Quality and Easy Sharing Unite

VIXIA HF R40

With the compact, easy-to-use VIXIA HF R40, you'll see and capture the world in a whole new way through a Genuine Canon HD Video Lens with 53x Advanced Zoom. SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization keeps your video smooth and steady throughout the entire zoom length, while improved Dynamic IS helps keep your video sharp and blur-free when you shoot while walking. The Canon 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor combines with the all new, ultra-advanced DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor to let in more light, allowing you to shoot bright and clear video even in dark scenes. Dual Recording allows you to record in AVCHD to the flash drive and MP4 to the SD card simultaneously, creating archival and easy-to-send video at the same time. Record in 1080/60p easy-to-share MP4 format (35 Mbps) and AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps) for incredibly smooth and rich video of even the fastest-moving subjects. Built-in Wi-Fi® that lets you share anytime, anywhere, has been upgraded with Live Streaming, allowing you to view what you're recording remotely on a mobile device using the Canon CameraAccess app – great for monitoring babies, shooting wildlife and much more. Steady Shooting Through a Mega Zoom Range

Genuine Canon HD Video Lens with 53x Advanced Zoom
VIXIA HF R40

You won't miss any of the action when shooting video with the VIXIA HF R40 camcorder. The camcorder's wide-angle area has been expanded to 38.5mm (35mm equivalent), making complex scenes easier to shoot and adding more image to all your footage. Like every Canon camcorder, the VIXIA HF R40 is equipped with a Genuine Canon HD Video Lens. Canon's high definition video lenses use aspherical lens technology to achieve low chromatic aberration with high resolution while maintaining compact dimensions. Super spectra coating technology lowers flare and ghosting. The big news about the VIXIA HF R40 is the camcorder's impressive 53x Advanced Zoom. Long-range shooting allows you to create videos with dynamic variety, and is less likely to disrupt the action you're shooting. It's perfect for formal ceremonies, animals in the wild, candid family videos and more. Advanced Zoom, available in manual mode, has been achieved with more efficient use of the effective imaging area. It takes the camcorder's telephoto power all the way to 1,723mm (35mm equivalent) for extraordinary flexibility in shooting. For more convenient shooting and better creative control over your videos, the camcorder offers continually variable Zoom Speed settings, with 15 levels available.

SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization with Improved Dynamic Image Stabilization
VIXIA HF R40

Canon's sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer corrects camera shake instantly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths is sharp and steady. Now for the VIXIA HF R40, the power of Canon's new DIGIC DV 4 Image Processer has made possible a significantly improved new Dynamic Image Stabilization mode. In addition to providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion, with extra compensation applied at wide-angle focal lengths, the system now stabilizes rotational camera shake. Controlling rotational camera shake – horizontal, vertical and roll axis – ensures smooth, distortion-free video, even when you're walking while shooting.

Exceptionally Lifelike Image Quality

3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor

The VIXIA HF R40 camcorder is equipped with a 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor for true 1920 x 1080 resolution. Canon's advanced, high-resolution HD CMOS Image Sensor features extra sensitivity that delivers beautifully lifelike Full HD Video with natural color, even in low light. On-chip noise reduction brings bright clarity to every frame. Video is rich, clear and amazingly detailed anywhere you view it, even when played back on a large HDTV.

DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor

The VIXIA HF R40 incorporates the latest and most advanced Canon HD Image Processor, the DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor, which is a significant upgrade on several fronts. The DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor captures more light, for brighter, noise-free images even in dark scenes. Dramatically increased processing power lets you record in both AVCHD and easy-to-share MP4 formats simultaneously.

Recording Options Mean You'll Never Miss a Minute of Great Video

Record to Internal Flash Drive or SD Memory Card

The camcorder's internal 8GB flash drive holds up to three hours of crisp, high-definition video safely and securely. With no moving parts, flash memory technology is perfectly able to withstand camcorder jolts or drops. You can also record to a removable SD memory card, making it easy to share your video with friends and family. Conveniently sized and readily available, SD cards give you up to 64GB (24 hours) of recording capacity for a combined capacity of 72GB or 27 hours. For added flexibility, you can even backup your video directly to an external hard drive by using the optional UA-100 USB Adapter.

SDXC Compatibility

In addition to SD memory cards, the VIXIA HF R40 camcorder is compatible with super-high capacity Secure Digital Expanded Capacity (SDXC) cards. The same convenient size as a standard SD card, an SDXC card can hold up to 2048 GB, and provides ultra-fast data transfer. It's an excellent option for family reunions, vacations and any time you know you'll require extra memory.

