This review is from: Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001) (Office Product)
This printer is a first rate piece of technology. Everything from its paper handling to its print quality to the software utilities that accompany it are excellent. It has greatly exceeded my expectations and has far outperformed other printers I have owned over the past 15 years.

I have had some prints done by a professional lab for comparison purposes. The Canon is indistinguishable in its quality. Once it is properly set up, you get a very accurate transfer of color and luminence from screen to paper - a feat that has been close to impossible with other printers I have used. The fact that you can accurately edit a picture and predict the appearance of the print so reliably saves you a tremendous amount of time and money.

The print drivers that Canon includes are well documented, but you must take some time to read and understang the process of using them to get the best results. Once you have yours properly set up, you will quickly become addicted to the results.

Its paper handling is especially noteworthy. Heavy stock that requires hand feeding and constant supervision with other printers can be batch loaded and print flawlessly with the Canon. If you value your time and your sanity, you will appreciate what this means.

Worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Printer, December 30, 2006

My new Pixma Pro9000 is astoundingly good. I have used Epson photo printers for about 10 years and was reasonably content with the results, although I was somewhat bothered by the slowness and never able to perfectly match monitor and print despite calibrating with a Pantone ColorVision Spyder2. Now, for the first time my print output is exactly like what I see on screen. The speed of the printer is amazing - a 4x6 on highest quality takes a bit over a minute and less than a minute on standard quality. Larger sizes also print five or six times as fast as my Epson did. The output quality on Canon Photo Paper Pro Super High Gloss is just beautiful - wonderfully deep and rich colors essentially indistinguishable from those on the monitor screen.

The previous poster complained about the included software Easy PhotoPrint, but this application is not meant for sophisticated users. Also supplied with the printer is a plug-in for Photoshop, Easy Photoprint Pro, which allows complete control over the printing process, as does, of course, Photoshop itself. I was surprised to see that the print output when I let the printer driver manage the color handling in Photoshop was equal or superior to that obtained when I used ICC profiles and let Photoshop do the color handling.

This is just a quick review, as most has already been said about this printer. I have used it for about a month now, and I am still stunned by the quality of print that comes from this machine. I have had many printers over the years, and still have a few A4 printers. I use my printers for both personal, and professional print work. This printer is very fast when printing in color. Considering the range of colors, and the accuracy it delivers time after time, I find it hard to believe that a printer at this price can spit out a full 13x19 lab quality print in about 1 min, 20 sec. It will print a similar 8x10 in about 30 sec. Wow.... The color is stunning, and better than a commercial lab, as you can tune your print to exactly produce the result you want, and deliver the finished product within minutes. It's an entirely new level of home/studio photo printing. Pigment based printing has become the rage lately, as it has great colorfastness over time. Canon offers a pigment based printer in this class as well, but it does have a serious cost penalty. The truth is, the new dye based inks used in the 9000 are solid for over 100 years in storage, and over 30 years on display. That beats old fashioned "chrome" prints to near death. The new dyes also offer beautiful "visual impact" that many pigment printers still lack. Dark shadow areas remain clean as well, and do not suffer from "brassing" where pigment piles up, and changes the sheen of the paper surface. It's the bargain of the century that delivers awesome images on a wide variety of paper types. The driver/sofware suite is very well done, and offers many choices. You don't have to work around it. You simply work with it, and get a big smile every time. The downside is that if you print lots of large B&W prints, there are better choices out there. The 9000 does a splendid job of printing B&W, but it takes a LONG time to print a 13x19 image. I'm talking about 16 minutes..... Monochrome isn't so bad in time, and delivers very nice images, but if you are looking for true B&W prints that will stun viewers, you have to be patient when printing them. That's OK for me, as I only print fine quality B&W every now and then. The speed of full color printing on the 9000 is more important to me overall. There it is. The 9000 is a great printing tool, at an affordable price point.

This will be very short, however I felt compelled to write something just because of how happy I am with this printer. We have an HP also which does the job pretty good with the occational paper jam. I got this one because the reviews on the new HP 13x19 printers are scattered but the reviews for Canon seem to be solid and I would have to agree 100% for good reason. We print about 5000 sheets a month in all sizes and the Canon Pro9000 handles it effortlessly with the best color I have seen around. Our ink replacement bill is also not as high as the HP we use as well which makes for an excellent printer. I don't have details but just wanted to voice my 2 cents in case you are on the fence as which 13x19 printer to buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon Pixma Pro9000 Printer, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001) (Office Product)
I was waiting with anticipation for the arrival of this printer, and can say to all readers that it was worth every second. We have a small studio doing portraits and nature photography, and it has been in use in our studio for about one month with great results. This printer produces professional quality prints without effort. The operation is smooth and competent. We have fed all types of papers through it from Canon, Kodak, Ilford, HP and Staples. The output is seamless and consistent, and the 13 x 19 prints are breathtaking. I am not a nuts and bolts type of person, so I cannot speak to the specifications. I am results-oriented and have an eye for what is acceptable or outstanding. I can state that I am very pleased with this product.

