The Canon 1EG camera bag provides more than adequate padding to protect equipment place in it under any reasonable situations. However, the manufacturer's rating of capacity for cameras and lenses seems somewhat high to me after trying various loading schemes. This is a solid bag, well designed and assembled. Very flexible interior comparment components. Easy to access external pockets with solid zipper action. Quick release clips for main flap are secure but easy to open and close with one hand. Strap is comfortable and configured in a way that keeps the bag upright when open, even while you wear it. The bottom is rugged - I'm always confident that my gear is well protected. Details like zipper pulls, contoured shoulder pad, and handle grip are not overlooked.

However, I'm not sure what lenses they had in mind when they rated the capacity. I carry a single body, three zoom lenses (with hoods reversed), a flash, a doubler, and a few accessories on the inside. Granted, one of them is a fairly large 70-200 2.8 with tripod ring on. I can't imagine putting much more in unless I was going to pack it for long-term storage.

The outside pockets are very useful and make extra batteries, memory cards (film), filters, and other accessories easy to access without compromising security. There are also two handy removeable zipper pouches that attach to the inside top with velcro.

Plenty of bag for me. For situations where you want to carry a similar set of gear, it could be a great bag for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid amateur gear bag, May 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Canon Professional Gadget Bag 1EG (Electronics)
I received my Canon 1EG bag today, and, after packing my gear into it, I had a few thoughts to share. I think that Canon made a mistake by raising expectation about capacity and purpose of this bag.
First, there is no way to fit "two SLR bodies, seven to ten lenses, flashes, etc, etc" into this bag. Let me tell you what I was able to fit into the bag comfortably (i.e., without squeezing anything and being able to retrieve the gear reasonably fast):
- Canon D10 camera with Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM AF lens,
- Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM AF lens in protective bag,
- Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM AF lens in protective bag and with hood and mounting ring,
- Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM AF lens in protective bag,
- Canon Speedlite 420EX,
- Small Slave flash,
- Polaris Flash meter,
- Quick-release tripod head,
- Small table-top tripod,
- batteries, lens-cleaning stuff, remote switch for the SLR and a few other small items.
There was room left for one (maximum two) medium size lenses, and that was it.
Second, as one of the reviewers had commented, this is not a fast bag - all the loops, and velcros, and zippers won't allow you to use it as a piece of professional gear, but it is great for keeping your photo equipment safe and accessible for casual "weekend-shooting" use.
The bag is well-built and well-padded. The only obvious design flaw (for which I give this bag only 4 stars) that I noticed right away was absence of side loops to support the flap when you are using the handle on top of the bag. It causes the weight of the bag to be distributed on the zipper, which, at some point, may break. My bag, by the way, weighed about 15lb with all the aforementioned equipment. If you want to protect the zipper, you should use mostly the shoulder strap.
Overall, this is a good bag, worth the money. If you consider its price and capacity, this bag is well-suited for a serious amateur photographer.

However, the manufacturer's rating of capacity for cameras and lenses seems somewhat high to me after trying various loading schemes. I found difficulty in finding a "quick grab" way to pack a body w/accessory grip and a 28-80 lens attached. It is fine if you have lots of time to pack/unpack, such as scenic work or weddings, but for a working press shooter a bag with less padding and qucker access for lens changes and "shoot and run" situations would probably be a better choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bag., February 24, 2006

Top of the line materials with top of the line workmanship. Would have been 5 stars if the hooks on the front were easier to work one handed. At first I thought it was going to be too big, but now that I've started to use it I would have to say it is about perfect in size. I carry a Canon 20d with 17-55 and 70-200 lenses all the time. I have plenty of room for spare batteries, flash cards, card readers, a small water bottle, and a couple granola bars for long days in the field.