Capture Moving Subjects Crisp and Clear

MP4 (35 Mbps) or AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps) Recording

The VIXIA HF R40 gives you the highest quality recording, whether you're capturing MP4 or AVCHD files. 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i, and with images captured at a rate of 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is eliminated so even fast moving subjects show up crisply with motion and patterns clearly recorded. This greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation, gives your video everything Full HD has to offer. A new bit rate of 28 Mbps is the highest in the AVCHD standard, and MP4 files are captured at a bit rate of 35 Mbps, so regardless of the format you're shooting or viewing, image quality is as high as can be.

Choose the Recording Format to Fit the Situation

The Right Format for Any Use

Dual Recording and built-in transcoding ensure that no matter how you decide to use the video you've recorded, you'll have the right format available. Using the power of the DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor, the VIXIA HF R40 camcorder can simultaneously record video to internal memory in AVCHD format, and to an SD card in MP4 format^. The widely used MP4 format provides quick, conversion-free playback on tablets and smartphones, and lets you upload videos directly to social networking sites for easy sharing with friends, family and the world. AVCHD is perfect for watching videos on an HDTV or archiving them to Blu-ray discs. The camcorder also has a built-in transcoding function that converts AVCHD files to MP4s, or from MP4 to MP4 across memory media, making them easy to upload to the Web or save to an SD card.

^ Simultaneous recording is not supported when using MP4 (35 Mbps), AVCHD Progressive (28 Mbps), Baby Mode, or Cinema-Look Filters.

Intuitive Control with Capacitive Touch

3.0-inch Capacitive Touch Panel LCD

The VIXIA HF R40 features a new 3.0-inch Capacitive Touch Panel LCD screen, making shooting and other operations easier than ever. Simply open the panel and the power is on. The improved display is clear and vivid, and just as with your smartphone or tablet, a gentle touch activates intuitive functions. Choose a focal point, track moving subjects, control exposure for selected areas, and operate camcorder controls from the screen, all with a simple touch. In addition, the user interface has been updated to make your shooting experience easier and more fun. The Home button is now on the menu screen, and provides quick access to all functions. Clear explanations for key settings pop up when selecting shooting modes and recording formats, so you can be confident in the decisions you make.

The Easiest Way to Capture, Track and Share Your Baby's Development

Baby Mode

The VIXIA HF R40 features the new Baby Mode – a complete solution for capturing, tracking, organizing and sharing every precious moment of your baby's development. A custom control button on the shooting screen activates the mode, and optimal settings for the shooting conditions, including Intelligent IS and more, are automatically selected. Simply pick up the camera and start recording, knowing capture will be of the highest quality. Videos shot in Baby Mode are automatically saved into a dedicated Baby Album so they'll never get lost among your other videos. You can then view the Baby Album chronologically for a seamless way to relive and share your baby's growth with friends and relatives.

When you're shooting in Baby Mode, the camcorder's Pre-Record (Pre REC) function is always on. This places the camcorder in a stand-by "pre-roll" mode, where it continuously records three seconds of video to memory before you even press the record button. When you start recording, the additional video is recorded too, so it's easier than ever to capture the baby's "firsts" and every special moment.

Touch Decoration in Baby Mode includes stamps to mark each video with your baby's current height and weight. And with a single registration of the baby's birth date, the camcorder will automatically calculate the number of days old and stamp videos accordingly, creating an exact diary of developmental milestones for years to come. The camcorder's other Touch Decoration options, including your own drawings, captions, animations and more, are fully available in Baby Mode, and all can easily be appended to previously shot video as well.

More Shooting Time with Every Charge

Higher Capacity Battery

The VIXIA HF R40 is powered by a new, higher capacity battery pack. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery not only lets you shoot longer, but features intelligent technology that accurately indicates remaining battery time down to the minute, for extra insurance that you'll never miss an important shooting opportunity.

Additional Features

Focus Assist

To enhance focusing capability, the VIXIA HF R40 also features Focus Assist. Normally found in professional broadcast-quality cameras, this feature helps in capturing your subject in razor-sharp focus. It works by providing a 2x magnification of your subject, which is automatically cancelled when you start recording.

Open and Shoot

Advanced Quick Start is a new convenience that allows you to start shooting immediately whenever the action starts. Just open the LCD screen and the power is on. Shut down is just as easy: simply close the screen.

Audio Scene Select

Audio Scene Select offers five modes that automatically optimize settings based on the recording situation, making it easy to record realistic, immersive audio in a range of situations.

