2.0 out of 5 stars A One Day Shelf Life?
Oh, I was so excited to buy this product, based on all the reviews I read; here on Amazon and elsewhere. So I ordered it. Oh well, I've lost money on other purchases as well.

The unit is very easy to set up, and if you follow the beginner's guide, you can generally produce the prints you want with relative ease.

Once I set the unit up, I was able...

5.0 out of 5 stars Neat Little Photo Printer and Easy to Use, July 10, 2010
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
I received the Selphy ES40 as a birthday gift after several hints. It took a bit of doing to gather everything together to make it work as there was no paper included with the printer. The clerk at Best Buy sold the gift giver the wrong type of photo paper and this was discovered only after the box of paper was opened and BB would not take it back. TAKE NOTE ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN PURCHASING THIS PRINTER: the Canon Easy Photo Pack (E-P100/Ink & Paper)that is needed to use in this printer is available only ON LINE through Amazon or directly from Canon. Plan ahead before you purchase it to make sure you can get the correct photo pack and you will then get carried away once you start printing your pics.
One drawback is that if you plan to print from an xD-picture card, you will need an adapter for this (instructions in the guide state this is "commercially available"), but I have NOT been able to find this adapter anywhere on line or at any photo store I've contacted or visited. This has been my biggest disappointment with this printer as one of my cameras uses this type picture card and I'm not able to print those pictures without the adapter. It seems to me that Canon should include this adapter with the printer.

I got this little printer in hopes of having something more convenient than having to run to the store. I've got three kids and two of them are under the age of two so a quick run to the store to print off pictures isn't ever easy. I turned it on and got it set up and that took about 2 minutes. After that I put in the ink and paper cartridge and that took about 15 seconds. I plugged in my camera and started printing. So in the matter of about 3 minutes after I took it out of the box I had a gorgeous picture. I've had so much fun with this little printer and every single picture has come out absolutely perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best printer EVER!!! But you can get it cheaper..., January 21, 2011
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
I just bought this printer last night and I LOVE it. I printed all 50 pictures in the photo pack with absolutely no problem. No, it doesn't come with the USB cord but I just used the USB cord from my old printer and it was a perfect match. I compared the quality with pictures I had printed from Target and they would equal if not better. I wish it told you how many prints you have left before the ink/paper is gone and maybe it does but I haven't found the option yet. The ink is a little expensive but I think it's so worth it for the convenience. I always have problems at the photolab, from the kiosks being down, to the kiosks not being able to read my memory card or disks, and of course, rude customer service. I took some awesome pictures of my tree and ornaments last year and plan to send them out next Christmas as cards thanks to the postcard on the back of the prints. Anyway, Amazon is selling this for over $200 and I bought it locally at Best Buy for $85.99 and I saw it advertised at Bestbuy.com for only $99. It's only $150 on Canon's site. Hope no one pays over twice the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer!, June 2, 2010
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
I purchased this printer for my girlfriend. She's not a very electronics saavy person and will usually not even bother to attempt learning about new gadgets. She basically plugged this printer in and was printing in less than 2 minutes. Picture quality was good. Printer speed was average/good so no complaints. The paper/ink combo kits are fantastic. You always have the exact amount of ink for the amount of paper in each package so you never run out of one before the other. Very compact and light weight. LCD screen is a great feature. Overall this is a great printer and very worth your time, epecially for such a great price! MUST HAVE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent product!, January 25, 2011
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
I had in the past a Photo size Epson printer but the ink dried out and it stopped working. This will not happen with this dye sublimation printer.

The picture quality is great. Image does not smear and is water proof as soon as it comes out of the printer. This Selphy model contains the power supply as well as the paper so it is always ready to print with minimal hassle.

I am printing from my Windows computer and Picasa and operation is straight forward (make sure to install the printer driver though).

Make sure to get the correct Slephy cartridges for this printer (there are at least two kinds, one is compatible and one is not). I am using E-P100 from Amazon (less than 30c per pic).

Note that when it prints, the paper comes out and then turns by 90deg. This is normal, not a paper jam. Actually it is fun to watch. The paper then goes in and out the printer few times and you see how the images is built using layers of color.

Excelent product overall. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Prints, Interesting Movement, Very Pleased, April 6, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
Having had more than my share of compact ink jet photo printers, I was a little skeptical of the all-in-one cartridge system used by the Selphy ES40. I was also, however, tired of prints never coming out right, paper that was reluctant to feed, near interminable waits, etc.

This printer is the modern day equivalent of a Polaroid camera. You just insert the cartridge (for 50 photos), easily select the photo via the dial (which works very much like Canon cameras (or like an iPod, you can spin it or click each of the four directions)), then press the print button. Out comes the picture with no fuss. It won't smudge and watching each color layer appear in succession is interesting, too.