I received this bag as a gift. I have two camera bodies and several lens and other accessories. The bag holds quite a bit. However it is kind of difficult to carry more than one camera body without compromising room for other accessories. The bag is more than enoough for those serious photographers with one camera and accessories. However, if you have more than one camera it is more difficult to carry other accessories. The bag is tough and durable and not too overwhelming. Overall a great bag for the serious photographer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon's Professional Gadget Bag 1EG, October 27, 2009

I just got this bag and it is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I have a Nikon D40 and a Sigma 150-500, it's pretty much the only lens I use now so I wanted a bag that I could fit the camera in still connected to the lens, and this does it! The interior size of this bag is great for me. I also have a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200 stuck in there. If I stood these lenses up I could probablu fit a ton more. There are a lot of pockets with zippers which I don't even have enough things to fill them with. The handle on top of the bag is great to just pick it up real quick and not mess around. I didn't want a backpack bag because I want to carry it the same time I carry a backpack!!

Overall this product exceeded my expectations and I spent a couple hours looking for the right bag, I couldn't be any happier with my purchase (and I'm a Nikon user!!!)

I really like this bag !!! Have used it for 3 months now and the full closure hooks on the front are very robust metal and I have no worry about breakage or using just them without closing zipper when moving bag around during a shoot. True pro grade weight of nylon denier. Good assortment of well padded interior dividers. Exterior pockets just the right size for chargers, 430 flash, filters, blowers etc. and access with bag closed. Top flap is generous and keeps everything protected. Interior holds 2 gripped 40Ds, 24-70L, 70-200L, 16-35L, 50 1.4, 580 + odds and ends. I think there's an error on Canon's capacity description, but mine is heavy enough with what I pack.

I use this bag for my event shoots with its easy top access. It's not for hiking to catch your favorite nature shot or carry your sports teles. I use a Tamrac Expedition 8 for outdoor shoots with my long lenses, mono or tripod and a good size walk ahead of me.

This bag is surprisingly good quality and value for the money !!!! I still find it hard to believe a bag of this quality can be bought at this price.

(UPDATE AFTER USING THIS BAG FOR 18 MONTHS)
This is a robust bag, a great value for the money and still looks good after heavy use. I use it for all my indoor or around town general shoots and have had no problems lifting the bag with just the metal hooks secured. You can access the exterior pouch compartments without opening the bag and the generous wrap around flap protects everything from weather exposure. It is well thought out for quick access and the right type of space for everything I carry. I continue to use my Tamrac Expedition 8 for packing my big teles, multiple 7D's with grips attached and my computer along for sporting or field events with a good size hike and the need to be self contained but WOW, that configuration is super heavy.

I can fit a canon eos camera body, a 50mm, 24-70, 70-200 and 580exII flash in the bag. The pockets I use for filters and flash cards.
I wish I had just a little more room, but really can't complain. It is a very sturdy bag compared to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good kit bag, January 10, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon Professional Gadget Bag 1EG (Electronics)
I have had this bag for about a year now and it is great for keeping a grab and go kit together. The comments about how many lenses you can really carry in this thing are valid. I carry 28-135mm EF on my 20D most of the time and I lug around a 17-85mm EF-S and a 50mm EF. I figure I have room for two or three small lenses like a macro, tele extender, or macro tube - Or on big lense (I think I can get a 100-400mm in there without much of a problem. I keep my battery charger, filters, cleaning kit etc. in the bag all the time. But if you know what type of shooting you are going to be doing then plan accordingly. If you filled this bag up with glass you would not want to carry it all day anyway.

My only grip are the little metal clips creak a little but a few inches of electrical tape cured this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eval of Canon "Professional gadget bag !EG, July 15, 2008
This review is from: Canon Professional Gadget Bag 1EG (Electronics)
On the positive side, this is a generally well built bag. It protects its' contents. It carries well. It is priced lower than competitive bags. I did removed the tripod straps, because my tripods are too large to be safely attached.

In the end, only time will tell how well this bag is constructed.

Initially and on the negative side, while it advertises the ability to carry 2 bodies and 10-12 lenses, It is nearly full with one body attached to one of three zoom lenses with attached lens shades, one flash unit, one light meter and one Gary Fong light sphere and attachments (plus a few other odds and ends).

Personally, I prefer not to advertise that I'm carrying cameras and lenses, so I wish the Canon symbol were much more subdued or even removed.

I wish a large pocket in the bag could expand (unzip) as necessary like unto my last bag (Targus international Traveler, bought in 1991). I would still be using this bag, but Canon "L" series zoom lenses and sunshades are much more bulky than ATX lenses. I hope that helps.