Connect Directly to External Drives

When it comes to saving your memories, the VIXIA HF R40 offers plenty of flexibility. In addition to traditional file storage methods, you can connect the camcorder directly to an external hard disk drive by using the optional UA-100 USB Adapter. Now when you're on vacation or at other times when you'll be shooting a lot of video, you can back up data directly to an external hard disk, and even play video on a TV through your camcorder. An external hard disk is more economical than multiple SD cards, and connects simply to the camcorder with the optional USB cable.

Cinema-Look Filters

Other cinematic looks can be had through the use of Cinema-Look Filters. This feature offers a choice of seven varied built-in adjustable filters, which give the look of a variety of cinematic styles by compensating for the color, gamma and other aspects of the image's quality. The looks can be previewed in the LCD display while shooting, and also applied post-capture for additional convenience and versatility. Choose from:

Cinema Standard Recreates the warm tones and muted highlights of classic film
Cool Adds a bluish tint for cool, futuristic-looking scenes
Dramatic B&W Creates bold black-and-white video with high contrast and grain
Nostalgic Recreates the look of old ‘70s TV programs
Old Movies Gives video the aged look of old cinema
Sepia Applies a sepia tint for an antique, faded look
Vivid Accentuates primary colors for a bright, cheerful look

The brightness of each filter can be adjusted low, medium or high, for even greater control. When Cinema Standard is selected, color depth, softening, and contrast can also be adjusted.

Video SnapShot

Video Snapshot allows you to capture the highlights of a once-in-a-lifetime trip or a family milestone with the same ease as taking photos. Simply record a series of short video clips – or select your favorite clips while in Playback Mode – and blend in your favorite background music to create an exciting movie that will grab everyone's attention. Video Snapshot on the VIXIA HF R40 allows selectable recording time (2, 4, or 8 seconds). Additionally, audio from an external source such as an MP3 player can be played along with the Snapshot movie, and playback can be controlled from that source.

Accessories Get the Most from Your Camcorder

Canon helps you get more out of your camcorder with a wide range of accessories that inspire your creativity and productivity alike. The Wireless Microphone WM-V1 streams audio wirelessly from subjects up to 164 feet away. It's perfect for adding your subject's voice at times when you can't get in close to shoot, and can also be used as a stand-alone transceiver to cue shooting and more.

Genuine Canon Face Detection

The same high quality Face Detection technology used in Canon digital cameras is available in Canon high definition camcorders. Up to 35 faces can be tracked automatically, ensuring razor-sharp focus and natural, accurate exposure. Of the faces tracked, 9 detection frames can be displayed at one time.

In fact, the system is so intelligent that it will recognize faces turned downwards or sideways. In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature is convenient in searching for clips that feature the specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display those frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. Your selected face can also be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing your subject.

Smart AUTO and Auto Tele Macro

Smart AUTO lets you capture clear, bright, well-focused video while the camcorder takes care of all the details. The system recognizes 38 shooting situations based on numerous factors, then automatically chooses the optimal settings for the situation. When you shoot a nearby subject in telephoto zoom mode, Auto Tele Macro gives your video the high-end artistic effect of a well-focused subject against a beautifully blurred background.

Ultra Clear Viewing

The display quality of the camcorder's LCD screen has been significantly boosted with new technology. Vivid Clear View is just that: a sharp, bright, beautifully detailed display that helps you create your best videos.

24p Cinema and 30p Progressive Shooting Modes

The VIXIA HF R40 camcorder's sophisticated shooting mode options offer superior creativity and functionality. 24p Cinema Mode gives your video a film-like feel, making it look as if it were shot at the same frame rate as movie film, with a frame capture rate of 24p recorded at 60i. The camcorder also gives you the option of recording in 30p Progressive Mode, which is ideal for clips you intend to post online.

What a great camera for learning and it produces outstanding video.

My first major disappointment is with the low light capability, its very bad in low light situations producing a very grainy picture.

It has auto fouce and manual fouce(but only with some modes), and its menu options is good for me.

I am a community college instructor and I have had problems with students who are absent for illness and those who just "muddle through" lectures. I wanted to be able to film my lectures for review and for those who miss class. I had been using another handheld very small internal storage video cam but I was dissatisfied with that product because the battery life was short and you had to restart the video record every 30 min. and my lectures are 2 hours + at times. Further I needed a recording format that was easy and didn't require me to reformat it to post... The Cannon HRR40 is incredible. The battery life is great (and you can leave it plugged in if you record a long time) and the 64 gig class 10 extreme scandisc supplemental memory card (GET THIS) is wonderful and fast... I have yet to have the lecture exceed the size I could record! AT SD the video is as crisp as any HD I have seen! I don't even need the wonderful HD mode! The touchscreen is a bit small but you rarely need it anyway once you are setup and I can carry it easily in my briefcase or even pocket as it is only about 6 inches by 3 by 3 in size... it is light and the quality is awesome... THIS IS A GREAT BUY!