Got this last week and it's tremendous! I'm printing on Canon Pro and Plus papers, as well as Ilford gallerie papers. They're all breathtaking. My friends and family think they're professionally printed. I'm really happy with it. Had a Canon pixma i6600. Not even in the same category. I'm so glad I upgraded. Will print up to 13x19. It's fast too! But it is gigantic!!! I absolutely highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good printer but very large, February 20, 2007
This review is from: Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001) (Office Product)
I have had this printer for 2 months since excellent delivery by Amazon. It makes great prints, but to my eye the prints are not any better than the i9900 printers I also have. Perhaps the archival quality of the cli-8 ink is better than the bci-6 ink used in the i9900, but definitely not a big difference over the quality of the i9900 prints. Ink is quite a bit more expensive for the pro9000, and the cartridges have a chip to detect if you are trying to refill the cartridge. Chip can be bypassed, but at the loss of low ink warnings, and probable loss of warranty. I use Canon ink in all printers, and source images are from Canon 20D and 5D.

4.0 out of 5 stars An incredible printer missing a few key features, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001) (Office Product)
To begin, this is truly a professional grade printer which I have used for just over a year. I produce prints of my artwork sometimes at the rate of three or four hundred 8x10's a week, and at other times it sits idle for a week or two at a time. The color quality with genuine canon inks is incredible - in my experience requiring little to no calibration with a properly set up, quality monitor. While printing, it's quick and quiet, even without its special Quiet Mode enabled, and I have actually turned down its printing speed at times, to allow for more drying time between prints. I do try to run at least a few prints a week, but even when it was left alone for nearly three weeks, there was no issue with the print head clogging. This may not be a good printer for someone who intends to use it only a few times a year, as it does use large amounts of ink in its cleaning cycles. If you, however, need to print very high quality, medium-large format pictures (whether photos or art) at reasonably high volume, this printer is definitely a good choice.

Now for the bad - what seems to be lacking more than the printer itself is the software it comes with - most irritating is its lack of support for 11x14" paper, a standard print and photo size readily available on my previous printer, an Epson Stylus Photo 1280. Its batch printing program, Easy-PhotoPrint, also limits paper type selection based on paper size - perhaps useful if printing only with Canon's paper, but in my experience it handles other brands just as well. The CD/DVD printing option available on European models would have been nice to have as well, though so far I've had no call for it. Points that others have brought up about its size are more or less accurate - it is a behemoth. Instead of sitting next to my computer, it has the top of a shelving unit all to itself, and will overwhelm most desktop space. It also requires space behind and in front for those big 13x19" prints you'll be producing.

All in all, the good points of this printer far outweigh the bad, but for a very select number of people. If you're printing only letter sized, there are other printers in Canon's line that do the job just as well. If you frequently need to print larger than 13x19" (it also has no banner printing feature), you'd be better with an actual large format printer. If you are an independent artist, artist group, or small photography studio, however, I would definitely recommend this printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Printer, June 8, 2007
This review is from: Canon Pixma Pro9000 Professional Large Format Inkjet Printer (9995A001) (Office Product)
This is an amazing printer!

For years, I've gone with HP printers. I wanted a wide format printer, but was not at all impressed with the HP wide format printer that I got a year or so back. I had narrowed my choice down to the Canon Pixma Pro9000 or the Epson Stylus Photo R1800. I really wanted the ability to both print directly on CDs/DVDs and produce professional quality photographs. The Epson R1800 did both. The Canon Pro9000, though, did not have the CD/DVD printing capability. However, I was concerned about the reports of Epson's ink guzzling and print head clogging. I actually bought an Epson inkjet printer some years back and returned it because of the huge ink consumption.

I ultimately decided on the Canon printer, and could not be happier. The prints are incredible. I'd say that they are as good if not better than professional prints. The printer requires eight different ink cartridges, two of which are photo cartridges. I've used up the photo cartridges much faster than the others, but would certainly not describe the printer as ink guzzling.

After I got the printer, I discovered, much to my delight, that the Canon Pro9000 actually has the capability to print on CDs/DVDs. However, that feature is turned off on the US printers, supposedly because of some agreement between Canon and Epson. I was able to locate and purchase the "E" tray that comes with the Canon Pro9000 printers sold in Europe. In addition, I found both instructions on how to convert the US Canon printer to a European Canon printer so that it can print on CDs/DVDs, and software that could be downloaded to accomplish all of this. I can now produce professional looking CDs/DVDs and photographs.

Bottom line, I could not be happier!

I just recently got married and bought this printer to make up some photo albums as gifts to everyone in the wedding. While the pictures print beautifully, the machine broke after only a couple months of very limited use. I called customer service and was informed that the way it was flashing indicated the machine needed to be taken in for a repair or sent back. The problem with sending it back is that you get a "refurbished" one as a replacement. This seems a little ridiculous after buying a brand new one and using it only a few times, especially considering the cost of the machine. So do I send it back and get a used one, or have it fixed and pray the machine is not defective??

I love the printer, but don't plan on buying a Canon again due to the unhelpful warranty.
