It works.

But what is up with a "portable printer" that comes with neither a battery nor a vehicle power supply in the box? And does it really need to cost this much?

An essential item for printing from your vehicle without the hassle of recharging batteries. This is a great product, that is a bit overpriced. The bottom line is that the Canon PU-100u is a great product choice if you don't want to carry an power inverter.