Just wanted to write a quick review for those with Apples/Mac computers.

This records in MP4 to the SD card, so all you need to do, especially if you have a macbook pro, is put the SD card into your MBP slot and you can just drag the files to your computer. You can open it up in quicktime or you can use it for pretty much any video editing program or if you recorded it the way you want exactly, you can upload the mp4 files straight to youtube/fb, etc.

NEGATIVE
You can be recording in the highest quality MP4 format (35mbps), but if you are recording in lower light situation, the quality is just like a SD, standard definition quality. But, if you record it outside in sunny conditions, it'll show up pretty good.

Also, the AVCHD can be used in finalcutX and imovie. However, if you record in AVCHD format, you can't just create folders on your computer and save the files (like you would with the mp4 files), but you would have to open one of the video editing programs and import them all and make sure it's saved. What I like to do is, once the SD card is full, I would make a folder on my computer or external Hard drive and name it, "Day1" and then dump the files there (MP4 format). Erase the SD card, record more, then make another folder "Day2" and then dump the files there. So that I can use those files later to edit or share, etc. (and also have a backup of everything I recorded).

Just as reference, I do amateur videography and use canon DSLR cameras for photos and videos (t2i and markII) and do everything with Mac computers but I wanted a backup camcorder.

In short, if I were filming ONLY things outside, I'll get this but if I have film indoors, with just average lighting on the subject, I'm a bit concerned it's going to come out grainy.

I teach broadcast journalism at a university, but I also teach non-broadcast students the basics of good video to be used on the web and for ad/pr uses. What a great camera for learning and it produces outstanding video. Well, most of the time. Give this camera daylight and the visuals are stunning. Shooting inside without natural light and the images are generally grainy and there is a significant loss of face detail. However, with a $40 lamp, presto magic, the video gets a 7.8 even from the Bulgarian judge. The built in microphone does a decent enough job picking up ambient sound or even an interview if subject is close enough and the interview area is fairly quiet. However, a big plus for a camera in this price range is the exterior microphone jack. A fairly inexpensive microphone with a mini plug can work wonders. Families should consider taking oral histories from the older people in their tribe. The video becomes priceless. My students use the microphone with great success for interviews. It is not broadcast quality audio, but it's audio that is not displeasing to the ear. Like many other cameras in this price range, quick zooms and pans can leave digital tracing. (We shouldn't be using zooms and pans anyway). You can buy a decent camcorder for $150 less than this camera, but you'll get what you pay for. This camera captures truly remarkable images and armed with an exterior microphone, I'm not sure it gets much better. As I mentioned earlier, and the only reason for a 4-star and not a 5-star rating is low light shooting. What can I say? I'm a big fan.

Attached Video is "How to Connect Your Vixia to the WiFi Remote Control." SOME of the video included here was shot with the Vixia HF R40,(some with an iPhone)so the video quality is not a result of the camcorder!
-------------------
2 MONTH UPDATE (excerpt from my comments):
I use this Vixia R40 for my YouTube tutorials and reviews, which are always filmed at my desk with just normal indoor desk lighting. The video quality is great. I film at full 1080p HD and then edit and save it at 1280x720 for YouTube/Vimeo. I know there is another R40 review here by a person who makes cooking videos for YouTube, and who is very unhappy with the quality of the indoor footage. I was surprised to read it because my experience is just the opposite and it's really a shame that review is giving the R40 such a bad rap. If you "see all of my reviews" of that person, you might notice that the person seems pretty much disgusted with almost everything they ever purchased on Amazon.

Another reviewer on this page, or in the comments somewhere, offered suggestion of the best settings for indoor filming. If I ever find my footage grainy, I'll definitely give those suggestion a try. But so far, I've been delighted with the footage I'm getting with all the default settings. Granted I film fairly close up, with the camcorder mounted about 3 feet above my work surface. I film day or night, with no special lighting, in a room with average natural light, I would say.

Regarding audio and microphones: I have tried the Audio Technica Lavalier Microphone, but I usually just use the camcorder's excellent built-in stereo mic. I get the best sound quality when I use my SAMSON GO-MIC
