Canon Photo Editor uses a frame interface and you work with the photo surrounded by the function toolbars. To begin working, you open a file of an existing photo image or use a TWAIN interface to get an image from a scanner or digital camera. You can also download images directly from PhotoIsland.com if you are a member. Once on screen, you can edit the image or work with it in a project, print it, or manage it by storing it in an album along with some background information about the image.
The range of editing tools is extensive for a program in this price range, with lots of selection tools, including a magic wand for selecting areas of similar color. There is also a very effective freehand selection tool. Unusual in a program of this type, selected areas can be converted to layers that can be used to mask or selectively include parts of an image. Layers can also have varying levels of transparency. Canon Photo Advanced also includes a wide array of basic painting and touch up tools and provides some very straightforward image filters for artistic effects such as melting, motion blur or sketch. With all these filters you get an instant image preview.
Among the programs image controls youll find the usual brightness, contrast, and color balance manipulation tools along with a moderately effective auto enhance tool that tries to automatically correct for contrast and color problems.
Canon Photo Advanced is much weaker in the area of projects, however, with, for example, a few frames and edges for images and a few calendars and greeting cards. There is one exception. A separate program called PhotoFantasy is included that allows you to drop a face from one image into literally hundreds of different backgrounds, such as astronauts or princes or sports stars. You can even build your own fantasy background images from other photos.
Canon Photo Advanced also includes a straightforward photo album manager and three other programs you can launch from Photo Advanced. Canon Photo Panoramas adds the ability to create panoramas by linking overlapping images together and Canon Photo Montages lets you build photo montages by using very small thumbnails of other photos to match areas of color in a particular photo. Canon Video 1.0, a rudimentary video editor, allows you to string together simple video clips. You can upgrade the latter to a more robust version directly from the CD for an additional $20.
All in all, Canon Photo Editor is a solid photo editing program, its one standout feature being PhotoFantasy. Even at its low $39.95, it wont unseat MGI PhotoSuite from the WinList .

Room for improvement,

This review is from: Canon Photo Advanced Edition 2.0 (CD-ROM)
I have tried other photo editing packages in this price range and like this about as well any. On the positive side, it is pretty easy to use and handles the basic tasks and then some. There is no manual to speak of, but the program is not too complicated. I like that it uses the jpeg format in native mode (unlike Adobe Photodeluxe which uses some oddball native format). I was amazed, though, that the window under which the program runs cannot be made full screen. It was like trading my 19" monitor for a 15". Another dissapointment was that it didn't allow viewing of all information text imbedded in the jpeg file. My Cannon Powershot S10 stores information about cammera settings in the jpeg. Canon Photo doesn't display this (although it leaves them intact for other programs that can). I would hope the next version fixes these problems.

Not a product for beginners!,

I bought this program after getting a digital camera and wanting to "play" with AND improve my images taken. I bought this program based on it's packaging. They make it sound great. However, upon getting it home, became frustrated very quickly. For someone with no experience, your totally on your own. I knew I would have to experiment and learn on my own, but there is no manual, the help menu's are, at best, minimal and offer no help, merely a description of what the icon does. Save your money and search, like I should have, for a program that is more user-friendly WITH a manual for learning!
