In-One Printer (2437B002)
We have run it through its paces for 8 months now in a small office. We generally only use the MX7600 for color jobs and use our cheap-to-operate older laser copier/network-printer for black and white text business docs and forms. (We do not use the fax or scanner functions on the MX7600 as we have a separate dedicated high-speed document scanner and use an Internet fax service so I will not comment on those fuctions.) We wanted a color printer/copier that was full featured and high quality. But we only have low volume print needs because we run a "less-paper" office, usually opting for electronic document delivery and storage. This unit fit the bill--it offers automatic full duplex for copying and printing which saves time, paper, postage, storage; the network setup instructions were detailed and clear; it is Energy Star rated; and it works on our PCs and Mac. It has separate ink tanks which save us money and resources. And last but not least, the output looks at least as good as color laser quality. The color copy mode could use some work--color business documents come out too light unless you manually dial up the darkness setting. The MX7600's unique "clear ink" paper treatment "fixes" the color and black inks to the paper so it does not smear or run. The paper does take longer to dry than expected--I assume because of the clear ink treatment. The unit does a little dance to shake up the ink tanks at least once a day. Otherwise it is pretty quiet. It seems to go through the inks fairly quickly but I guess that is par for inkjets--I just hoped it would not be the case for a model that you pay up front so much for. Even though the unit has been out for 8 months, we still cannot find the inks in stores (only online) but we assume that issue will be resolved soon. Overall, it is a solid performer--printing excellent quality duplex color business documents over our network, an occasional photo, and as a back-up to our old B&W laser copier/printer. UPDATE: Have used this unit for nearly 2 years now in our office with three people. It has been stable and rarely if ever jams. The print quality and operation Has been very good. My biggest gripe is that Canon has designed the ink cartridges to need replacement after what seems like little use. And we're not printing photos or anything like that, just business documents and reports. Also, you still cannot readily find the inks at local office supply big-box stores.

Mostly works with the Mac OS X 10.5,

I have this printer networked with my Windows PC and my new iMac. I haven't yet figured out how to get the scanner to work with the iMac.
It was pretty much plug and play for the PC. The installation instructions for the Mac 10.5 are nowhere near actual installation instructions--even the latest instructions from the website aren't correct. Printer is great, scanner is very good, networked capability is reliable, just gotta figure out how to get the scanner to work with the lastest Mac OS.

I offer this review to comment on the general home office functionality of the printer. I use this printer as a networked printer at home to service both PCs and Macs. I hooked it up to my wireless network and was able to very easily set it up as a networked printer within minutes. With previous printers, I was never able to do this and had to resort to using USB cards to move files back and forth to be printed from remote computers to the one computer in the house that was hooked up to the printer, which was a real drag.
As you can imagine, I was elated when I was able to set up the printer as a networked printer without any hassle. We typically use the printer to print out homework assignments, presentations, work related items, and other items typically generated in MS Word and MS Excel. My wife has PrintMaster Gold and she uses the printer to print out cards and pictures occasionally, and the printer does an excellent job. We also use it for making copies and for scanning. The software that comes with the printer for scanning is really easy to use. I was able to show my family how to use the scanner and copier in just a couple of minutes, which was great. I've had the printer for about 3 months and so far I've only had to change out the black cartridge. I will mention that I couldn't find cartridges for this printer at Office Depot or at any retail stores where I've purchased cartridges in the past. I had to order them online, and they were kind of hard to find. I was able to find and order them, so all is well. I just did a Google search for the names of the cartridges and found a couple of outlets from which to purchase them right away. We use the printer about 5-10 times per week during normal school time, so we are not "heavy users" of this printer. This is a very good printer for a family. It turns off automatically to save power and turns back on quickly when you're ready to print, so it is very energy efficient. Great printer - I highly recommend it.

Nice printer--but ink is a problme,

Nice enough for home use but way too slow for multiple users. An attractive printer visually. The duplex printing, color printing features are great and love that it works well with the Apple Airport system we use. However, very upset that when the cartridge runs out of ink the printer stops working completely--the cyan ran out but it refused to print a black ink document. Won't even scan a document--it completely stops working. The ink ran out without warning to me (other users that were using the printer an may have gotten one but don't know). Only way to get the ink is online--VERY UPSET about this. Other than this it is a decent printer--another peeve is that the bottom cartridge only holds a scant amount of paper for regular office use, so you need to refeed paper frequently if multiple users are using the printer for large projects. Again, other than the ink situation, this probably would be a wonderful printer for home/family use. In an office of four people spread out in different areas, it has been problematic. All this is minor, but the ink situation sealed the deal that this was not the right printer for us and we will need to sell it off and find another.

MX7600,

this will be short and sweet. I needed a multifunction printer for my new business and had many, many docs to print, scan, copy, fax, etc, etc. The unit is intuitive and easy to use and i have just now changed the cartriges for the first time after almost 6 months of daily printing. I have not used the printer for pictures and have no opinion on that. For a small business printer (low volume ~<30 pages a day to print), this printer has more than met my expectations. Would recommend it.

Great network scan & archive sytem w/ beautiful print quality,
This review is from: Canon PIXMA MX7600 Office All-in-One Printer (Office Product)
Easy setup and functions worked as advertised, which is saying something (especially given any HP experiences).
Purchased the printer for creating plain paper marketing materials on non-glossy 100% recycled paper. Have not purchased the paper yet. 1. Print quality on plain paper is beautiful - though not as smudge resistant as I would like. Reviews say smudge resistance is very high on photo paper. 2. Network scan to pc using only the printer console actually works - both on Vista and XP. If you want this function, don't even be tempted by cheaper HP printers - even a $1000 HP laser AIO could only scan to 1 PC in our office (and they're all the same type!). Recommendations: For searchable archiving, I would recommend an OCR software that will monitor the folder that the scanner will place files in. Upon scanning, the OCR software will create a searchable PDF. At $50-100 for this type of software, the combined archiving system costing max $400 (including MX7600) would rival systems costing thousands. *Knocked 1 star off for smudgability...of course that's nitpicking but 5 stars implies a perfect product. Note: Would be great to see this in an A3 (11"x17" to 13"x19") version. That would be a 6 star product!

Easy to use,

I bought this printer based on experience with an earlier model, which was good, and frustration with my HP printer. This Canon model is very easy to use, makes crisp, clean copies, and the scanner and fax functions are also simple. It's nice for my home office. Like other reviewers, I agree that it is a little on the noisy side. My biggest con, though, is that I have been unable to find the ink at any local office supply stores and was forced to by online ... not a good discovery to make when the printer has just run out of black ink. Otherwise, I am very satisfied ... so far ... with this product.
