The Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide is clear, concise, well indexed and a high quality book. It supplements the myriad Canon Manuals in an easy to follow format. The color photos, high quality paper stock, and excellent easy to follow format are great and it includes useful information on basic photography as well. You can reference the well composed index to find answers that are hard to find in the Canon manual(s).

This book is about the little camera that could. The pages contain information that stretches out far beyond the Canon PowerShot manuals.
You will be amazed at what this little camera can do given the parameters set in this book. Features abound in the PowerShot camera series that you probably didn't know existed! Since buying this book, I have used it religiously and believe me, my photos have improved 90%. Most people think that the PowerShot cameras are just basically point and shoot. If that's what you want, that's what you get. However, this book can you from point and shoot to point and create. Word. Well written and easy to understand. By no means does this replace the Canon manuals but, by all means it helps the manuals make sense. If you don't own a PowerShot already, get one along with this book and discover one of the best kept secrets of digital photography!!!

and well written. Not just for tekkies. Explains all about the Canon Powershot cameras. You can't miss a thing whether you are a novice or an expert in photography. It is much better than the User Guides that Canon supplies with its equipment. Not only explains how to work your Powershot but also how to get the most out of it. It is a must have for all Canon users. The most informative 288 page book you can read, all in color.

My Canon owner's manual must have been written by complete digital-camera geeks who have drunk so many pixels, they can't even imagine how a beginner sees this little silver box, let alone explain the basic steps to take a picture with this little contraption. Thankfully, Michael Guncheon's Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide does explain what the functions and settings do. Although there is a section on Getting the Most Out of Your PowerShot Camera, which helps me think more strategically, I would benefit from even more basic 1-2-3-type-This-Is-What-You-Do-Each-Time instruction.
Guncheon also includes The Fundamentals of Photography, which I guess is good for beginner photographers, but I'm an experienced photographer who is a beginner with all things digital, and I would have preferred that 1-2-3 thought-process instruction I mentioned above. If you're looking for clear explanations and a well-rounded, helpful digital photography guide though, I can recommend this one. One added bonus is Guncheon's specific photography tips, such as for pets and people, sunrises and sunsets. His color photos, used as examples in the book, are stunning. Another bonus is the Downloading, Editing, and Outputting section, which I haven't gotten to yet, but thought I'd mention, because it looks very helpful.

I love this book because it explains the nuts and bolts of the Powershot series cameras. It has great explanations and sample photos to illustrate each of the techniques. I reference this book all the time and take pictures using the tips learned. This was a smart purchase. I highly recommend this book.

Leaves no questions unanswered,
By Paige "CE Quinn" (Hendersonville, NC USA) - See all my reviews

The Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide is amazingly complete. It narrows in on your particular camera. I took a 10-week beginning digital photography course, which was wonderful, but the book expanded on so many areas of interest and knowledge that the teacher only touched upon. Buy it...you will thoroughly use it.

A Canon Powershot for everyone! (and this book to go with it).,
By Photo Phanatic (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
This Field Guide describes the myriad PowerShots and their features and, more importantly, how to get better pictures using them. Among many PowerShots, the features and menus are quite similar and the author does a commendable job of covering them. It's a bit cumbersome early: A spreadsheet of which models had which features would ease skipping the parts our camera doesn't have, and more early pictures of the various menu screens and mode dials would help.
That said, once we know our camera features, the final 75% of the book excellently guides us through working with our PowerShots to get excellent photographs. Part II "Creating Great Images..." is an excellent and concise guide to doing better photography in general, but within the PowerShot feature set and limitations. The author starts with the fundamentals - Simplicity, Composition, Sharpness, Light, Exposure - then moves on to special situations - sports, animals, architecture, children/people, fireworks, flowers, landscapes, motion, night, pets, streets, sunsets, travel, and winter - giving good basics, tips, and practice for trying each. You only need this one field guide - it'll help you use your PowerShot to take great photos.

Make your Canon become a POWERshot,
By
This review is from: Canon PowerShot Digital Field Guide (Paperback)
I recently purchased a Canon Powershot SD1200IS. Although this is a great little camera, the accompanying Canon user manual leaves a lot to be desired. The Canon manual tells you what buttons to push to access the various features, but it doesn't tell you where, when, and why you might use many of these features.
This book fills that void admirable. The book covers G, S, TX, A, and SD series cameras in the Canon line. Although written in 2007, it can still be used with Canon cameras introduced later--such as my SD1200IS--without any difficulties. So if you want to do more with your Canon Powershot than just take pictures in automatic mode, get this guide. You'll be taking great pictures even when conditions are not so great.

It's not a bad book and because it didn't cost a lot was worth getting. But it covers too many diverse cameras.