Take note: the printer comes with NO paper/ink. You must order it separately. And while the lab will certainly be cheaper, it'll also take a lot longer and a trip to the store or waiting for the delivery.

We got this printer to replace what Polaroids used to do... quickly print a picture with no fuss. It does that wonderfully.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Printer for the money Easy to use, November 25, 2010
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
Make sure to order at least one pak of paper/ink with this as it does not come with any in the box.
Ok so you are thinking about buying one of these little gems. I purchased one of these the other day for the Santa Claus gigs I do. I am a professional Santa and this year we have added the ability to get a picture with Santa. I needed something compact with good quality and good speed. After reading about all differnt types of printers I decided to go with this one. This is not the first dye sub printer I have purchased so I knew a bit about them before. Lets start with setting it up, out of the box you plug it in load the paper pak and away you go. Open the side door to load the paper pack which comes as 1 unit paper and dye sub ink all in one piece. It slides right into the printer only 1 way it can go no way to screw this part up. Now either connect a camera directly through the USB Pictbridge connector or you can just pop in your memeory card. If using a memory card the pictures come right up on the screen and you scroll to the one you want and push print. Within 43 seconds from the time you hit the button you have a very nice very sharp picture.(even better than a print form your local picture printing loaction) When printing directly from your camera you tell your Pictbridge enabled camera to print and it prints in the same speed from the camera. Now the only down side with printing directly from the camera is that you have to wait for it to completly print before you can take another picture. For our Santa pics we do not have time to wait so I have interfaced my DSLR camera through a computer to speed up the process. So there is the basics in a nut shell but it does more. You can do some basic editing of your pictures like cropping and so forth. There are preloaded boarders you an choose directly from the printer to add a little zip to your pictures. It even has voice prompts, yes you read that correclty voice prompts. You can also choose to print the picture in a few ways like 2 on one page or many thumbnails like a contact sheet. There is software that comes with it but I have not even used it yet. There are differnt types of paper paks that Canon makes for this some with pre printed boarders like for Christmas, or foil print ones that will do a gold or silver type boarder. The pictures will last for many years they are rated for 100 years before fading also these pictures can be completly submerged in water and will not destroy them. So go give it a go you will not be sorry that you purchased this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spend the Money and get this printer, December 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
Just received this a couple of days ago. Spend the money and purchase this photo printer. I'm sort of a challenged person when it comes to setting up electronic stuff. But this was an easy set-up. The prints are comparable to CVS etc. Plus the creative option on this printer lets you do more things to your prints. This has a nice carry handle so you can take it anywhere that has a hook-up for your power cord. The pics are pricier than at CVS but you have the convenience of printing them almost anywhere.
Also be smart and buy extra picture pks. This does not come with any. I have a regular size all-in-one printer but for photos only this can't be beat.
I have been looking at these for a couple of years now. Our 3rd grandchild is less than a year old and I can immediately print pics right after I take them.
Plus we live in an RV nearly 7 months of the year and I now I won't have to wait to get my pics printed. Plus the size of this is very convenient.
As a few other people have said, all I can say is WOW. This was one of my best purchases in a long time.
I thought I had ordered enough printer pks but now I'm going to order more. I do not want to have to search for more in case I run out as we'll be snow birds heading south in just a few weeks and I want to make sure I have enough pic pks.
I have also ordered a similar Selphy printer for a christmas gift and hope she likes hers as much as I like mine.
Don't put off ordering one of these and I really recommend the Selphy ES40.
To put it simply-it's just the greatest. So glad Cannon designed these.
Thank-You

5.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, for the price!, September 22, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Canon SELPHY ES40 Compact Photo Printer (3647B001) (Office Product)
This little printer is a powerhouse! It prints a photo in about a minute and, I have to say, the print quality is phenomenal! It's the closest thing to film print quality I've seen from a printer.

Setup is a snap. you open a cartridge, open the cartridge door on the side of the printer, take out the cleaning cartridge, remove the orange retaining clip from the back of the new cartridge, insert it into the printer and close the door. Now, you're ready to print. Just put your memory card into the printer, select the photos, cropping, effects or frames you want and press the "print" button. 60 seconds later, you have your print.

My only complaint is that the Photo effects, which are available on the printer, are not included in the software for your computer. Oh yeah, While you can hook up a USB cable to your Selphy and print from your computer, you can also use it completely independent of a computer.

I print a lot of pictures using HP Photo printers. When I received the SELPHY from someone who bought it but never tried it, I wondered how this odd-looking printer would work. It worked so well that I hate to go back to my usual printer when I need larger-sized photos.

It is easy to use, fast, and the results look great. I like the black and white option as well as the small prints.

I've recommended it to my friends.
