The popular Speedlite 580EX Flash has been replaced by the new Speedlite 580EX II Flash, which features a host of improvements, including a metal hot shoe withan improved locking mechanism for added durability, an external metering sensor for non-TTL automatic flash exposure control and a PC socket for use with non-dedicated slave triggers. Fully compatible with all EOS SLRs, the Speedlite 580EX II is gasketed for dust and moisture resistance, making it possible for users of EOS-1 class digital SLRs and many L-series EF lenses to use flash safely when shooting in dusty or wet environments.

This unit is superior to the 430 EX in all of the important ways: more powerful, many more features, built very well, a bit heavier, but worth the extra weight in performance. A must have for the pro and serious amateur. Amazon's price package could not be beat. I use the 430 EX as a slave unit and as a backup.

Of course, the flash is great, but I am giving the kit 1 star because of the batteries and charger.
I gave the kit a shot because it seemed like a cheap way of getting a decent diffuser and some extra nimh batts and a cheapo charger. Well, they are cheap for sure. I don't know if it is the charger or the batteries, but the "system" just doesn't work. I never even tried to troubleshoot. Charged the AA NiMh batteries for four hours, as usual, with a cheap charger and gave them a shot... 3 cycles of the flash and they were done for.
I called Adorama immediately and they refunded the money to me. I didn't even have to send the batteries/charger back.

To sum up: GREAT flash unit, of course, but USELESS batteries/charger system. Save yourself the hassle and get a slightly more expensive charger and some good NiMh batts, and buy the flash independently.

For the flash....well what else can I say, just read any of the other reviews and you will see it is just good. The charger/batteries, so far seems to math the quality of the flash. Takes a couple of hour to recharge from completely empty and the batteries are powerfull enough so the flash can be ready fast. The difusser....is good but a bit tight fit, You'll have to squeze it on the ends a bit to get it to fit....but not a big deal.....so far I have not used since the flash has its own diffuser....you might have if you are still getting too much light .....or maybe put some sort of "color filter" inside the diffuser before fitting it on the flash and change the tone of the flash ligth
