I bought a T1i a few weeks ago as my first SLR camera. I shopped a few different "T1i specific" books, and found this one to be the best, by a long shot. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not So Great
This book offers very little help on the T1i camera itself but a good deal of novice camera information like "what is an aperture". If you're already somewhat camera knowledgeable this book won't help you much. It also is loaded with pictures and blank space so offers much less than the page count suggests. (By the way I do love my T1i!)

I bought a T1i a few weeks ago as my first SLR camera. I shopped a few different "T1i specific" books, and found this one to be the best, by a long shot. The others all seemed to be a bit too much of an "expanded manual", in that they taught the reader how to use the camera and all its settings (in a much better way than the included manual), but didn't do a great job of teaching great photography. (example- it will show you how to adjust your ISO, without explaining what ISO is, and when you would want to adjust it).

Other photography books (not specific to any particular model camera) were simply not adequate because if i wasn't learning how to use MY camera, the book wasn't helpful. Jeff Revell's book found the perfect balance between the other books. He teaches the basics (and some advanced techniques), easy to understand for a first time SLR owner, and does it while teaching you how to use YOUR camera (assuming you own the T1i). He also has a ton of great examples in there of great shots he took, and the settings and circumstances that produced those shots. I'll re-read this again soon to perfect some of the tips and techniques.

This author is GREAT! I purchased several books on the canon rebel T1i and this has to be my favorite! Straight to the point and with lots of information. There are even some fun assignments at the end of each chapter. If you are looking to use your camera in a more creative way this book is it!

A very well planned out T1i guide integrating general photography principles and practices. I like the size of the book, particuarly that the pages are slightly wider making it tend to stay open easier. I don't have to hold the corner down with another book or some other heavy weight if I choose to take my hands off the book. The assignments at the end of chapters are a great learning tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Easy to understand, January 19, 2010

I did a lot of research before settling on this book, and I was not disappointed, this is a great book. It is definitely not a repeat of the owner's manual. It is a great guide to digital photography with lots of pictures and explanations. If you do own a Rebel T1i, get this book. My daughter owns a Rebel Xsi and she is finding this book useful also. Isn't it frustrating to own such a super camera and not explore all the settings with "knowledge" gleaned from this book? The crux of the matter is, we can all put our cameras on "auto" and snap away but real satisfaction is, moving from the basic modes to other modes that give you total control and ultimately creating beautiful pictures in the process. This book guides you to this level in simple language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner book/only one issue, March 15, 2011

This review is from: Canon Rebel T1i/500D: From Snapshots to Great Shots (Paperback)
I was looking for a book specific to my camera, the Canon Rebel t1i/500D, that I got from my husband for Christmas.

I had never used an SLR before and had no idea about aperture, iso or anything else related to an SLR. I knew I needed

a book for beginners as the owners manual was difficult for me to read (small print) and comprehend.

After reading the reviews on several of the books "specific" to my camera and for beginners, I finally settled

on this one by Jeff Revell. It is written in a way that I can understand, at the end of each chapter there are assignments to complete.

I now know about the basics and beyond and feel much more confident using my camera.

The only fault I have with this book is that the photo examples he uses in the book are often taken with lens that

didn't come with the camera, I have the 18-55. So after learning a new skill, you really can't go out and try them out unless you have

additionally invested in an array of lens.Over all I have learned a lot from this book and continue to refer to it often.

This book was extremely well written in plain, easy to understand english for anyone to understand. It has helped me alot in learning how to use my new T1i camera. It has improved my photography while giving me a better understanding of many concepts as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars T1i owners should get this instead of David Busch's!, October 25, 2010

This review is from: Canon Rebel T1i/500D: From Snapshots to Great Shots (Paperback)
If you want to learn how to take great pictures using your Canon Rebel T1i, get this book. This book covers everything you need to know about your camera's functions and how to use it to shoot great shots. Revell explains exposure so succinctly that this is the first book that gave me full grasp of the topic. (I've read a few others).

I read someone complain here that there are several full-page pictures in this book and that this does not justify the number of pages this book claims to have. How can a book that is about photography, not include photographs? Any book on photography is incomplete without showing you pictures so you can understand how different exposure settings produce different results. The author does a great job of showing some of his pictures from his own collection as examples. I like this approach because it makes the concepts easier to understand - a picture is worth a thousand words!

What's even better is that this book is written for the owners of Rebel T1i so not only does it show you how to take great shots but also shows you how to exclusively do it with your own camera so you'll know exactly which menu you have to go to change settings.

The only thing that I wish Revell covered more was HDR photography. This book slightly touches it but does not go into more detail.

This book is great! I am truly a photography novice so this book has been extremely helpful. Some of the terms are still confusing me but it is nice to have the book as a handy reference. I bought the T1i so that I could get my kids in picture and this book has taken my pictures to a whole new level. It provides step by stem instructions and an easy read. After a few days and some tips from the book my portraits now rival or exceed some of those taken at the cheap box store studio. Highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't find a better book for the novice photographer, June 15, 2010
This review is from: Canon Rebel T1i/500D: From Snapshots to Great Shots (Paperback)
I went to Barnes and Nobles to look through their available books on the Canon T1i. What I found were 4 books that looked unbelievably detailed and BORING!!!! Then I found this one. Not only is it incredibly informative, it is very easy to follow and understand. It is written in a way that the novice to mid-level photographer can understand and has humor throughout. I feel that I now have a grasp of what I am doing and can go out and have fun with my camera. My biggest complaint is that I paid $24.99 at Barnes and Nobles, much better price at Amazon.
