Product Description

Manufacturer Description

Even beginners can create phenomenal images with the amazing PowerShot A580. This impressive 8.0-megapixel digital camera has a 4x optical zoom and bright 2.5-inch LCD that make shooting simple and convenient. To give you superior quality images without having to worry about the details, there’s a full range of Canon’s highly advanced features at your service -- including a powerful DIGIC III image processor, enhanced Face Detection technology, a host of shooting modes including a new Easy Mode and more.

PowerShot PowerShot A580 Highlights

Feature-packed 8.0-megapixel digital camera with 4x optical zoom Picture the possibilities of this impressive digital camera. The 8.0-megapixel design lets you create images of breath-taking detail and radiant color that you can print, enlarge, crop or email to friends and family. The Canon 4x optical zoom gives you the power you need to get in close and capture special moments -- whether they’re happening across the room or across the schoolyard.

2.5-inch LCD screen The camera’s 2.5-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you’re shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This high-resolution screen offers a crisp, clear and bright picture. It also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light.

New Easy Mode simplifies operation Even if you’ve never picked up a camera before, with Canon’s new Easy Mode you can take inspiring, dramatic pictures that will impress everyone. Once you choose Easy Mode, the PowerShot A580 handles all the details automatically. It automatically sets every camera control including the flash to reduce blur and improve image quality. So you get pictures that are bright, clear and natural just by pushing a button. Best of all, you can relax and concentrate on what really counts -- your subject.

Selectable Shooting Modes With 16 Shooting Modes including 7 Special Scene Modes, you’re ready for whatever shot comes your way.

Enhanced Canon Face Detection Technology Canon's powerful Face Detection Technology delivers even better results with the new A580. The Face Detection Technology continues to recognize faces in a scene, and concentrate exposure (daylight or flash) and focus upon them. But the A580 adds more: Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets the A580 user highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's new Motion Detection Technology.

Red-eye Correction Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.

  • The new Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
  • The A580 can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
  • The user can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

High ISO The PowerShot A580 features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

DIGIC III Image Processor With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What’s more, DIGIC III enables Canon’s Face Detection Technology and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the Shutter Button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The entirely new Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from flash images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the A580's menu.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

Motion Detection Technology automatically reduces blur Life doesn’t stand still for picture-taking. That’s why Canon included its advanced Motion Detection Technology in the PowerShot A580. This sophisticated feature works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. Then it automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. So whether you’re shooting a bride walking down the aisle, a ballet recital or even a child’s soccer game, you can relax and shoot with confidence knowing you’ve got the picture you intended.

Uses AA batteries for convenience anywhere you go You don’t need to worry about running out or recharging of batteries. Since AA-size batteries can be purchased at any store, simply get new ones locally.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine camera, but also check out the A590 IS, March 10, 2008
By
This review is from: Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
These PowerShot "A" cameras are Canon's attempt to deliver the quality and features of its more expensive PowerShot "G" and PowerShot Pro "S" lines (such as full zoom lenses) at a budget price. The results are pretty good. (How do I know? Because I've actually gotten to use all of these cameras. I earn my living at Walt Disney World writing a travel guide, and nearly every day guests ask me to take photos of them with their own cameras, which most often are Canon PowerShots.)

Here's my opinion of the top-selling "A" series cameras:

7TH PLACE: Featuring Canon's acclaimed Digic III processor, the 2007-model A560 includes the company's face-detection metering system and a decent red-eye removal. It's a nice camera, but a better value is the new A470 (see below). $150 list.

6TH PLACE: The A570IS is the same camera as the A560 but with optical image stabilization and the ability to shoot manually. $200 list.

5TH PLACE: You can do a lot with the sweet little A630. It's a 2006 model, but has a flip-out LCD panel and lots of manual controls. The shots I've seen from this model look great. Keep your ISO under 800 and you won't get any noise. $350 list. (Canon offers a 2007 version of this camera that I haven't had much experience with yet, the A650 IS. It also lists for $350.)

4TH PLACE: The 2008-model A580 (the camera on this page) is a 2008 upgrade to the A560. The face detection system works a little better than the one on its predecessor, and the new model is slightly rounder and easier to grip. A fine performer and a great bargain. $150 list.

3RD PLACE: The fully-loaded A710 IS has all the toys, including a full-range zoom (35mm film equivalent of 35-210mm), adjustable flash power and optional second-curtain flash. This last feature means you can make the flash fire at the end of a long exposure, instead of the beginning, so moving subjects streak into focus instead of out. A 2007 model. $500 list.

2ND PLACE: The 2008 entry-level A470 is great for kids or anyone just looking for a good basic camera. But frankly, it's better than basic. It includes Canon's face detection technology and has a zoom lens, 14 shooting modes and the ability to set exposure compensation, ISO and white balance manually. Plus it looks great. Everyone with this little camera always seems to be having fun. $130 list.

1ST PLACE: The A590IS is the A580 (see 4th Place, above) with image stabilization and with the option of full manual controls. For an extra $30 those features are well worth it. I bought this model for myself. $180 list.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT CAMERA for the price!!, June 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I purchased this camera as a replacement to a canon A510. I really LOVE this new camera. They improved some features like increasing the size of the review screen and made some options a lot easier to use (like turning flash on/off, timeers in a better spot, deleting pic's). It takes GREAT pic's and is very lightweight and easy to use.

The ONLY DRAWBACK - the moved the SD card. Before it was in its own spot and it was very EASY to open and close. ON this model, they moved it with the batteries and to open that cover, you have to push a littler button, and push down at the same time and then slide the cover off. Doesn't sound that tough but it takes a lot more time to get that open and sometimes it takes a few tries to get it open.

That is why I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Other than that - I LOVE this camera!!! Get a lot of features for the price!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good camera for the price, March 7, 2008

This review is from: Canon PowerShot A580 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
I didn't really have a good experience with my Canon 35mm compact camera before, so I was pretty hesitated to order this one. But compare to my ancient Sony DSC P92 & Nikon coolpix 4300, this Canon A580 is the best for the price. It has all the features of a more expensive camera & so easy to use. Came with a software and AA battery. The only bad thing from this camera is whenever I set it into night mode the picture always turned out blurred. But other than that everything is good, just have to have an extra battery with you all the time.
I ordered this camera from Amazon & it arrived withing 3 days. The shipping was free & no sales tax even made it a better bargain.
